It’s almost here.
November 7th from 5-7pm

Irvine Valley College’s Art Gallery presents- The Glass Canvas: Contemporary Stained & Fused Glass. Showcasing acclaimed contemporary artists who are pushing glass beyond its traditional forms and exploring new ways of using the medium. Their work demonstrates how stained and fused glass can function not only as a decorative material, but also as a dynamic fine art medium.

“The evolution of contemporary glass over the last decade is due in large part to the innovations at Bullseye Glass and the open-door philosophy of Judson Studios, which has generously shared its institutional knowledge with an international community of makers,” said IVC Professor Joseph P. Gerges, curator of the exhibition. “In uniting these distinct voices, the show introduces audiences to a profound way of experiencing art and bearing witness to glass as an illuminated fine art medium.”

Featured artists include Quentin Black, Shay Bredimus, Tim Carey, David Flores, Amir H. Fallah, Joseph Gerges, Andrea Guzzetta, Suzanne Head, James Jean, Narcissus Quagliata and El Mac

An opening reception- Saturday, Nov. 7, at 5 pm at the IVC Arts Hall and Gallery, W4.103.
Admission is free and open to the public, and parking in Lot 6 will be free during the reception.

I can’t imagine what my life would be without these two, let alone who I would be. I definitely know I’d have more cash in the bank 😂! But riches aside, it’s only fitting that my return to painting in many ways be encapsulated in this piece, but it’s going to take me a while to finish this one. The journey is real folks! Four paintings down and 12 more to go in this sequential painting of my girls.

Quentin Blacks’ work falls somewhere between glass engineering and brilliant alchemy. His deep understanding of the technical processes involved in glass fusing has made him vital to other artists’ practices as well. His sculptural work is a glass and metal sculpture that clearly showcases the collision of these two worlds.
This piece will be on view in “the Glass Canvas”. Join us on opening night, November 7th from 5-7pm at Irvine Valley College. Read more about Quentin’s work below!

This piece reflects a transition for me, translating a longstanding interest in automotive design and mechanics into a new medium. By recreating an iconic symbol of automotive culture, the work connects my past and present areas of practice. It explores the idea that art and mechanics are not mutually exclusive, but can simultaneously share the same attention to design, material, and process.

David Flores’ monumental glass piece “the Muralist” elevates his traditional marking to a whole new level utilizing fused glass and lead lines to bring this image to life. This piece will be on view in “the Glass Canvas”. Join us on opening night, November 7th from 5-7pm at Irvine Valley College. Read more about David’s work below!

The Muralist was inspired by a quiet moment between artists. While working on a
mural, David Flores noticed a friend and fellow muralist struggling, not with the technical
execution of the painting, but with the weight of the responsibility that comes with creating
work in the public realm. Flores asked if he could photograph him in that moment, capturing
the vulnerability, focus, and quiet determination behind the artist’s expression.

Created in fused and traditional stained glass, The Muralist transforms that fleeting moment
into a lasting meditation on the emotional side of public art. Beyond paint and technique, the
work explores the sense of stewardship many muralists feel toward the communities they
serve. The desire to honor a place, respect its people, and create something worthy of
becoming part of the public landscape.

Rather than celebrating the finished mural, The Muralist celebrates the person behind it: the
artist carrying the unseen pressure to create work that will endure, inspire, and faithfully
represent its subject. Through his signature linework and the luminous qualities of stained
glass, Flores elevates an intimate moment into a universal portrait of artistic responsibility,
reminding viewers that every public artwork begins with an artist who deeply cares about the
people and places it is created to serve.

El Mac’s one-of-a-kind style takes on important topics that question today’s divisive social-political climate. Three works hang in the colors of the American flag in the upcoming show the Glass Canvas. Read more about his iconic works below and make sure to stop by the opening this Saturday, November 7th from 5-7pm at Irvine Valley College’s Art Gallery.

It seems that much of this country, if not the world, has been experiencing a growing climate of fear and confusion. Daily tragedies overwhelm and desensitize as we grow accustomed to hearing constant reports of killings by terrorists, criminals, and police. We face obscene and ever-worsening economic inequality alongside countless social and environmental problems. A dismal and surreal political atmosphere have contributed to a collective feeling of frustration and powerlessness.

I started working on this portrait of a woman in despair late last year as a response. This piece is also an homage to the great German social realist Käthe Kollwitz, who was known for her melancholy drawings and prints depicting the struggles and suffering of the working class from poverty and war. She was born 150 years ago in July of 1867, and her work is still just as powerful and relevant today. The figure was modeled after my wife’s grandmother, and like most of my paintings it was not intended as a specific portrait of just one person but rather a representation of many people. It is a simple, direct expression of grief and fatigue in troubled times.’

