Participating in the 2026 Gwangju Biennale Academy International Curator Course, which emerged from Okwui Enwezor’s Global Institute, initiated at the Gwangju Biennale in 2008, has been one of the highlights of my year so far.

Across Gwangju and Seoul, we encountered exhibitions, artists, archives, institutions and histories, while thinking collectively about what it means to curate within and in relation to place, histories and contemporary conditions.

And then there was everything else: so much good food, getting lost, long days, laughter, karaoke nights, trips to Olive Young, conversations that went on forever and all the discoveries in between.

The generosity within the cohort made the two weeks feel less like a programme and more like hanging out with friends. I arrived not knowing anyone and somehow left with a new group of friends I didn’t know I needed.

They say, some experiences stay with you because of what you learned. Others because of the people you met. This one, for me, is both.

Thank you to the Gwangju Biennale Foundation, our Queen @yesmijoo my Chingu @borrattee @nowherejmc and everyone who made this experience possible. ❤️

Two weeks that felt unbelievably joyful and dreamlike have passed, and what remains are dear friends. Every moment we shared was a continuous peer learning, and there wasn’t a single moment when I wasn’t happy and fulfilled in Gwangju. Two weeks in Gwangju that felt both intense and gently expansive. I arrived with some curiosity and questions, and left with even more questions and deeper feelings — about historical narratives, diaspora, and how we stay together.

Grateful for the chance to sit with histories, share questions, walk through the city, and think alongside people from different places and practices. Thank you for the conversations, the bus trips, the meals, and the willingness to stay with uncertainty together.

Thanks to my cohort for bringing so much inspiration and thanks to our queen @yesmijoo @nowherejmc @fake_as_moon_landing @borrattee and the Gwangju Biennale Foundation team who made this possible❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥

Over the past few weeks, I had the opportunity of being part of an incredible cohort of curators for the @gwangjubiennale International Curator Course, coordinated by @yesmijoo. The theme, “You Must Change Your Default,” rightfully echoed this year’s biennale theme, which is “You Must Change Your Life”. Both themes felt like quiet invitations to pause, unlearn, look again, and allow ourselves to be changed.

One question from our first day stayed with me; What does it mean to be a subject of experience? It made me think deeply about my practice, and about the value of not always knowing. As @master_ab reminded us, perhaps it is okay to be an “unserious curator”- to play, doubt, fail, wander, and remain open to what emerges. There is freedom in allowing curiosity to lead.

Gwangju and its people gave me so much; new questions, generous conversations, friendships, laughter, and moments of quiet reflection. I leave with a heart full of gratitude to the Gwangju Biennale, the GBICC team, my fellow participants, and the beautiful cities of Gwangju and Seoul. Kangsanmita🫶🏾!!! by @ist.i___

I’m so grateful to have been a part of the 2026 @gwangjubiennale International Curator Course, spending two weeks in Korea with the sweetest cohort of curator colleagues.

This was my first time back in Korea since I came with my mom and grandma over 20 years ago, so the edition’s theme “You Must Change Your Life” felt pretty apt. I learned so much in the moments between our lectures and field trips - the ajummas hand feeding us at dinner, going to olive young after class, listening to the cicadas in the trees, and singing bohemian rhapsody collectively at karaoke until 4am 😭

Thank you to our fearless leader @yesmijoo and to @nowherejmc @borrattee @fake_as_moon_landing for keeping us alive lol and creating such a safe space for us to make cherished memories 💕 hoping this isn’t goodbye and just see you later <3 taken in Gwangju Biennale - 광주비엔날레 by @ist.i___

Setiap karya lahir dari pertemuan berbagai perspektif. Dalam Lab Inkubasi Keproduseran, kami mengundang produser dan seniman untuk mengembangkan karya secara bersama, melalui dialog, pembacaan ulang, dan proses yang saling menguatkan.

Berkenalan dengan pasangan peserta pertama: Istifadah Nur Rahma sebagai produser dan Dinda Sulisna sebagai seniman mitra. Berangkat dari praktik seni interdisipliner dan koreografi, keduanya akan mengembangkan sebuah gagasan karya yang berpijak pada pengalaman, tubuh, serta pembacaan kritis terhadap konteks sosial yang melingkupinya.

Selama satu bulan ke depan, mereka akan mengikuti rangkaian materi, bengkel kerja, dan pendampingan bersama fasilitator serta narasumber untuk mempertajam strategi keproduseran sekaligus mengembangkan kemungkinan hidup karya yang sedang mereka bangun.

sementara upacara peringatan pancasila digelar, pidato 1 juni dibacakan, pajak masih hangat diberitakan untuk makin mencekik, dan saya teringat porong.

dua sembilan mei kemarin saya datang ke sana untuk pertama kali. melihat lumpur yang selama 20 tahun masih mengalir. 19 desa habis. rumah hilang. makam hilang. alamat hilang. yang tersisa hanya ingatan warga yang berkali-kali dipaksa kalah.

saya-kami– datang tanpa agenda besar. hanya memutar film dan mengadakan workshop melukis karung semen. tetapi dari karung-karung itulah cerita keluar. pelan-pelan. tanpa diminta. warga porong, penyintas tambang dari banyuwangi, cianjur, sumatera utara, sampai papua, saling menyambung kisah tentang tanah yang dirampas, leluhur yang diingat, dan hidup yang terus dipaksa menanggung akibat keserakahan orang lain. kisahnya tumpah di lukisan.

yang membuat saya geram bukan belaka lumpurnya. melainkan kenyataan bahwa setelah dua puluh tahun, mereka, masih bisa duduk tenang di atas bencana yang ditinggalkan. negara memilih lupa. banyak media dan intelektual memilih diam. lalu penderitaan korban pelan-pelan diubah menjadi sesuatu yang katanya harus diterima.

padahal ada yang tidak bisa diterima.

dan, kunjungan ini terlampau berharga. by @ist.i___

a glimpse of singapore 💥

posting this a little late because right after coming home, life immediately went into deadline mode, lol. but since it’s still may, i refuse to let my singapore birthday egg tart moment miss its month — you can see the tart at the end 🥚✨

one thing that stayed with me from #ConnectingContours hosted by @morasum.network : producing—producer,curator, programmer, (you name it)—is never only about making events happen. it is also about sustaining relations, building trust, creating encounters, and keeping artistic ecosystems alive through collective care. maybe “growing” in the arts is not always about becoming bigger, but about expanding sideways — forming more connections, solidarities, and small meaningful movements that quietly continue to spread.

very grateful for all the conversations, warmth, generosity, and unexpected learnings during the program. honestly still carrying the energy with me until now 💐💅🏽 by @ist.i___
