I've had the honor of speaking about my professional journey to students at every level of education. And the best part of each one is the instant impact.

Yesterday, my industry colleague and friend Goldie Harris invited me to speak at her music business class at Hofstra University. Goldie interviewed me for her "Decoded" speaker series with insightful questions. Thank you for having me. You're also paving the way for the next generation of game changers.

Yet the highlight of the session came at the end. A Latino student waited in line to tell me, "I have no questions for you. I just want to say thank you for everything you've done and continue to do for our culture. Also, it's great to see people who look like me in positions such as yours. I'm also from the boroughs and grew up poor. But now I'm here."

I told him, "And you're on the right path. Keep going."

To any kid, specifically to those who were raised with the same struggles I went through, this is for you. I’m born and bred in the ‘hood (Brooklyn). Just like you. I’m the product of immigrants (Guayaquil, 🇪🇨). Just like you. I started working at 11 (at a kosher butcher shop with my pops). Just like you. They’ve mispronounced my first name. Just like they have yours. Today, I shine. Just like you will. Thank you, hip-hop and reggaeton. I was molded by both and I’m humbled to be recognized as one of reggaeton’s early advocates/storytellers on the U.S. Latinx side. PopSugar did a dope profile on me; great job by @cup_of_johanna, and big ups to the homie, @goldenladyj. Also, @maynanevarez, a longtime collaborator and friend, honored me with one of the best secondary quotes you can give anyone in our field. Photo Credit: By another BK hermano @_ericespino_ 🙏🏽 Shoutout to @tyeshafriday @afinkels and team. LINK IN BIO IS TO DONATE TO HELP OUR GENTE. I wrote about my favorite concept album ever:

"'Disposable Arts' was a concept album, a rare feat in hip-hop. As an MC who made his debut in the late ’80s, his name in the ’90s, and entered the ’00s feeling more like an outsider than a lifelong resident of hip-hop-landia, Ace made an album that felt like a response to the genre’s watered-down commercial success. Yes, there were exceptions, such as JAŸ-Z’s 'The Blueprint' and anything Eminem touched, but the culture was being sold by soda companies, consumed by soccer parents in the suburbs, and used as a prop on TV and in film.

'Disposable Arts' tells the story of a man recently released from prison who gets fed an ad for IDA, a fictional trade school for hip-hop. The curriculum includes all the positions you’d find in the biz: rapper, DJ, A&Rs, label reps, etc., with courses like “Bling Bling-ism.

Yet it’s on “Don’t Understand,” featuring Greg Nice, where you see the complete Ace — the master MC at work. He opens with, “I don’t do white music / I don’t do Black music / I make rap music for hip-hop kids.” And that’s it. Even amid the oversaturated state of hip-hop in the early aughts, Ace knew who his audience was: true hip-hop heads who appreciated all the culture’s elements.

But in creating 'Disposable Arts,' Ace held a mirror up to the community. Some hated what they saw. Others simply didn’t care. But Masta Ace did."

We asked Selena which Latina icon she'd like to dress up as this year. Her answer: @badbunnypr. Although Benito isn't a Latina, he is one of the main Latin artists who has given a space to all of us, regardless of gender or orientation.

For that and so much more, we're happy our daughter is growing up in a world with thoughtful artists who not only create meaningful music but also invite everyone to their table.

Happy Halloween month from 2 Good Bunnies + a Bad Bunny! And Happy Indigenous Peoples Day!

New 'stack up:
"On one occasion, I was on a job with him at one of the apartments. I didn’t want to be there. I wasn’t paying attention. My father’s and the tenant’s voices sounded like Charlie Brown’s teacher. My dad was mounted on a ladder fixing a light. Then all of a sudden he threw a hammer at my chest. I lost my breath!

He quickly came down. He was furious. He had told me, “Watch out for this hammer, Jr.,” but I wasn’t paying attention because I didn’t want to be there. Guess what? My father didn’t want to be there either. He had to be.

