I’ve always been a Tar Heel, but today I get to become an alumni as I graduate with my master’s degree from @unchussman.

Turns out getting a degree from one of the best journalism schools in the country is a true challenge in the best possible way and I’m incredibly thankful for it all.

I’ve got unending gratitude for all the support from so so many (looking at you @allijacks). This experience has pushed me to get closer to my school, my home and to my community and it’s been a true joy working on my thesis project for NC’s own @superemptync (digital + physical media babee).

Go Heels, y’all. Congrats to all the grads, especially the photog here: 📸 @adolfooalvz taken in Dean E. Smith Center by @jeyhoun

Some views of Kinston, NC in between filming with @chrisjsuggs in his hometown.

It’s been inspiring to see how folks in the city have navigated continual environmental challenges and disinvestment by leaning on each other and the city’s inherent strength. By leveraging the wealth of talent in the arts as well as the creation and renovation of community spaces, Kinston is fueling a comeback that would’ve been inconceivable to imagine a few years ago. Such an incredibly cool city with wonderful people and history. Huge congrats to @cityofkinston for bringing home recognition for all of this as a winner of the 2025 All-America City award. Go visit soon! @kinstonteens @burtonartcollection @eastkinston @allamericacityaward #portra #pentax67 taken in Kinston, North Carolina by @jeyhoun

Saxapahaw, NC isn’t known for being a hip-hop hotbed, and @tre.charlz isn’t really a hip-hop artist, at least not in the strict conventional sense. But both featured on the site/newsletter yesterday, because genre rigidity is overrated (and because like Cartman, we do what we want). Whatever you call it, Charles’s evocative, emotionally arresting music — pulling together influences from hip-hop, alt-R&B, 90’s rock and more — has been steadily picking up steam ever since the release of his first EP, Currently., just two years ago. With a fresh followup project out now and a healthy slate of live shows ahead for the summer, @jeyhoun caught up with him right before he took the stage at ‘Saturdays in Saxapahaw’ for a new portraiture series we’re calling “Pre-Show.” Scroll to see Jey’s Kodak Portra shots here, and read Tre’s pre-show thoughts at the link in bio. 🎸 by @jeyhoun

“I’ve been looking for new planets for a while now and it felt like we weren’t finding anything,” says @madyson_barber, a @uncchapelhill graduate student who just discovered the youngest transiting planet ever.

Barber, a 2022 graduate, is a lead author on the recently released Nature Magazine paper “A Giant Planet Transiting a 3Myr Protostar With a Misaligned Disk.”

“This was one of the first planets that popped out of our pipeline. It still feels really weird. Weird is the best word I have for it.”
