As we move into more unsettled weather it's time to give this banger of an altocumulolus sunset over Camlough lake Co Armagh N Ireland a spin. The Met Office loved it featuring it on their cloud types carousel gallery and I hope you like it as much as me.

A slightly longer timelapse before I had to swing left to catch the explosion of colour after the sunset. Thursday 15th October 2026 epic frontal system! Note Mammatus type clouds in the mix of the others. An epic sunset to capture thanks again to @irishskiesforecasts for the heads-up!😍

The distinct, pouch-like bulges hanging downward from the base of the cloud layer are the classic hallmark of the mamma supplementary feature.

While they are most famous for hanging underneath massive thunderstorm anvils (cumulonimbus clouds), they can also frequently develop under mid-level clouds like Altocumulus or Altostratus.

Here the sinking cold air is pushing down into the warmer air below, reversing the normal upward-growing process of clouds to create the beautiful, lumpy texture highlighted perfectly by the setting sun.

A peachy sunrise sky in Mayo this morning ahead of a very wet day.

A shout out to @irishskiesforecasts for the forecast yesterday predicting the possibility of such a sky this morning ahead of the rain👌
