EPISODE 3: ROAD TO MY FIRST SOLO HYROX

An extended HYROX sim with longer runs, heavier weights and 100kg+ to transport between every station.

Exactly the sort of sensible decision you make after signing up for your first solo.

Train hard. Race easy. Allegedly.

All it takes is starting.

Nobody’s first run looks good. The only thing separating runners from everyone else is that they went out once, then did it again.

If you don’t know where to begin, the Couch to 5K app is free and does exactly what it says. Nine weeks, three runs a week, with walk breaks built in from day one. Walking isn’t the shortcut, it’s the plan.

As for me, I’ve got two half marathons, my first solo HYROX and my first marathon in London before April. The plan is to run every step. If that plan changes around mile 20, I’m still ahead of the 81% 🤷🏾‍♂️.

And if you’d rather start with company, @offpace.mvmnt runs Tuesdays at 7:15pm from @soilstore, Kite Beach, and Saturdays at 7am from @bageriform, Dubai Design District. Free, all paces welcome, and nobody is checking your splits 🫡

I’ve always enjoyed fitness, but it’s only recently I’ve realised I was putting a ceiling on my own progress.

From my late 20s until very recently, drinking six or seven days a week and DJing until 3am multiple nights was normal. I still trained, so I told myself it balanced out.

It didn’t.

Showing up was never the problem. The hours outside the gym were quietly undoing some of the work I was putting in.

I’m not chasing perfection now. I’m just making sure my habits support the person I keep saying I want to become.

Turns out you can’t out-train a lifestyle that’s working against you.

Anyone else had to learn this the hard way?

ROAD TO MY FIRST SOLO HYROX | EP. 02

Finally found a situation where throwing my full body weight at the problem was actually the correct answer.

This block isn’t just about doing more. It’s about wasting less energy so there’s still something left for the run afterwards.

One adjustment that could make a big difference in Abu Dhabi.

Somewhere along the way the run stopped being part of the trip and became the reason for it 🤔

Turns out Fitness Street is a dangerous place for someone who can’t walk past a new gym without training in it 😆

Another one ticked off the list. @ludus.phuket.muaythai is new, seriously well equipped and definitely worth checking out if you’re in Phuket.

This session wasn’t about emptying the tank. I’m following a balanced programme, so not every workout needs to be a red-zone day. Upper-body strength, muscular endurance and steady conditioning all have their place.

Week one of the road to my first solo HYROX in Abu Dhabi is underway.
