Thank you @walkmultipledogs for making my job so much easier every day! There are so many different ways we use this product, so I decided to take a little video while I used it in three different ways, for three different dogs, at the same time! 🐕🐕🐕

🐕‍🦺 I could talk about this topic for hours, but I’ll keep it short and sweet!

Here are a few key things to look for when starting your search for a responsible breeder…

🩻 Health testing: Don’t just take a breeder’s word that their dogs are health tested. Ask for the sire’s and dam’s registered names or registration numbers and verify their health testing results yourself through the OFA database. Research the breed you’re interested in so you know which genetic conditions they are predisposed to, and make sure the recommended health clearances for that breed have been completed. Each breed may require different genetic testing.

🧠 Early development programs: Responsible breeders often begin structured early development programs such as ENS (Early Neurological Stimulation), ESI (Early Scent Introduction), Puppy Culture, AviDog, or similar protocols. While each program is different, they are designed to provide appropriate early experiences that can support resilience, confidence, and healthy development when implemented correctly.

🐣 Proven parents: Parents with conformation, sport, or working titles have demonstrated desirable traits in the areas they were bred for. While titles don’t guarantee a puppy’s abilities, they provide evidence that the parents possess qualities that align with the breed’s purpose and can increase the likelihood of producing puppies with those traits.

🏠 Communication and living conditions: A great breeder should communicate openly throughout the process. Pay attention to where the dogs are raised. Is the environment clean, safe, and enriching? Are the puppies exposed to normal household sights, sounds, and experiences? Does the breeder provide photos, videos, and updates as the litter develops? A responsible breeder will also take the time to match each puppy with the right home based on the puppy’s temperament and your lifestyle, setting both you and your future dog up for success.

There is so much more that goes into choosing a breeder, but these are a few of the biggest things I recommend looking for when searching for your future puppy!

🛑Stop repeating your cues!

Give your dog a moment to process after you give a cue. Resist the urge to repeat yourself (I know it’s a hard habit to break!)

This “pause” can be a key learning opportunity for your dog. If they offer the wrong behavior first— don’t reward it. When they offer the correct behavior, mark it and pay them!

This applies to dogs that have been properly taught a behavior. If your dog is genuinely unsure of what you’re asking, you may need to spend more time building a strong foundation.

Try this out to improve your handling skills! 🐾

Joy’s Journey: From rescue dog to service dog 🦮

We have had so much fun doing library/school talks for kids. Each time, I’m blown away by how educated they are on service dog etiquette. Our goal is to spread awareness and education while the kids participate in interactive activities and listen to a story. Now, we get to share our own story which is so special. If you would like to book a story time with Joy and Vida, reach out to @rufftimecanine 🐕‍🦺

Every picture in the book is a cartoon generated version of our actual images. At the end of the story, you can check out all the real pictures we used to bring the book to life! This has been a work in progress for some time and I am so glad I finally get to share it with you! The intention was never to sell the book but with so many of you requesting copies, I would be thrilled to do so. Thank you for the continued support! ✨