“It is mid-winter in America; a man-made season of shattered dreams and shocked citizens, fumbling and frustrated beneath the crush of greed of corporate monsters and economic manipulators gone wild (...)
We must all do what we can for each other to weather this blizzard. Now more than ever all the family must be together; to comfort, to protect, to guide, to survive...”
-Gil Scott-Heron (1975)

Shay Bredimus’ striking monochromatic glass work “Cartomancy” utilizes textures you have to see in person to fully appreciate. His exemplary piece will be alongside others in the upcoming show “the Glass Canvas”. Join us on opening night, November 7th from 5-7pm at Irvine Valley College. Read more about Shay’s work below!

“Cartomancy” draws from the practice of assigning symbolic meanings to playing cards as a form of divination. Created in collaboration with Judson Studios, this fused-glass work is a contemporary Gothic stained-glass composition illuminated from behind with LEDs and housed in a custom frame finished using a traditional Italian red-clay-over-wood technique.

Andrea Guzzetta’s beautifully detailed fused and stained glass works are showing in the upcoming show “the Glass Canvas”. Read what she has to say about her work below and make sure to see these beauties in person on opening night, November 7th from 5-7pm at Irvine Valley College.

These pieces explore different geological locations and the animal diversity there, much of it (sadly) endangered. Guzzetta uses a variety of techniques in her work including etched flashed glass, fusing, and vitreous (kiln-fired) paints and enamels. Her goal is to evoke a peaceful utopia where these disappearing worlds can find imagined safety.

This collection of painted and fused glass was first shown at her solo show at Corey Helford Gallery.

Tim Carey’s masterful handling of fused glass is showing in the upcoming show “the Glass Canvas”. Read what he has to say about his work below and make sure to see his signature style in person on opening night, November 7th from 5-7pm at Irvine Valley College.

The painted portrait first caught my attention when I discovered Rembrandt as a young art student. His light filled images evoked feelings in me that went well beyond just the admiration of a well executed painting. Since then I’ve sought to create evocative images- first with painting, then stained glass, and now fused glass.

“Eve” is a portrait made by creating thick sheets of painterly glass slabs, then cutting them up and placing pieces together like a mosaic. I then add ground glass “frit” to create gradients and transitions, before finally fusing it all together in the kiln. The piece is finished with a final layer of vitreous enamel, adding shaded and textural accents to complete the likeness.

Glass to me is the ultimate material for creating paintings. There is no image on the surface of the piece. The image IS the piece. Light is allowed to permeate glass from all sides, creating an image that is ever changing and truly alive.

Amir H. Fallah’s illuminating work, Silent Traveler, is showing in the upcoming show “the Glass Canvas”. Read what he has to say about his work below and make sure to see this mesmerizing piece in person on opening night, November 7th from 5-7pm at Irvine Valley College.

In Silent Traveler, Amir H. Fallah draws on the visual language of stained glass, building fragmented, layered figures that are at once revealed and obscured. The work considers identity as something shaped over time through movement, memory, and cultural inheritance. Against a larger backdrop of migration, conflict, and shifting borders, Silent Traveler evokes the experience of passage and the complicated relationship between vulnerability, resilience, and belonging.

Meet Suzanne Head, showing @ivcartdepartment the Glass Canvas. Opening Night, November 7th from 5-7pm

About the Art

Quetzal
The resplendent quetzal dwells in high altitude forests spanning from Mexico to Panama. Sacred to the Aztecs and Mayas, legends claimed the bird would die in captivity from a broken heart. Science later confirmed this as quetzals continued to die of high stress and improper diet when caged. Even today, it is extremely difficult to keep them.

Antes muerta que esclava será.

This piece was created by hand sifting glass powder onto sheet glass through tiny funnels, and pushing the powder into place with small brushes and nibs. Using a kiln, colored powder was layered and melted onto multiple sheets of clear glass and fused together.

Collective Memory
Our ancestors hunted animals, prayed to animals, prayed to many gods, prayed to one god. Women grew heir hair long, cut their hair short, revealed their breasts, concealed them. What remains in our hears and minds from when buried earth was on the surface? What do we tell ourselves is in the past, that keeps us from moving forward?

This piece was created by hand sifting glass powder onto sheet glass through tiny funnels, and pushing the powder into place with small brushes and nibs. Black vitreous enamel was used for the outlines. Using a kiln, colored powder was layered and melted onto multiple sheets of clear and white glass. The sheets were then fused together and cut to shape.
