Artist Jonny Gent never imagined he would open a restaurant, and Sessions Arts Club eclipses that classification with its studio ethos. An extension of his artistic practice, Sessions has become a sanctuary of creativity and culture punctuating the romance of hospitality.

The newly released Food Volume I: Sessions Arts Club, published by Cabin Studio, is a tribute to the Sessions community. From kitchen to table and every step between, the book highlights 66 dishes and celebrates the people behind them, archiving the restaurant’s inner workings from its conception in 2021.

Today the former courthouse, Sessions House, is more inhabited than occupied by Sessions Arts Club. A quasi-institutional rigour of self-documentation is practiced. Plates, uniforms, equipment, fixtures, doodles, journeys, stairwells. ‘Quasi’ because the order is enigmatic: all jurisdiction and no law.

Even so, weighed out and assembled, the parts are put to work. At each sitting, they are fashioned into a provisional, precarious whole. You can help, too. There’s risk, though. The atmosphere is slightly conspiratorial.

Less of a mystery, the fashioning is the work of individual humans. Chefs, porters, waiters, reception, bar. Love is palpable: ‘Studio’.

Our present is defined by failing institutions, law, and objective measure. What is the relevance of Romanticism amidst a Post-Enlightenment melt-down? Not as the critique of self-evidently shabby authority. But, perhaps, as an invitation to join in making something beautiful: A project with ‘no claim to completeness or finality’. by @jonny_gent
