[SWIPE ▶️] @jholbkk is one of Bangkok’s more distinctive modern Indian restaurants. Rather than centring the menu on familiar North Indian staples like butter chicken and naan, JHOL explores India’s coastal cuisines, particularly southern and western regions.

We began with three Preludes:
🦀 Calicut Pepper Crab — sweet crab with creamy coconut pachadi and refreshing pomelo.
🥖 Goan Choris Pav — savoury Goan sausage in soft pav with kaffir lime cream and pork floss.
🥚 Kolkata Dim’er Devil — a playful Bengali-inspired bite with quail egg and punchy kasundi mustard.

🦪 Fine de Claire Oyster followed, paired with raw mango thecha and icy pomegranate granita for a briny, tangy, and refreshing combination.

🍗 BFC – Berhampur Fried Chicken was crispy, juicy comfort food paired with JHOL’s hot sauce.

🍳 Surti Anda Ghotala elevated Surat’s famous egg street food with chilli cheese toast and shaved truffle — rich, creamy, and aromatic.

🦀 Kundapura Ghee Roast Crab was one of my favourites. Sweet crab was coated in deeply aromatic ghee-roast masala and paired with soft idli and coconut chutney.

After several rich, spice-heavy courses comes a 🍧 Pink Guava Sorbet; think of it less as dessert and more as a palate cleanser—cold, fruity, and refreshing before the heavier meat courses.

🐑 Malabar Lamb Ribs were tender and flavourful, accompanied by tangy gongura chutney and soft kalappam.

🐷 Coorgi Pandi Curry featured rich pork belly with gotu kola and pathri, drawing inspiration from the bold pork dishes of Coorg.

🦞 Lobster Vevichathu brought together lobster, Kottayam curry, yuzu and flaky Malabar parotta. Loved tearing the parotta apart to mop up that flavourful curry!

And finally…

🍮 Sticky Toffee Pudding with nolen gud, crisp brandy snap and burnt milk ice cream — warm caramel-like sweetness balanced by cold, slightly toasted ice cream.

I also tried their 🍚 Mutton Biryani, with fragrant, well-spiced basmati rice and tender pieces of mutton. The rice was flavourful and aromatic, with the richness of the meat and spices coming through in every spoonful.

So incredibly happy to be back at one of my all-time favorite places! @jholbkk never misses. ✨❤️

Got to reunite with the dishes I’ve been missing the most ~ the masala bun, BFC chicken, and pani puri are just as elite as I remembered. 😋✨

We also leveled up and experienced the Tasting Menu this time. Honestly? Just WOW. Absolute perfection from start to finish. 💯✨

Jhol can mean a simple curry. In Mumbai slang, it means mischief. Both feel right for a place that pours passion fruit water into pani puri and puts truffle on anda ghotala.

Swipe for everything I ate & save this for your next Bangkok trip 📌

As an Indian living in Bangkok, it is my prerogative to tell you which Indian restaurants are actually worth a visit — even if you are coming from India. And @jholbkk should be on your list.

As I ate my way through totally banging dishes, what I really appreciated was how much they stayed true to the original recipes and flavours, rather than deconstructing them too much. Jhol is an institution, with cuisine spanning nine coastal Indian states. I think it absolutely deserves all the praise I have heard about it.

I started with a THREE EYES IN THE DUSK, a gin based cocktail which was really good, followed by RAW GREEN MANGO WITH SALT & CHILLI as a palate cleanser. This immediately felt familiar to me, growing up in Calcutta. There were little bites with POMELO & PACHADI, and a CALCUTTA-STYLE BEETROOT CUTLET. Olivier had the tasting menu, while I moved between the tasting menu and à la carte.

Of course, I had PANI PURI. It is probably my favourite street food — I love that tanginess and the sudden hit of spicy water. But what really stood out for me was their CUTTACK-STYLE DAHI ALU BARA. I was in Orissa last May for a shoot, and a cyclone delayed the shoot, so I ended up spending a week there. I fell in love with the dish. The multiple layers of texture, all brought together with buttermilk, brought back that memory instantly.

I would go back just for this, and their MASALA BUN WITH PAV BHAJI & CURRY-LEAF BUTTER. The MALABAR PARATHA was so flaky, the MATTA RICE reminded me of Alleppey, and the MANGO CURRY was so comforting. The STICKY TOFFEE CARAMEL WITH NOLEN GUR and TENDER COCONUT PAYASAM were a perfect end to the meal.

For me, that is what makes a restaurant memorable — this meal took me from the coast of Odisha to Alleppey and straight back to growing up in Calcutta. And yes, I still think Calcutta has the best food in India.
