Darwin ➡️ Katherine ➡️ Nitmiluk

Humbled by termite mounds, showing my grace in natural hot springs, hiking through Nitmiluk, swimming in Leliyan waterfalls, sleeping under the stars, and the distinct honour to stand beneath 10,000+ year old paintings on Jawoyn sandstone, a moment that took my breath away 🧡 taken in Leliyn Edith Falls Katherine Gorge by @joanna_kitto

Deeply moved by Khaled Chamma’s work 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲, an illustrative dream entwining his being and the forces of his emotions against 22 artworks presented at West Space since 2023 that have impacted him.

With this work, Khaled draws on his memories, encounters and connections as a thank you note to the artists, arts workers, and the ongoing practice of art. He says,

“I want to represent memory in a language that feels authentic to me. What I like about art is both the opportunity to learn about issues that are important to artists, as well as what the artwork can speak to in your own psyche. 𝗙𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 depicts my own life experiences and events that have unfolded since my time with West Space — works that have all left me with a feeling of gratitude and awe.”

And as @rainbow_jalebi says, “𝗙𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲 should humble any arts writer, as Khaled demonstrates the capacity of his observations, akin to spiritual awakenings in each gestural stroke.”

Moorina Bonini’s 𝘊𝘰𝘥𝘦-𝘚𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨: 𝘊𝘳𝘦𝘢𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘚𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘈𝘭𝘪𝘨𝘯 𝘚𝘵𝘳𝘶𝘤𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘝𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘦𝘴 examines the ontological design of western institutions through practice and Indigenous-led research. With this body of work, @moorinabonini reframes wooden archival boxes from the Melbourne Museum, saying,

“These boxes were created to hold Indigenous South-East cultural material collected by anthropologists, ethnographers, farmers, regular people, donated to the museum collection or acquired by the museum.
They are echoes of the violent acts of colonisation that occurred across our woka (country) and wala (water) to which we as a people are still recovering and healing from today.

The burnt markings across the surface of the wooden boxes have been Informed by embodied cultural knowledge of mark-making. The historical and signifcant cultural practice of burning is used to reposition the narrative regarding these colonial containers. Indigenous cultural practice and knowledge is centred in this work that aims to acknowledge the dark history of historical over-collecting of Indigenous cultural materials.” by @joanna_kitto

Closing afternoon for 𝗠𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘁 𝗙𝗮𝗶𝗹, a work that has gently held us for two months. Thank you to 𝗧𝗶𝗻𝗮 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗳𝗮𝗻𝗼𝘂, and to 𝗖𝗮𝗿𝗹𝗼𝘀 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗼 𝗠𝗼𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗼 for responding so deeply to the work.

Look at the candles, try not to blink, let your eyes water.

Mouth something silently, something you can’t say out loud.

Stare at the fire and think of the sun.

Ezz Monem’s 𝘔𝘶𝘴𝘦𝘶𝘮 𝘰𝘧 𝘋𝘪𝘴𝘳𝘶𝘱𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘴 looks at acts of disruption in political and public space through the framework of an imagined museum institution. Showing at @connersconners, 𝘈𝘳𝘤𝘩𝘪𝘷𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘛𝘩𝘳𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘖𝘣𝘫𝘦𝘤𝘵𝘴 assembles artefacts associated with historical and contemporary incidents in which politicians were targeted with ordinary objects, tracing them through historical records, news reports, and online archives.

Congratulations to @ezzmonem 🥾
And shout out @brigitryan whose bowerbird ways perfectly suit a project that involves gathering niche, throwable objects 🤌 by @joanna_kitto

𝗧𝗶𝗻𝗮 𝗦𝘁𝗲𝗳𝗮𝗻𝗼𝘂’s 𝗠𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘁 𝗙𝗮𝗶𝗹 emerges from early memories of learning to sing ‘straight’, over a single flame, steadying her breath and vibrato to produce pure notes and not blow out the candle. Her vibrato, an engine filled with performative habits, identity, and selfhood, became disciplined through classical and jazz technical idioms.

On the voice in Tina’s practice, 𝗔𝗹𝗲𝘅𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗮 𝗣𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗶 writes,

“Voice can be a stand-in for bodies of all kinds, an extension of them, enabled by the physicality of sound — whether produced by something with a head, lungs, a mouth and vocal cords, or by another material configuration.

Perhaps in its multiplicity, voice is also something to tune in to; a tool for attuning. It might ask of us, human animals, to learn how to enjoy the messier environment of polyphony; to find harmony through negotiating tension and space, in the middle ground, with and around each other.

The art space could be and should be a space for rehearsing and nurturing both the capacity for voicing something responsibly and for in-depth, expanded listening. Empathy can only emerge because of embodied experience; we might need to hear that other breath, hum or song live, in the same room, in order to recognise ourselves in others.”
