Transformation and process are approached as states in their own right, whether experienced as an inner condition, an external change, or the transformation of material. |“And then she was asleep, with silver tears running down her cheeks. Hall switched the car to auto-guide and put his arm around the girl. They purred softly up a hill, into unknown countryside. Then, a blast of icy terror tore at Hall. He hit the braking stud — The road ended a hundred feet away! On each side of the strip the very earth itself dropped off into impenetrable, stygian blackness — … ONLY THE NOTHINGNESS WITHIN NOTHINGNESS THAT MIGHT BE FOUND BEHIND THE DARKEST INFINITY …” — Daniel F. Galouye, Simulacron-3 (1964) ERASE / REWIND, interrogates the ontological instability of the object, mapping the processes through which presence is synthesized via repetition and symbolic projection. What appears present and stable is in fact produced within cultural and visual systems that usually remain unseen. Once these systems are disrupted, their underlying instabilities and the absences they conceal, come into view. |At night, when most shops are closed but their interiors remain brightly lit, shop windows continue their silent display. This logic of produced absence is not an incidental detail. Generating continuity by omission: The shop window performs visibility without content. Absence is not simply a lack, but an active component of the system, disappearing from view while still organizing perception. The works deal with narrative, the body, image or the lack thereof. Joosten’s works combine white cardboard boxes sourced from along Canal Street in NYC that initially housed replica designer accessories and merchandising, which function as an architectural display for different urban fragments. The project simulates a virtual world populated by conscious “identity units” leading everyday lives, unaware that they are only data in Simulacron’s servers. As people around him begin to disappear, Stiller finds himself plunged into a wide-reaching corporate conspiracy, one that calls into question the nature of his own reality.Part of the exhibition ERASE / REWIND by artist Jonathan Joosten @jonathan.joosten, which explores time, knowledge, and shifting levels of reality in the film. Featuring newly commissioned, site-responsive works, the exhibition explores how reality, value, and meaning are constructed through framing, repetition, and symbolic attribution. Working at the intersection of cinematic simulation and consumer display, Joosten examines how film, architecture, and exhibition formats shape perception, creating presence while simultaneously obscuring absence. Referencing the two films The Thirteenth Floor (dir. Josef Rusnak, 1999) and Welt am Draht (dir. Rainer Werner Fassbinder, 1973), as well as Kim Jones’s Dior Autumn/Winter 2025 runway show, the project reflects on simulated realities and the instability of what appears immediate and real. Developed between New York and Berlin, the exhibition draws on urban observations such as empty yet illuminated storefronts and the missing “13th” floor in American elevators, subtle signs of absence within systems of visibility. ERASE / REWIND brings these observations together, examining urban space and media as sites where presence is continuously staged and absence persistently operates. by @jonathan.joosten

‘ARCHIVED HERO (dilapitated)’ (2026) by Jonathan Joosten.Inkjet print, igepa 80g paper, oil pastels, fiberglass varnish, on wood, in artist frame160 x 110 x 6,5For a new series of works debuting in “Pattern Recognition,” Jonathan Joosten depicts images of 60s and 70s figurines originally sourced from online hobbyist forums. Stripped of their original commercial framing, the figurines are documented in shaky photographs whose margins disclose their petit-bourgeois domestic surroundings. Joosten highlights the gritty quality of these poor images through clear varnish seals and layers of fiberglass tape, a material whose manifold qualities make it both integral to the construction of internet cables and beloved in the DIY miniature scene.
