Friday night wrapped up the baseball season. Hot days & nights, a lot of laughs, a few tears, but so much growth in one season. Seeing Milo start to grasp the game, develop some drive to improve, and build confidence in who he is beyond just what he can do makes me a proud dad. I’m really grateful for the @ozark_baseball_club_ coaches who always taught, corrected, and encouraged with the right tone, and the parents who cheered and encouraged every kid. by @joshveach

Dreamers dream, but builders build. Bet on yourself and do something you love.

I’m retiring the first purchase of the first business I started… It was Black Friday of 2009. Apple was running a deal and I pulled the trigger on this iMac and one of the earliest model iPads. Rashele and I had just purchased our first home a few months prior. Savings were depleted.

The very next day there was a break at the main water line to our house and water was pouring out of our front lawn and running down the street. After getting the water shut off I immediately had buyer’s remorse and thought of trying to cancel the Black Friday order.

I decided to stay the course. Turns out the city ended up covering the repairs at the break even though they had originally told us it was on our side of the meter.

It has been nearly 14 years since then and I can trace every dollar I’ve earned in the last ~12 years to two critical decisions:
1) Taking the initial risk of betting on myself; and 2) Fighting through the adversity.

I’m far from perfect and have had plenty of missteps along the way. I haven’t “arrived” by any means. But it sure is good to be able to pause for a second and appreciate the journey.

While it hasn’t been my daily driver for many years, this old computer has been with me through four homes and four offices. It is just the reminder I needed today to give thanks for a faithful God and the work ethic passed down to me from my parents.

Heavy is the heart.

Rashele and I rotate nights on putting the boys to bed and last night was my night with our oldest, Lyle.

As I laid next to him to say our nighttime prayer, my hand rested on his heart as his beat slowed to a resting rate. His eyelashes danced while he struggled to keep his eyes open, a battle he lost quickly. After a long couple days of travel and playing hard, he was ready for sleep.

What went through my mind next is an embarrassingly simple concept that I knew in my head but was due a much need reminder in my heart.

With the steady beat in Lyle’s chest gently pressing into my hand, I realized this is his heart FOR LIFE… That adult Lyle’s heart, the heart of the future, was right there beating in my hand.

It is this heart that will see injustices and the harshness of the real world and have to choose between growing cynical or working for change.

It is this heart that will experience shame and bear the consequences of selfish choices.

It is this heart that is learning how to treat people by watching me.

It is this heart that will experience love and heartbreak, and have to learn to heal.

It is this heart that will learn how to love fiercely and have to choose to fight fair.

It is this heart that may choose a partner for life and have to learn what sacrifice really is.

It is this heart that could one day be responsible for molding the hearts of my grandkids.

It is this heart that is capable even now of helping bring hope to a broken world.

And in that moment, I felt the weight of parenting…

Our hearts are made to be molded in the mundane. And it is in that mundane, the day in and day out moments that I admittedly take for granted or even allow to feel like a chore at times, where his innocent heart is being shaped into the man he will be. And with that realization, I’m praying to be more present and more patient.

In pursuit of wholeness and being able to be my best self for those I love, health was a focus of mine starting about halfway through 2021. That includes a tighter rein on what I eat, better sleep habits, and strength training three times a week with the accountability of a @barbell_logic coach. It’s been incredibly challenging and rewarding. It has pushed me out of my comfort zone and I’m better for it physically, spiritually, emotionally, and relationally.

The picture is from my last session of the year… a 320lb deadlift. It’s not much weight for people who have been training for a long time. But for me, it matters. But it isn’t the weight that is important to me. What matters to me is there is no chance I’m pulling that weight a year ago, six months ago, or even three months ago.

Doing this year what couldn’t be done last year starts with choosing to show up and do the work.

Showing up and doing the work helps you do today what you couldn’t do yesterday, so that you can do tomorrow what you can’t do today.

Steady, sustainable steps in the same direction.

I’m nearing an age where a crisis at this stage might be closer to being labeled a “mid-life crisis” instead of a “quarter-life crisis.” It’s a sobering thought and the rapidly growing kids and increasing grey hair remind me just how fast life is moving.

But the goal is to be grounded enough to avoid the crisis altogether... To focus on progress over perfection…to be as prepared as possible for what life may throw my way, control what I can, and leave the rest up to the Creator.

Slow and steady. Onward and upward.

Let’s show up, do the work, and believe our best days are ahead of us.

I hope 2022 is your best year yet. by @joshveach
