September is Service Dog Awareness month! 🦮🐕‍🦺

Joy wanted to take this time to recognize all service animals and their hard work! Tag a service dog or mini horse account so we can spread gratitude and regognize these hard working animals!

The breakdown of Joy’s task:
1. Non weight bearing guide task: my condition causes me to lose my eyesight at times which is extremely scary. Everything goes completely black and I’m unable to see at all. Joy guides me to an exit so I can get somewhere safe and allow her to task
2. Behavior interruption: when the pain is excruciating I curl up into a ball and Joy comes to break through my hands. This refocuses my attention on her and she performs tactile touch stimulation to ground me when the pain makes me dizzy and disorientated.
3. Seizure/panic attack response: Joy jumps on my chest when she notices changes in my breathing to remind me to sit down. She then performs DPT to slow my breathing and TTS until things have passed
4. Another form of behavior interruption to get my attention and break through my focus
5. Opening button doors: neuropathy and brains stem damage causes my hands to lose function, I have been trapped in a room alone having a seizure before which prompted teaching Joy this task. She can open and close doors at home as long as they are not clicked closed
6. Intelligence disobedience is the act of breaking a cue your handler have you such as “stay” in order to task or alert. Joy knows she can break her place when I sit with my legs out for her to perform DPT

“Service animals are defined as dogs that are individually trained to do work or perform tasks for people with disabilities.”

🔊 Do you wanna go to work? 🤑

One thing I have always done with Joy is ask her if she wants to work (and clearly she knows what this means). If she doesn’t want to work, she will stay put and not get up. It is unethical to work a dog that doesn’t want to be worked so I always make sure she is in the right mindset before she’s on the clock. 🦮 99.9% of the time she wants to work, but if it’s raining she may decide to stay in bed 🛌 I respect this decision and manage on my own or stay home these days. A service dog should not be forced to work and clearly this dog lovesss her job! Even when I disrupt her beauty sleep she chooses work 💤🤣

Of course, I always get final say. Considering Joy’s health right now and her upcoming surgery, this will be the last time she works for a while. 🤕 When she has the vets clearance, I will ask her if she is ready to get back to her job and she will decide! She is 11 now so retirement is approaching and I need to watch for the signs that’s she is ready to take a step back. My dog’s happiness always comes 1st ♥️

A dog mom’s version of her kids baptism ✝️🤍 not a technical “baptism” but we leaned into it 🤣 Vida and Joy got blessed at the church this morning and my lovely family came out to show their support for my fur baby!

✨ If you can’t, find someone who can!

In the service dog community, we strive to give our dogs the best life, even though we may not always be physically or mentally able. The disabled community puts their dogs first, and if we can, so can you! Working dogs are usually the happiest ones I see, because they are exercised, fulfilled, and loved. It scares me how many clients tell me on a daily basis that they don’t walk their dog…or train with them…or take them out of the house unless it’s for potty breaks. Utilize friends and family, hire a dog walker, get a doggie treadmill, exercise, train, enrich, and give your dog what they need!

Getting a dog is a commitment and they should be treated like family, not an accessory. My senior girl is almost 14 years old and she gets 2 walks on average each day. & I don’t mean around the block, we spend hours outside hiking. Even if it’s dark by the time I get home, or I’m in poor health, or I’m exhausted from working 12+ hours, I have to give my kids what they need!

This is your reminder to get out there and let your dog explore the world beyond the 4 walls they see everyday. by @joy_and_vida

Thank you for always including me in plans…even though 90% of the time I don’t end up going.

Chronic illness can be extremely isolating, but the friends who include you in plans help tremendously. Even if I am in a flare, or fighting exhaustion, it means so much when you invite me to plans. If I am up to it, you know I’ll be there. Unfortunately a lot of times I end up passing, but knowing that you thought of me and wanted to offer means so much. It’s easy to stop asking when your friend constantly turns down fun plans. It’s not that we don’t want to go, it’s that sometimes we don’t have the spoons or mental capacity to go. Doing anything with chronic illness is a lot more challenging than most people realize. When the invitations stop coming, it makes you feel alone and like you’re a burden to the people around you because you always need accommodations. Certain people stick around and prove that they you are worth it, even if plans need to be changed or rescheduled. So thank you for always asking and trying to include me in your life. I’m probably laying in bed or on the bathroom floor wishing I was there, but you giving me the option means more than you’ll ever know ❤️ by @joy_and_vida
