Telling my kids I ran a half marathon on three hours sleep, three months after tearing my hamstring.
Also telling them “don’t try this at home” 😅

Two months ago I couldn’t even walk, but I was determined to do all I could to make it to the start line.
No expectations at first, then as the weeks passed I felt stronger and set myself a sub 2:15 target.

9km in, my hamstring reminded me today wasn’t that day, so we adapted.

Still proud of a 2:24 (Strava) / 2:26 (factoring in the toilet queue) because I know I’ve barely scratched the surface of my running potential.

Burj2Burj was one of the toughest yet most rewarding experiences.
I’ll be back 🏃🏾‍♂️💯

All it takes is starting.

Nobody’s first run looks good. The only thing separating runners from everyone else is that they went out once, then did it again.

If you don’t know where to begin, the Couch to 5K app is free and does exactly what it says. Nine weeks, three runs a week, with walk breaks built in from day one. Walking isn’t the shortcut, it’s the plan.

As for me, I’ve got two half marathons, my first solo HYROX and my first marathon in London before April. The plan is to run every step. If that plan changes around mile 20, I’m still ahead of the 81% 🤷🏾‍♂️.

And if you’d rather start with company, @offpace.mvmnt runs Tuesdays at 7:15pm from @soilstore, Kite Beach, and Saturdays at 7am from @bageriform, Dubai Design District. Free, all paces welcome, and nobody is checking your splits 🫡

I used to get home at 4am, sometimes later, after a night DJing. I loved the music, the crowds and the work, so for a long time I didn’t question what the late nights, drinking and lack of sleep were doing to me. Let alone the late night eating. If I showed you my Deliveroo order total you’d be shocked!

I was still training. Still getting things done. I thought I was fine. But over time, I was slowly losing parts of myself without really noticing.

Don’t get me wrong, I still DJ and I love doing it. I’ll have the odd drink here and there too. I’m just in my era of balance now, learning to look after the person behind the decks as much as the person on them.

These days, being up at 6am feels less like a sacrifice and more like getting myself back. 🤍

I’ve always enjoyed fitness, but it’s only recently I’ve realised I was putting a ceiling on my own progress.

From my late 20s until very recently, drinking six or seven days a week and DJing until 3am multiple nights was normal. I still trained, so I told myself it balanced out.

It didn’t.

Showing up was never the problem. The hours outside the gym were quietly undoing some of the work I was putting in.

I’m not chasing perfection now. I’m just making sure my habits support the person I keep saying I want to become.

Turns out you can’t out-train a lifestyle that’s working against you.

Anyone else had to learn this the hard way?
