I’ve been putting off posting about Saturday night, turning 40, starting this new decade. I wanted to find the perfect words to capture the joy of performing my EP surrounded by all of you. Instead, I found myself feeling something unexpected—grief woven into all this joy.

My mom and I had this thing—we used to joke that my birthday was actually her “birth” day too. “I’m the one who did all the work,” she’d say with that laugh that could fill a room. It was our day, something we celebrated together for years, in person and later over the phone in the time before she passed.

During her final days, as I was caring for her, she kept expressing guilt for being a “burden.” I would tell her there was no burden—only the privilege of my lifetime to show her my limitless love, to stretch beyond what I thought possible, to do everything in my power to help her through her darkest time.

When she passed, I made myself a promise. That the expansion of heart I experienced while caring for her wouldn’t contract back. That I would use this rare opportunity to pay it forward, to spread as much love and joy as I could, to help as many people as deeply as possible.

Because I could no longer give her the love I needed to give. And so the only way to truly keep loving her was to radiate that love outward—to everyone around me.

Saturday night, looking around at friends and this beautiful community we’ve built together, I couldn’t help but feel that this was still our day. That in celebrating my 40th, in finally sharing this music, in creating spaces for connection at 57—I was celebrating her too. Keeping that promise. Turning my devotion to her into devotion to sharing love with all of you.

To my friends who showed up, who danced, who listened, who held space for this moment that meant more than you could know—thank you. For being vessels for a love that needed somewhere to go.

After all, isn’t love all we need?

Still coming down from Saturday night. Every year, Halloween at 57 feels like more than just a party — it’s a collective act of creation. What makes it special isn’t just the music or the lights, but that so many of our community helps bring it to life. Volunteers, performers, set designers, DJs, musicians, photographers, builders — you guys turned an idea into a living, breathing world. It’s not just something we throw for the community; it’s something we create together, for each other.

There’s a unique kind of magic that happens when a space is filled with people who helped shape it — when a quarter of the room had a hand in making it happen, and the rest came to support the people who did. That sense of connectedness is what we care most about at @57.nyc, and it’s what makes these nights feel so alive.

From the water fountain that turned out to be serving electrolytes, to stumbling onto the catwalk mid-show, to 3 a.m. pizza, sunrise pancakes, and the 8 a.m. Domino Park selfie crew — it was one for the books. Playing the new EP live Saturday night has become a core memory for me. Thank you for helping us build something that reminds us what community can feel like when we create experiences both together, and for each other. ❤️ by @johnnyhwin
