Nearly a year after Michael Montoya II life was took in a Maryvale High School classroom, prosecutors have offered the teen accused of it a plea deal.

Chris Aguilar, now 17, is charged as an adult with first degree murder in the August 2025 stabbing. He has pleaded not guilty. Under Arizona law, defendants between 15 and 17 are prosecuted as adults for certain violent crimes.

At a hearing Wednesday, prosecutors offered to reduce the charge to second degree murder with a sentence of 20 to 25 years. He has not accepted it. The original charge carries a potential life sentence.

Montoya’s family was in the courtroom asking for life. His mother told the court, “We have to live a life sentence since the day he left.”

She has also filed suit against the Phoenix Union High School District, alleging the district cut school resource officers and left the campus unprotected. A weapons detection system had been installed at Maryvale about two weeks before her son was killed.

Michael was 16.

In January they moved the headquarters back to Arizona to save the company by focusing on Arizona. Arizona closes Wednesday.

Salad and Go filed Chapter 11 on Tuesday and all 70 remaining drive-thrus across Arizona and Nevada serve their last customers Wednesday. It started in Gilbert in 2013 with a genuinely good idea, actual fresh food at fast food prices out a window, in a building the size of a shed. For a few years there you could not drive four minutes in the Valley without passing one.

Then the math. 146 stores at the end of 2024. Forty-one closed last September. Every Texas and Oklahoma location shut in January along with a commissary, headquarters packed up and came home, and the whole plan was to double down on the market that started it. That was seven months ago. The company points to consumer demand, past growth strategy and rising costs, and says the July Cyclospora outbreak it was not implicated in rattled the entire industry.

Not joking about this part though. A lot of people are working their last shift Wednesday and nobody has said anything about gift cards or app credits yet, so if you have money sitting in that app, tomorrow is the window.

Order one last time and drop what you got in the comments like a eulogy. Mine was the same thing every single time.

Send us the wildest thing you’ve seen in the Valley.

Phoenix showed up for Staind, and the crowd brought more than just nostalgia.

Staind’s Break The Cycle 25th Anniversary Tour rolled into Talking Stick Resort Amphitheatre on Tuesday night with Seether, Hoobastank and Hinder on the bill, and videos from the show tell the story. Multiple fights broke out in the crowd as the bands played, with people throwing hands while the music kept going.

Then came the moment everyone’s talking about. One concertgoer ripped off his shirt, set it on fire and threw it straight into the crowd.

There’s no word yet on whether anyone was hurt or if anyone was removed or arrested. We’ve reached out for more info and will update if we hear back.

Twenty-five years after Break The Cycle dropped, the Valley proved it still knows how to turn a Staind show into a whole event.

Peak nu metal energy or totally out of line? Were you there? Let us know what you saw, and tag the friend who’d be right in the middle of this.

Arizona Cardinals fans are done waiting, and now they’re saying it on the freeway.

Digital billboards reading “SELL THE TEAM. Funded by Cardinals Fans. #BIDWILLOUT” are now up across the Valley, aimed squarely at owner Michael Bidwill. One sits along Loop 303 near US 60 in Surprise, and another along Loop 202 at Alma School Road in Mesa, with more on the way.

The campaign started as a GoFundMe from Arizona sports influencer Nathan Kropp, better known as Mr. AZ Sports. About 160 fans donated more than $5,500 in under 24 hours, and the total has kept climbing since. Sun Angel Collective co-founder Scott Harkey then matched the first $4,000, turning it into roughly $8,000 in advertising across his 12 digital billboards in the Valley. The fundraiser is now pushing toward $10,000 for traditional billboards, and Mr. AZ says merch with the same message could be next.

Bidwill’s family has owned the Cardinals since the 1930s, and Michael Bidwill has run the team as principal owner since 2019 after years as team president. The frustration has been building: Arizona went 3-14 last season, hasn’t made the playoffs since 2021, hasn’t won a playoff game since the 2015 season and sits at 1-4 this year with nine straight home losses. Wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. was just traded to Houston, and Bidwill was graded at or near the bottom of the league in the NFL Players Association’s latest owner report cards.

Off the field, a former coach and a former executive assistant this week accused Bidwill and the team of discriminatory treatment. The Cardinals said they strongly deny the claims and will prove they have no merit. An online fan petition calling for a sale has also passed 800 signatures.

Whether any of it moves Bidwill is another question. For now, the message is lit up on Valley freeways.

Fair message or too far? Should Bidwill sell? Let us know below, and if you pass one of the boards, send it our way.

Running a red light might save a few seconds, but it can change someone’s life forever. 🚦😳

Phoenix has been ranked among the deadliest cities in the country for red-light-running crashes, while Arizona sees thousands of crashes involving drivers who ignore traffic signals every year.

That’s thousands of accidents that could potentially be avoided if drivers simply waited for the light to turn green.

Have you noticed how often people run red lights in Arizona? 👀

If you’re ever injured in an accident that wasn’t your fault, call @lernerandrowe at 977-1900.

An 18-year-old woman was pulling up to her own home after work when police say her neighbor turned it into a nightmare.

It happened around 1 a.m. on Sept. 24 near 16th Avenue and San Marcos Drive in Apache Junction. Police say a man walked up to her with a gun and forced her to leave with him. She was held against her will for several hours and assaulted multiple times, according to police.

Then she fought back. Police say she resisted and eventually convinced him to let her go.

When he dropped her back off, a neighbor’s surveillance camera caught his car. Detectives ran it through license plate reader technology and tracked it to a home about four houses down from hers.

Police arrested 32-year-old Pedro A. Espinoza Torres. He faces one count of kidnapping, four counts of aggravated assault, two counts of sexual abuse, and one count of first-degree burglary.

“It is something that should never happen and this young lady, it happened to her,” Apache Junction Police Chief Michael Pooley said.

Police say the case isn’t over. Detectives want to hear from anyone who may have had a similar encounter with Torres or knows of related incidents. He’s associated with a gold or yellow 2014 Jeep Wrangler.

If you have information, call Apache Junction police at 480-982-8260.

ASU hockey just made the biggest coaching splash in program history, and it came straight out of the NHL.

Dave Hakstol is the new man behind the Sun Devils bench. The 58-year-old leaves his assistant job with the Colorado Avalanche after the Avs gave ASU permission to talk with him earlier this week.

This resume is no joke. Hakstol spent 11 seasons as head coach at his alma mater, North Dakota, and took them to 7 Frozen Fours. In 2015 the Philadelphia Flyers hired him straight off a college bench, making him the first coach since 1982 to go directly from the NCAA to an NHL head job. He ran the Flyers for four seasons, then coached the expansion Seattle Kraken in their very first season and stayed three years, finishing with a 241-213-69 record as an NHL head coach.

He also knows the league ASU plays in. His final two North Dakota seasons came in the NCHC, the same conference the Sun Devils are now in for a third season. That lines up with what AD Graham Rossini said he wanted: veteran college hockey experience and deep knowledge of the conference.

There’s a personal tie too. Hakstol’s son plays on an ASU club hockey team.

He takes over at a hard time for the program. Head coach Greg Powers is on paid administrative leave while ASU runs an independent investigation into the collapse of defenseman Matthew Mayich during an outdoor workout on Aug. 20. Mayich’s family says he remains in a coma. Assistant Mike Corbett led the team through its first four games.

Hakstol could be behind the bench as soon as this weekend, when ASU visits UMass Lowell on Friday and Saturday.