At the end of the job, he told me, “What happened today, I don’t ever want to happen again. Also, I want you to do this with me right now, so you don’t have to do it at my age. I want you to use the brain God gave you. Be better than the mule of your father.”

....

"According to various news outlets yesterday, ICE agents shot Oscar Belgal, an undocumented Dominican immigrant, in front of his 5-year-old. It was wrongful, and I can’t help but think of my father: another immigrant who worked with his hands, buried what he felt, and did what he had to do in front of his son. Belgal may have prior charges and arrests, but remember: perfect people are deceptions. A flawed man is still a father, and still human."

True story: I didn't fully appreciate Héctor Lavoe until college. Before then he was just part of the array of music my parents played on the "limpiar la casa" weekends. Once I immersed myself in Lavoe and the rest of Fania, I lost myself in a world of culture. Today, on what would've been his 80th birthday, I wrote about his impact:

"Héctor Lavoe and Willie Colón were a ’70s Bad Bunny and Tainy. Their subsequent albums — Cosa Nuestra, La Gran Fuga, the holiday classics Asalto Navideño: Vol. 1 & 2, and more — defined the early stages of salsa, a genre fusing Cuban son, guaracha, mambo, bomba, plena, and jazz. Lavoe was the perfect face of it: a self-described jíbaro (common folk) who migrated to NYC and ran with Nuyoricans and other Latinos scrapping for the American dream. His voice was nasal, his range infinite, his steez de la calle, and his performances elite improvisations.

"Aguanile," another iconic tune, is more chant than song. It opens with tropical birds chirping and rises into devotion to Yemayá, an Orisha. Artists like Desi Arnaz and Celia Cruz had paid homage to Santería — the religion rooted in the African traditions of the Yoruba people — before, but Lavoe went deep. You could hear the stress and the llanto as he sang to the gods, asking for guidance and protection. Santería runs through Latino and African culture like blood. It's a respected tradition. Lavoe put it on wax.

On "Todo Tiene Su Final," Lavoe sings: "Todo tiene su final, nada dura para siempre, tenemos que recordar que no existe eternidad" (Everything has its end, nothing lasts forever, we must remember that eternity does not exist).

He was wrong. La Voz will live on after eternity."

It's been three months since the @nyknicks won the @nba championship, but The Triviños are still living in Orange and Blue skies. We joined 10,000 fellow New Yorkers for the @theroommatesshow Block Party and showered our heroes with love. It may be pouring outside today, but it's still Knicks in 5! Let's run it back!

I wrote about A Tribe Called Quest's 'The Low End Theory,' the album that made me a music fan as a kid. Thank you, Tribe.

"Hip-hop at the time was going through a mainstream transformation, thanks in large part to MC Hammer, N.W.A’s gangstafication and, lest we forget (we’d rather), Vanilla Ice. Tribe was the antithesis of all of it. Pro-Black, positive, fun lyrics over jazz and soul samples. 'Low End' was visionary and trendsetting; an album that went on to influence Pharrell, J. Cole and so many others.

On an almost-flawless album, “Jazz (We’ve Got)” is damn near perfect. Sampling from saxophonist Lucky Thompson and pianist Cedar Walton playing “On Green Dolphin Street” in 1972, it’s a smooth, horn-driven track where Tribe lets loose on sucka MCs, delivering extraordinary braggadocio.

'The Low End Theory' shattered what a rap album was supposed to sound like, and Tribe demolished the box rappers were put in by the mainstream. Simply put, with 'Low End,' Tribe became the Beatles of hip-hop. No one has come close to this day."

Como dijo Pun, “Latins going platinum was destined to come!”

It was a pleasure finally meeting Mero, who’s holding it down for hip-hop heads everywhere, but especially those of us with a little extra sazón, on HOT 97’s Mornings with Mero.

Big salute to the homie J-Rod, too. Proud of you, bro. Moments like this are a reminder of how far we’ve come and how much further we still have to go.

Let’s keep going. We’ve got so much more to do, so many more stories to tell, and so much more culture to put on.

Happy Latino Heritage Month! 🇵🇷🇩🇴🇪🇨🔥
