My Year in Review.✨️

This time last year, I was praying for growth. As I approach the new year, I can confidently say my prayers were answered. My friendships grew stronger, my desires for my life grew louder, and I grew closer to God as I embraced unexpected changes and challenges.

🌱My blooming didn't always look like upward momentum. My growth required being uprooted, pruned, and repotted in strange places. It looked and felt a lot more like wilting to be honest. A friend told me that choosing growth meant choosing intentional discomfort. And boy was 2025 uncomfortable. But everytime I took a deep breath, trusted, and did something I wouldn't normally do, it was worth it. And everytime I procrastinated and resisted, I regretted it.

If I learned anything this year, it's that the life you want requires effort. Not just trying hard but trusting hard, believing hard, praying hard, expressing the hard things.

You are worth that effort.💫

from the journal of Jolie A. Doggett:

"Finding the right word to describe my 34th birthday and I've settled on LOVE.

I typically choose to spend my birthdays alone, as a time for self reflection and future planning but also as an excuse to not be disappointed in case no one wants to celebrate with me. If I'm already alone I can't be lonely, right?

I've spent my whole life trying to prove I can take care of myself by myself. For a good chunk of my life, that was my only option. But this June 23rd, 2025 (and honestly this whole year leading up to my birthday), my friends would not leave me alone. And I am so happy and grateful.

Today has been full of reminders of how loved I am by my community of family and friends and even strangers on the internet. My heart is so full.

It's a weird time to start a new year of life, a lot is going on in the world right now. But I'm full of hope in the midst of it all that as long as we're taking care of each other, loving each other, showing up, maybe things will be okay. Maybe none of us will have to be alone." -6/23/2025

Finally have a moment to myself to say THANK YOU to everyone who wished me a happy birthday today, thank you to everyone who celebrated with me today and over the weekend. Thank you for showing up and showing out and showing me care and love

Happy Birthday to me. 🎂❤️

It's been 2 years since I lost my job and life is not a piece of cake. 🍰
Being un/under/self-employed was never part of my plan. But today, I celebrate myself for surviving and thriving through the unexpected. Life is hard but I can do hard things.💫✨️

If you're also in transition and you're on the job hunt, be encouraged and be creative in the meantime. Remember, "you are not the work you do, you are the person you are." And you are gonna be okay. ♥️
If you wanna talk or cry or have a resume/application party, hit me up! I got time. 😉

“The glue to our marriage is our friendship. That’s how we started our relationship, as a friendship first. We’re walking in the same direction and building and hoping for the same things. That’s what’s worked for us.”

Tamela Mann’s latest album, LIVE BREATHE FIGHT, was a labor of love, but luckily love is her greatest motivation to keep going. “I think that’s what’s keeping me alive, the love,” the singer, actor, designer, and cooking show host told us, “God keeps putting people around me to love.” One such loveable person God has placed in her life is Mann’s business partner, co-author, co-star, and husband, David Mann. The pair have been coupled for “36 years with no separation,” Tamela Mann boasts, and they often appear on screen together in Tyler Perry’s Madea films or on their YouTube channel, MANN TV, that hosts her cooking show as well as other original programming featuring the couple. The pair do almost everything together from music to movies, and Tamela says the secret to their success in business and marriage is that they put their friendship first. She also shared that communication and adding sparks into their relationship helps. 💚

“I am someone who's always known what I wanted to be when I grew up. Little Jolie had BIG dreams, with her overachieving ass. Life has always been go, go, go, move, move, move, climb, climb, climb for as long as I can remember. But lately, life seems to be moving a little slower. Sometimes, life feels like it’s moving too slow and I should be doing more.

But I just want my little self to know I’m not giving up. Even when my vision of the future seems cloudy, I rest in the certainty that I will never stop dreaming, I will never stop trying. Clouds have always been my favorite anyway. In fact, I was born on a cloudy day! Clouds let me know something is coming, that things will eventually clear and brighter days will come through. The cloudy days of life don’t fill me with gloom. They fill me with hope for the possibilities. And I’m excited about those possibilities. ⛅️”

Today is my 33rd birthday! If you wanna give me a super cool gift, consider subscribing to my newsletter and podcast (@findingtherightwords_ linked🔗 in the bio). It’s free! but you’re welcome to upgrade if you feel called. Your support while I’m making little me’s dreams come true means so much. Kay bye! 🖤

"I get in my head a lot and sometimes, in my head is not a great place to be. I can be pretty mean to myself in my inner dialogue.

When I’m being buried alive by my own negative self talk, I imagine someone trying to rescue me. I look to my friends and family to protect me with validation and words of affirmation. But no outside voice can silence the louder voices in my head. I have to learn to rescue myself."

Every Friday during the month of May, I’ll be sharing journal entries under the theme “DEAR ME: Notes to Self” where I’ll be writing letters to myself of love, encouragement, advice, and hope for the future. Filling my journal with notes to myself. Writing to myself as someone outside of myself who could see my life with compassion, honesty, and kindness.

I hope you join me. Link in bio. 🌸

"There are so many definitions of love, so many descriptions of what it is, how it feels, what it looks like. There’s not a lot of guidance on… well, what it does. How do you show it? How do you live it? When love is in your life, how does it change you? Let's figure it out together." 📝

It's a new month which means it's time for a new writing challenge and this month, I'm thinking and writing about love. Subscribe to my newsletter (link in bio) to follow along on the journaling journey.

Also there are (about) 3 DAYS LEFT to register for my 6-week writing workshop Finding the Right Words about LOVE 💜. If you're looking to create a journaling ritual or you wanna dive deeper into the concept of love, check out my newsletter or head over to @hpsacredtext to register.

I love y'all, forreal.

"I love Black women so much.

I love my Black mother, grandmothers, God-mother, and aunties. I love my cousins, sisters, coworkers and friends. I love the Black women I don’t even know and who don’t know me because Black women have always been the loves of my life. Friendship and care from Black women have enriched my life. The prayers and support of Black women have saved my life.

I know I am my sisters’ keeper." ❤️

Today, I wrote a thing about how much I love Black women, how much Black women have loved me back, and how we must celebrate the Black woman writer whose work to explores how deep love between Black women goes. Link is in bio.

Pictured: An old photo with a Black woman who I love (@taylorcespedes ) in the city of (brotherly) love to emphasize my point about love.

"If you ever asked yourself (as I have) 'what would I do if I lived back then?' now is the time for the answer. And to be honest, “right now” has always been the time. There’s nothing new under the sun except you, and your brief time on this planet. Who do you want to be? What story do you want history to tell about your life?

I want to be remembered as someone who helped people. Who gave people a voice when they didn’t think they had one and who used her own voice to advocate for herself and others. It’s why I became a journalist, it’s why I started writing. And it’s why I’ll keep doing it. I think we all have a role to play, every role is different, every role is significant.

What role will you play in this history that will be written about today?"
