Thanks to @sheisunleashednz for having me join the group. Thankyou Kim for making this a fun and exciting thing to do, producing this great video. They say…. Say yes to everything…. & sometimes discomfort is essential to grow. It’s great to be a part of a business women’s group with fabulous ladies that support each other and brainstorm ideas. Thankyou all🌸 taken in Back Studio by @jackibarklie

Surface Tension — Jacki Barklie

Surface Tension situates textile as a site of material inquiry, drawing from the ancient resist-dye tradition of batik while extending it through contemporary processes of disruption and erosion. Wax functions as both barrier and archive — preserving memory within fibre — while successive layers of hand-dyeing, bleaching, and water blasting physically transform the cloth.

Water blasting is employed to distress and weather the surface, generating a patina that suggests environmental exposure and temporal accumulation. Hand-dyeing builds chromatic depth; bleaching extracts pigment, creating passages of luminosity and absence. Through these additive and subtractive methods, the works oscillate between saturation and void, control and unpredictability.

A fragmented poetic structure — described as a “fractured rhythm” — underpins the methodology. Repetition, interruption, and material resistance become integral to the conceptual framework.

Installation draws from Japanese hanging systems, allowing the textiles to remain suspended, permeable, and responsive to light and air. Translucency and negative space activate the surrounding environment, positioning the work not as static object but as spatial encounter.

In this context, Surface Tension bridges tradition and experimentation, proposing textile as both embodied process and atmospheric presence. taken in Back Studio by @jackibarklie

A little studio production… with a difference!

From original artwork to hand-painted cushions, creativity doesn’t stop at the canvas. 🎨

I’m bringing my art into interiors through these unique, artist-designed soft furnishings — an affordable way to introduce colour, texture and personality into your home.

No mass production here. Just original art, painted with love, by hand, made to live with. 🤍

Come and see what’s happening in the studio at Back Studio, Tauranga. Be inspired, view the art and meet the artist!

They say an artist should keep on exploring… take things outside one’s realm…. Whilst I am waiting for my oil painting to dry…..I remember my trip to Vienna, I was blown away by the applied art museum… playing with 3 D can only make things better… a new perspective.

So I made this ugly duckling today… part of my exploration with vessels and resin. I find there is something so endearing about quirky imperfect shapes. 🩷

Why will you almost always find circles in my artworks?

Circles are symbolic to me.

No beginning. No end. Whole. Fulfilled. Soft. Open. Safe. Sometimes closed.

For me, they represent people.

I’m fascinated by the connection between people — how we relate to one another, how we connect to the spaces around us, and the subtle interactions that happen between us.

Some circles face the same way.
Some look in completely different directions.
Some lean into each other, finding comfort and connection.

And somehow, they all belong together.

There are no jagged edges. Just movement, relationship and a kind of quiet symphony.

Perhaps that’s what continues to draw me back to abstraction — the freedom to explore the human psyche, fragility, desire and the beautiful complexity of how we connect.

What symbol keeps appearing in your creative work? I’d love to know the story behind it.

Feeling incredibly grateful to meet and connect with such influential and inspiring people around me. ✨

One of my artworks has been chosen to be part of this editorial in @unomagnz — and what a lovely surprise!

A big thank you to @mcdonald.kathrine for submitting my piece for the advertorial.

And the words really do SPEAK VOLUMES…

“What’s the story with your interior décor? Choosing locally made can help you tell it.” — UNO

How cool is that? 🤍

I love the idea that the art we choose for our spaces can tell a story — where it came from, who made it, and something about who we are.

Not every day is a fine-painting day… 🎨

Some days I need to be practical and bring out the tools. These white-washed pieces are built through many layers — adding, removing, scraping, marking and revealing — allowing texture to emerge and stories to unfold.

You’ll notice that many of my works feature circles and rounded shapes. They’re symbolic to me… but I’ll tell you the significance of those another day. 😉

I’d love to know — do you have a recurring symbol in your own work? And what’s the story behind it?
