Pleased to announce that Pelican, 2009 is now officially part of the George Mason University Art Collection.

The first two editions of Pelican were the first artworks I ever sold. One to @andrea.pollan and one to Dr. Paul So. Paul, who founded @hamiltonian_artists and recently donated a portion of his collection to George Mason University, where he taught physics for many years. Dr. So assembled a collection that demonstrates an exchange between art and science, and I’m incredibly grateful that Pelican is now part of an institution.

Paul has been such an important supporter of my work over the years.

Pelican was created in 2009 as part of an early series of digital prints and animations exploring corporate logos, sacrifice, and power. The work reimagines the ancient legend of a pelican wounding itself to feed its young, placing the bird within an altar-like Gothic structure inspired by the British House of Lords. Ferrari logos pattern its beak, while tufted red leather replaces its skin, creating a strange hybrid between the natural and the synthetic.

One of my first 'cinematic' video installations made during my first year of grad school. 17 years ago, wow, I'm old.

This short 3D animation fuses Gothic architecture with an Emperor Penguin, creating a new absurd life form that is in a never-ending cycle of eating its own young. At the time, it was a breakthrough for me. Selected by @ryantrecartin for a group show at @voxpopuligallery and winner of the @wpadc Experimental Media Prize selected by Associate Curator Kelly Gordon, with a screening at the @hirshhorn , among numerous other international festivals and exhibitions.
