As you may know by now, I do my own artwork. Sometimes that's a choice that frustrates the life out of me, as I work myself to the point of no longer knowing what looks good or not. I also take ages to do it due to time constraints and it means it delays the singles release.

This one was very different as I was also working on and with images entirely of myself taken by @akennedyphotographer from a sadly dreary day up in Tynemouth back in July. So I had to find a way of taking those images and making sure they echo the positivity and optimism of the song and of course my own lyrics.

So here are some alternate edited images that I worked on when trying to decide which version to go with.

Adam told me to smile on quite a lot of the shots throughout the shoot and for whatever reason that's something I get self conscious about but I'm very glad to have now broken that kind of thinking and now there's a happy version of me out there 🌞 by @joshatkinsonmusic

@thegatheringsounds was absolutely class, as you may well know and have seen and heard already!

Here's the only bits I got from the day, very important to not live on your phone when incredible festivals like this come along and when they are on your doorstep.

If I ever get a band together how I would love to play my part at some point.

The BEST time was had sharing my original music with the incredible @christinas.imagination 🎻🎹🎤 & @joshatkinsonmusic 🎸 at @dubsintdales this weekend! 🫶🏼✨

Honestly, this was one of my gigging highlights — being able to bring two things I love so much into the same space: yoga & music 🙏🏼🎶

There’s something so special about seeing people come together to appreciate art, connect, move, listen and just be free. 🥹✨

A huge thank you to @kennedymusicmgmt for getting me involved in this one! 🫶🏼

It all starts with a great lead vocal. Everything else is there to support it.

Here’s a quick production breakdown of the vocal layering in @joshatkinsonmusic's upcoming release, “Won’t Take Me Today”, out on all streaming platforms tomorrow, 25th September.

First up, I’ve soloed the lead vocal on its own, because that’s the foundation of the whole thing. If the main vocal doesn’t sound great by itself, stacking another 20 tracks on top probably isn’t going to save it.

From there, we bring in a double, which immediately gives it that lovely 60s-inspired thickness and width.

Then come the stacks of “oohs”, following the chord progression and helping fill out the arrangement without fighting the lead.

Finally, a few harmonies are added above everything else to give the vocal arrangement some extra height.

Nothing particularly mysterious, just lots of little decisions working together to make the vocal feel much bigger than one voice, and Josh absolutely smashed the performances.

“Won’t Take Me Today” is out everywhere tomorrow.

It’s good to have Josh Atkinson back with new music of his own (although I do love his duo/ supporting roles too!).

‘Won’t Take Me Today’ is released this Friday, 25th September, bringing a warm, nostalgic 60s/70s sound, some lovely harmonies and, of course, plenty of Josh’s excellent guitar work.

There’s more going on beneath that easy melody too… take my word for it, read my review, pre-save it (link in review), listen on Friday and tell me if it speaks to you in the same way…

Which microphone position do you prefer? 🎙️🎸

Same guitar. Same player. Same room. Similar microphones. Four very different sounds, and all of them completely usable.

Day seven in a row of working today, although it’s hardly working when the job is engineering somebody as talented as Josh Atkinson.

Before we started properly, I asked Josh if he’d mind me filming a quick acoustic guitar microphone position shootout for some of my students who were assisting on the session.

Thankfully, he obliged. He’s a good lad.

The microphones are all from pretty similar territory here, so what you’re really listening for is just how much position changes the sound.

At the neck/body join, we’ve got an AKG C414, cardioid, 80Hz HPF engaged, about 6" away. This is probably the most naturally balanced of the four to my ears, with plenty of detail without getting too boomy.

Then an AKG C214, again about 6" away with the 80Hz HPF, pointed towards the soundhole. Immediately there’s more low-end energy and it gets noticeably boomier.

Another C414 at the bridge gives a more resonant, woody sound. There’s less of the detail you get from the neck position, but loads of body.

And finally, an over-the-shoulder C214, positioned to give us something closer to what Josh himself hears while he’s playing.

This is just Josh warming up, too.

The finished master take sounds absolutely stunning.

So, which one? neck, soundhole, bridge or over-the-shoulder?

It's been a while since I've made this kind of post!

To delay no further, my next single Won't Take Me Today is out next Friday!

It's a slice of positivity in song form and if you're a fan of mid 60s twanging Beatles guitar sound and style of songwriting or the similar sound with The Lemon Twigs then this may well be a track for you

Always a joy to speak to Anna and Josh, separately or together, and see them play of course.

This time it was after their incredible set at Last Train Home Festival, where the set hadn’t quite gone to plan, however it evidenced their excellent musicianship, adaptability and talent in still producing a set that blew away a packed room.

Thanks for chatting afterwards; can’t wait for the next.
