He said no IPAs. Ever.

Then he said "fine, but only if we build it like the West Coast IPA style originally was."

BALLAST POINT BREWING | Anaheim, CA

From its beginnings in San Diego to the heart of Downtown Disney, Ballast Point Brewing has built a reputation around craft beer, creativity and a distinctly Southern California identity.

Opening on January 16, 2019, Ballast Point’s Anaheim location became the first brewery in the Downtown Disney District at the Disneyland Resort. The two-story brewery and restaurant features an on-site brewing system, a spacious rooftop patio overlooking Downtown Disney, and a menu pairing Southern California-inspired food with Ballast Point’s signature beers.

For this dinerlight piece, I wanted to emphasize the building’s distinctive architecture, with its tall vertical entrance, illuminated signage and outdoor patio overlooking the pedestrian walkway.

I reinterpreted the scene at the transition between sunset and night, using deep coastal blues, warm golden light and subtle coral tones along the horizon. The silhouettes of visitors moving through the plaza add a sense of activity while keeping the brewery itself as the centerpiece.

Another Southern California destination, seen in a different light.

BALLAST POINT BREWING | Long Beach, CA

Ballast Point’s story started well before it reached the water in Long Beach.

The brewery grew out of San Diego’s Home Brew Mart, which opened in 1992 as a homebrewing supply shop. In 1996, the first Ballast Point beer was brewed there, beginning a brewery that would become known for experimentation and beers like Sculpin IPA, first brewed in 2005.

In 2016, Ballast Point opened its Long Beach location at Alamitos Bay Landing, 110 N. Marina Drive. The two-story tasting room and restaurant sits along the waterfront with outdoor patios overlooking the water, making the boats and sunsets of Alamitos Bay part of the experience.

The nautical setting also fits a brand that has carried maritime imagery throughout its identity. Ballast Point’s sextant logo comes from a navigational instrument historically used by sailors to determine their position, while fish and other nautical imagery have long been part of its beer labels.

For this dinerlight piece, I wanted to reinterpret the Long Beach location around its waterfront setting. The brewery sits along the harbor beneath layered blues, teals and the orange glow of the horizon, while boats, water skiers and a jet ski bring movement across the foreground. The building and Ballast Point sign remain the anchor of the scene while the marina becomes part of the composition.
