Jhol can mean a simple curry. In Mumbai slang, it means mischief. Both feel right for a place that pours passion fruit water into pani puri and puts truffle on anda ghotala.

Swipe for everything I ate & save this for your next Bangkok trip 📌

As an Indian living in Bangkok, it is my prerogative to tell you which Indian restaurants are actually worth a visit — even if you are coming from India. And @jholbkk should be on your list.

As I ate my way through totally banging dishes, what I really appreciated was how much they stayed true to the original recipes and flavours, rather than deconstructing them too much. Jhol is an institution, with cuisine spanning nine coastal Indian states. I think it absolutely deserves all the praise I have heard about it.

I started with a THREE EYES IN THE DUSK, a gin based cocktail which was really good, followed by RAW GREEN MANGO WITH SALT & CHILLI as a palate cleanser. This immediately felt familiar to me, growing up in Calcutta. There were little bites with POMELO & PACHADI, and a CALCUTTA-STYLE BEETROOT CUTLET. Olivier had the tasting menu, while I moved between the tasting menu and à la carte.

Of course, I had PANI PURI. It is probably my favourite street food — I love that tanginess and the sudden hit of spicy water. But what really stood out for me was their CUTTACK-STYLE DAHI ALU BARA. I was in Orissa last May for a shoot, and a cyclone delayed the shoot, so I ended up spending a week there. I fell in love with the dish. The multiple layers of texture, all brought together with buttermilk, brought back that memory instantly.

I would go back just for this, and their MASALA BUN WITH PAV BHAJI & CURRY-LEAF BUTTER. The MALABAR PARATHA was so flaky, the MATTA RICE reminded me of Alleppey, and the MANGO CURRY was so comforting. The STICKY TOFFEE CARAMEL WITH NOLEN GUR and TENDER COCONUT PAYASAM were a perfect end to the meal.

For me, that is what makes a restaurant memorable — this meal took me from the coast of Odisha to Alleppey and straight back to growing up in Calcutta. And yes, I still think Calcutta has the best food in India.

Bhima I Pickled Apricot I Homemade Falernum, Passion Fruit, Ginger Beer

At Jhol, we have long held our non-alcoholic creations in the highest regard—our Sacred Juices.
Bhima, our newest expression, begins with a luminous base of pickled apricot juice, its gentle sweetness tempered by a spicy, house-made falernum syrup. Bright passion fruit lends a vivid tartness, while a final pour of ginger beer delivers a clean, punchy lift.

Growing up, my impression of Indian food was probably just curry and roti. After all, for many Taiwanese people, Indian cuisine isn’t something we grow up eating or are very familiar with.

But the first time I tried @jholbkk in Thailand, I was genuinely shocked — in the best way possible. What surprised me most was how completely it changed my perception of Indian food.

I realized that Indian cuisine could be incredibly delicate, layered, and diverse. Different regions, coastlines, ingredients, and spices can create completely different personalities on the plate. JHOL was actually the restaurant that made me fall in love with Indian food and start looking forward to every new menu they create.

Even now, I wouldn’t say I fully understand all the culture and stories behind Indian cuisine, but I can definitely feel how seriously they take their food.

For anyone who is especially concerned about cleanliness, hygiene, and ingredient handling, JHOL pays an incredible amount of attention to those details. From the restaurant environment and kitchen standards to the way every dish is prepared and presented, you can really feel their commitment to quality.

Being recognized by the Michelin Guide is also something that definitely doesn’t happen easily.

Bangkok is one of those cities where you can find incredible food from all over the world, and the competition is intense. Yet JHOL continues to stay true to its own identity, its ingredients, its flavors, and its interpretation of coastal Indian cuisine.

So for me, JHOL is more than just one of my favorite Indian restaurants in Bangkok. It’s also the place that completely changed the way I see Indian food.

Sometimes, you don’t fall in love with a cuisine because you already understand it. Sometimes, it’s because one restaurant is able to guide you, dish by dish, into a world you never really knew before.

JHOL Coastal Indian Cuisine

.

Moh Maya I मोह माया
Pistola Anejo, Campari, Kokum, Grapefruit

Moh Maya in hindi translates to a grand, breathtaking theater of the soul, where the temporary masquerades as the eternal. It is the invisible thread that ties our divine spirit to the dust of the earth, woven from the sweetest longings and the sharpest griefs.

Our signature Alleppey Mango Fish Curry at Jhol is a vibrant tribute to India’s magnificent coastal culinary heritage. Cooked in a luscious, velvety coconut milk base, this dish strikes the perfect harmony between the sharp, fruity tang of raw mangoes and the gentle warmth of traditional spices. We serve it the authentic way—alongside perfectly seasoned, comforting kappa (mashed tapioca)—to soak up every last drop of that aromatic gravy as well as some matta rice.Coastal Indian food is a vast, beautiful spectrum. From the fiery curries of Konkan to the soul-warming flavors of Malabar, the coast teaches us how simple, fresh ingredients can create complex masterpieces.
