The second-to-last photo is from about 14 years ago.

I was about 20. My mom had just passed, I had lost almost 60 pounds, and I was completely lost. I answered a random Craigslist ad for my first real kitchen job outside of LaRosa’s, having no idea it would change the trajectory of my life.

Renee was my first chef and the first woman who made me want to become one. I didn’t know what a lentil was. I barely knew how to hold a knife. But every time she stepped into that kitchen, I soaked up everything I could. She was fierce, creative, and her flavors blew my mind.

More importantly, she taught me that food could carry people with it. She held her elders close and honored them through the food and businesses she created. Her grandmother’s fork became a symbol of that care throughout her space. Years later, I would tattoo that same fork on my arm.

I didn’t realize then how much of Renee I would carry into the chef I became.

Today, my own work is rooted in the women who came before me; their recipes, stories, traditions and the feeling of food that tastes like home. Cook Like a Mother grew from my belief that those things deserve to be remembered, celebrated and passed forward. Now I get to teach young cooks who walk into my kitchens.

There’s something beautiful about that full circle.

Renee found me during one of the most lost versions of myself and gave me somewhere to put all that grief and curiosity.

She gave me purpose. She lit a fire under me that still hasn’t gone out. Every woman chef has a woman who showed her what was possible.

The longer I spend in this industry, the more I realize we’re all carrying pieces of the people who helped shape us.

Lessons, laughter, hard truths, and support through every season.

I’m lucky enough to be surrounded by some truly incredible humans. The best things I’ve built were never built alone.

Last week marked our most successful week in business to date, and I’m still taking it all in. The long days, late nights, and endless prep lists are worth it when I step back and see what we’re building. Every event, every client, and every opportunity reminds me why I started. Behind every course at A Grateful Plate was a chef who brought their own story, creativity, and heart to the table.

We’re incredibly grateful to Shelbi Nation, Marni Slack, Skyler Hill, Salimah Abdul-Hakim, Jessica Baston, and Kayla Robison for sharing their talents and creating a dining experience that was about so much more than incredible food.

A Grateful Plate was an unforgettable evening built around community, collaboration, and the belief that gathering around a table can create something bigger than any one of us.

Thank you for the hours of planning, prepping, creating, plating, pivoting, and pouring yourselves into every detail. A Grateful Plate would not have been A Grateful Plate without you.

@chef_works always has me ready in style and purpose for smashburger days. This heavy bib apron works to protect me from the heat of the grill, allowing me to keep pumping out orders fast! 126 burgers in 2 hours fast!

Thank you to everyone who came out and smashed! Every burger you eat funds two meals to someone in need. It's incredible that we almost sell out every time! Today we fed 126 of you which means 252 meals can be provided to @soulgoodscincinnati mission to help our feed insecure community. THANK YOU!
