Down the Drain, 2026. Video, sound. 7’17” Loop

“The work explores memory not as a stable archive, but as something fragile, unstable, and constantly reshaped.”

Meet Joana Duarte @joanarted , a Portuguese visual artist based in the Netherlands. Her practice interrogates how photographs shape—and often distort—family histories and inherited narratives.

In her video piece Down the Drain, family photographs are submerged in water until their emulsions soften and the images dissolve. Once the drain opens, the liquefied remnants of a shared past disappear into the plumbing. The work gently questions photography’s promise of permanence, revealing the omissions and unresolved tensions that perfect family albums often conceal. It is a profound reflection on the sheer emotional labor required to hold onto personal and familial narratives.

Joana Duarte @joanarted was born in Portugal and is based in the Netherlands. She is currently a master’s student at the Frank Mohr Institute in Groningen.

New Images from the Past - 2024/2026
acrylic boxes; analogue archival photographs; water-based chemical solution

“New Images from the Past” is an installation that examines how family photographs shape, distort, and often overwrite lived experience. The work consists of archival family photographs slowly dissolving over the course of the exhibition. As the emulsion erodes, figures blur, colours bleed, and once-familiar scenes collapse into abstraction. Each transformation is unique and unpredictable, turning the act of viewing into a form of witnessing loss in real time.

The piece emerges from a broader investigation into the instability of memory and the political power of the family image. Growing up surrounded by photographs that presented an idealised family, one that contradicted lived reality, the artist began to question how images construct narratives that become accepted as truth.

I’m so happy to share that my installation “New Images from the Past” will be part of the exhibition “Strategy of Gestures” at @hippolytegallery, with the Helsinki Analog Photo Festival. Curated by Clément Beraud and Natalia Kopkina.

This performative installation transforms over time: photos from my family archive slowly vanish in a chemical solution, so each visit reveals something new.

Sonhei que os meus dentes caíram
2025
Instalação com transferências fotográficas sobre 32 esculturas de argila de celulose.

Sonhei que os meus dentes caíram. Soltavam-se devagar, desfaziam-se entre os dedos como pequenos fósseis a escaparem-me da boca. Ao acordar, restou o gesto de verificação, como quem procura vestígios arqueológicos.
O significado deste sonho varia entre culturas: presságio de morte ou infortúnio (Judaísmo, tradições chinesas), representação de familiares que partem (Islão), perda de controlo (folclore europeu), ou renovação espiritual (tradições nativo-americanas). Todas convergem na mesma verdade: os dentes representam identidade, herança e mudança.
Esta instalação propõe uma arqueologia do corpo: os dentes, marcados por imagens esbatidas, marcam o tempo em que o humano se inscreve no planeta como força geológica.
Os dentes resistem ao tempo. Ficam quando o resto desaparece. Porém, tal como a memória, também eles se desgastam. Estas trinta e duas esculturas são fragmentos imperfeitos que persistem. Gravadas com imagens desvanecidas, falam sobre aquilo que se perde, daquilo que tentamos fixar antes que desapareça.

A minha nova instalação "As Imagens Também Secam" vai estar em exposição a partir de amanhã, 7 de junho, em Alhandra.

Foi desenvolvida no âmbito do Laboratório de Coisas Inúteis II (@companhia.inestetica) - portanto, é inútil no melhor sentido possível.

A inauguração é às 17h, na Avenida Sousa Martins nº116.

A discussão sobre a utilidade da arte tem produzido inúmeras reflexões, que expressam visões distintas sobre a relação dos artistas, estado e sociedade nas diferentes arquitecturas de criação e difusão artística. Este laboratório de pesquisa, experimentação e criação de arte pública, destinado a jovens artistas até aos 30 anos, pretende fomentar a criação e a reflexão sobre as práticas artísticas contemporâneas e a sua relação com o contexto social, político e cultural, apostando na promoção do trabalho de artistas emergentes. No decurso da 2ª edição do laboratório (2025) foram concebidas 7 instalações.
