first draft of this piece! ✨

it’s been a difficult few months—lots of stress, lots of illness. this was my first bit of practice after a month of recovering, and though there are many shifts and connections to keep working on, my heart is content to just be able to sing at all.

“Estrellita” - Manuel Ponce

“Estrellita del lejano cielo, que miras mi dolor, que sabes mi sufrir | Baja y dime si me quiere un poco, porque yo no puedo sin su amor vivir.”

“Little star of the distant sky, you see my pain, you know my anguish | Come down and tell me if he loves me a little, because I cannot live without his love”

✨✨✨

One of my favorite songs, though it’s probably been a decade since I’ve sung it. In the past, this one has been borderline impossible for me to sing. In both an emotional and technical sense, I always found it hard to navigate the melancholy of it all, thinking of loved ones who are so very far away now. You can definitely hear the voice flicker at times here, but the Jennie of days past would genuinely be so happy to know that she managed this.

Full disclaimer, I didn’t record this with the intention of posting - if you’ve followed me long enough, you might know I get a ton of anxiety when making audition videos, so this was just an exercise to get back into the swing of things - but it just felt kind of right to share today.

I feel like when we lose people, the love we had for them suddenly feels aimless, like we don’t know what to do with it. Like there was so much more to give that we no longer can hand off and it feels like, ‘well, now what do I do?” And even though the pain of loss doesn’t subside, time has given me a greater sense of stillness: I don’t feel like I’m wandering so much anymore. I carry that love and grace and let it both guide and inspire me, and I try my best to pass it on to others in turn. Thank you to all of those who helped shape me. I like to think that flowers are blooming in your wake. Hechas con amor.

As the veil thins, I hope that you, too, are feeling the presence of those crossing the marigold bridge to visit. 🌸❤️

✨ 100 CLASSES! ✨

I used to be sooo convinced that I wasn’t cut out for anything remotely athletic, mostly because I always felt so lost and overwhelmed in the gym - but @purebarrenorthhollywood helped me realize that no, I actually really love the hard work and and the rush of pride I feel at the end of each class!

100 classes in and I can’t explain how good it is to feel my growth - my knees are stronger (an insane thing to say after 30), my push up is a little deeper, my posture has improved, and I’m regaining flexibility that I completely abandoned after an injury over 15 years ago. I have more energy in my every day life, I’m infinitely more aware of my core when I’m singing…. the list goes on. Truly my only regret is that I didn’t find @pure_barre years ago.

I’m so grateful to the AMAZING instructors for providing me with the guidance my fitness routine needed and for always being so wonderful and encouraging, and to the community as a whole for being so kind and supportive. On to the next milestone!

I sometimes struggle with a lot of negative noise in my head. “You’ll never achieve that goal,” my brain says. “You’re wasting your time.” And in the moments where that noise is so loud and aggressive, it’s often my parents’ voices insisting the opposite that helps ground me.

Even though he’s been gone for a while now, I can still clearly hear the way my dad would say: “I know you can do it. Of course you can.” It didn’t really matter what I was stressing about - he always gave the same sort of response, always so matter of fact. It took me a long time to really understand how much faith he had in me and my abilities and work ethic. And even though he’s not here to express those thoughts anymore, those conversations are a well that I draw from all the time.

On a day as heavy as today, singing is tough. I considered skipping my practice session entirely because it just felt so hard. But hard does not mean impossible, so I kept at it - because ‘of course I can’. I ended up finding such joy in the work, and I was so relieved that I stayed. Thanks for helpin’ me out even now, pa.

Love you, miss you.

So looking forward to “Carmen” tomorrow!! Here’s a little sneaky look from our orchestra rehearsal earlier this week - even while working through the last bits of a painful stomach bug (womp womp) it will always be the greatest joy and the biggest privilege to sing with an orchestra. ❤️

I’m closing this year out with a lot more hope than I’ve felt in a while.

2025 brought several chapters of my life to a close, and in the aftermath of grief and trauma, I realized that I was still stuck in miserable rigidity. I was constantly falling short of my musical expectations, treating myself unkindly, even debating whether or not I had any right to call myself a singer anymore. On the day I made my Commercial Demo, I left the booth feeling like it was some of the most fun I’d had in my entire life. But realizing that it had been more fun than any singing I’d done in the last 7 years hurt; for once, I didn’t feel like I was tightrope walking, waiting to see how long it would take me to fall. It felt like…finally, someone just wanted to hear my voice for what it is. And then I realized that so much of that pressure was mostly self-imposed.

Operatic repertoire is magical. I love being another instrument in the orchestra, using my body in a way that feels so powerful. But I felt less worthy of it. As I ‘fell behind’ in my journey, I panicked more, tried to tighten my control on my art and my technique to make up for lost time and struggled harder. (Control is only an illusion, anyway.)

So I end the year reminding myself that if my path does not take me to the places I may have hoped to go, that there is still so much joy to be found as long as I move authentically, and with love.

In 2026, I will get to sing some of my favorite music with orchestra. I will get to sing characters that are near and dear to my heart. I will get to play video games where my voice is the one guiding the player along. I spent so long feeling as though embracing my versatility meant losing focus - but as I push through the fog, I realize it’s something I want to celebrate: myself, my voice, my artistry. The art of connection.

To all of you who support me, love me, teach me - thank you. I’m so grateful. And thank you to Star for this INSANELY ADORABLE ART??? Oh my LORDDD.

Anyway. Do what makes you happy with your one, precious life.

Happy New Year!
