Building the current and Future Generation of African Climate Negotiators.

For a long time, young people have been advocating for meaningful inclusion in decision making spaces. However, meaningful participation requires more than just a seat at the table. It requires the knowledge, skills, and confidence to engage effectively, influence negotiations, and shape decisions.

To bridge this gap, the African Youth Climate Negotiation Centre @ayc_negotiation_center has been established to equip young people with the negotiation skills and knowledge needed to influence current and future climate policies

I am delighted to have been part of the first cohort of the African Climate Change Negotiations Training, an important step towards strengthening African youth participation in climate diplomacy and decision making.

I hope this opportunity will continue to be extended to more young people across Africa, ensuring that the voices, perspectives, and priorities of young Africans are not only heard but also meaningfully reflected in climate negotiations and policy outcomes.

As we gear up for #COP31,I had the opportunity to participate in the Pre-COP31 Technical Workshop, where I shared my perspectives on how development partners are helping translate global climate commitments into tangible action at the community level. KeyJana Impact project @keyjanaimpact stands out as a strong example of how development partners can collaborate with young people to turn climate commitments into practical, locally driven solutions.

We hope this support will continue to be extended to young people who have demonstrated that, when trusted, empowered and adequately resourced, they can deliver meaningful climate action and drive sustainable change in their communities. As we look ahead to #COP31, investing in youth-led climate initiatives must remain a priority, ensuring that young people are not merely participants in climate discussions but also active partners in shaping and implementing solutions. After all, meaningful climate action begins when commitments are matched with resources, partnerships and trust in the power of young people to make a difference.

As we gear up for COP31 @turkiyecop31 , YOUNGO, the official youth constituency of the UNFCCC and one of its nine constituencies, usually engages young people to develop a set of priorities and recommendations that will contribute to the global climate negotiations. These priorities are expected to be discussed and further shaped through the Conference of Youth (COY), creating an important platform for young people to articulate their perspectives and influence the climate agenda.

To ensure that perspectives from local communities are reflected in this process, Local Conferences of Youth(LCOY) are usually also organized in different countries to gather the experiences, priorities, and recommendations of young people at the national and grassroots levels. In Tanzania, young people will gather in Dodoma from 15 to 17 September to discuss key climate challenges affecting young people and communities and develop recommendations that will feed into the broader youth climate agenda ahead of COP31.

I am particularly pleased to contribute to this process by speaking about how Tanzania can better approach the intersection of climate adaptation, loss and damage, climate-induced migration, and disaster risk reduction. This discussion is important because these issues are increasingly interconnected and require coordinated approaches that place young people and local communities at the centre of climate action.

KEYJana Impact takes the stage in Dodoma!
Today, at the International Youth Day 2026 commemorations in Dodoma, KEYJana Impact took the stage to discuss youth participation in climate action and opportunities in the Green and Blue Economy.
Through the panel, DFC Fellows behind the implementation of KEYJana Impact, together with members of the EU Youth Sounding Board for Tanzania, highlighted why young people must be more than participants in climate conversations they must be innovators, problem-solvers, policy actors and contributors to climate solutions.
The discussion explored how access to policy information can help young people improve their work, develop solutions, participate in decision-making and unlock opportunities in the green and blue economy.
This is the heart of KEYJana Impact: turning policy information into understanding, participation, innovation, opportunity and action.

Hongera kwa vijana wenzetu kuanzisha @keyjanaimpact , cc @denmarkintanzania @actionaidtz by @juliusemuhindi

How far are Tanzanian youth truly engaged in shaping the future of climate action, the green economy, and the blue economy?

Are young people meaningfully involved in civic decision-making? Are our voices genuinely represented while policies and negotiations are taking place behind closed doors? And how many spaces are intentionally created for youth not just to participate, but to influence decisions that will define our future?

These are some of the important questions I had the privilege of discussing during an inspiring panel at the official launch of the KIJANA Impact Project @keyjanaimpact a TZS 1.2 billion initiative dedicated to empowering young people across Tanzania.

I was thrilled to share my thoughts on youth leadership, climate action, and the immense opportunities within the blue and green economy. One thing is clear: Tanzania’s youth are not just beneficiaries of change we are innovators, leaders, and partners in building a resilient and sustainable future.

Creating meaningful opportunities for youth means more than inviting us to events. It means giving us a seat at the decision-making table, investing in our ideas, trusting our leadership, and ensuring our voices shape policies, investments, and solutions.

To every young person in Tanzania: the time to act is now. Learn. Lead. Innovate. Collaborate. The future of our oceans, our environment, and our nation depends on us.

Together, let’s build a generation that doesn’t wait for change we create it. 🌍💙🌱

As we reflect on the successful launch of KEYJana Impact last weekend, we're filled with gratitude for everyone who joined us and made this milestone possible.
KEYJana Impact is a youth-led initiative implemented by DFC Tanzania Fellows in partnership with @actionaidtz and supported by @denmarkintanzania. Over the next 18 months, the project will expand young people's access to policy information, strengthen civic participation, and advance climate justice across Mainland Tanzania and Zanzibar through leadership development, policy dialogue, strategic communications, digital engagement, evidence-based advocacy, and opportunities in the green and blue economy.
When information flows, accountability grows.
Thank you to everyone who attended the official launch and to everyone who contributed to making it a success. Your presence, support, and commitment are helping build a future where young people have the information, voice, and opportunity to shape the decisions that affect their lives.

Diplomacy is a bittersweet profession. You meet colleagues who become friends, and then, before you know it, it is time to say goodbye.

Today, I had the pleasure of bidding farewell to Ambassador Christine Grau, the European Union Ambassador @euambtanzania to Tanzania, as she prepares to conclude her mandate. Over the past two years, I have had the privilege of serving as her Youth Advisor, through the @euysbtanzania an experience that has been both professionally enriching and personally rewarding.

This journey gave me a unique opportunity to gain first hand insight into how the European Union @euintanzania works in close partnership with the Government of Tanzania to advance shared priorities. It also allowed me to contribute the perspectives of young people by providing input into the design and implementation of programmes and policies that better reflect their aspirations and needs.

Thank you, Ambassador Christine Grau, for your trust, collaboration and unwavering commitment to empowering young people. Your leadership has inspired many of us, and your contribution to strengthening the partnership between the European Union and Tanzania will leave a lasting legacy.

I wish you every success in your next chapter. May the road ahead bring you continued fulfilment and many more opportunities to make a positive impact.

DKT.
