If you haven’t stopped watering outdoors yet, consider this your reminder!

After October 15, your lawn no longer needs supplemental irrigation. Cooler temperatures, shorter days, and fall precipitation mean your lawn needs much less water. Turning off your sprinklers for the season now helps conserve our water resources and protect supplies for the year ahead.

However, don’t forget about your trees or the steps needed to protect your irrigation system through fall and winter! Trees, especially young and newly planted ones, may still need occasional hand-watering if the soil is dry. Before freezing temperatures arrive, winterize your irrigation system by shutting off the water supply, draining or blowing out sprinkler lines as appropriate for your system, and protecting exposed backflow preventers and pipes from freezing.

Every drop saved counts. Life is better with water. 💧 To learn more about protecting our shared water resources, visit learn.jvwcd.gov. by @jvwcd

Do you know where your drinking water comes from? If you’re located in our service area boundaries (which covers much of the Salt Lake Valley), then the journey of your water begins in the mountains. From there, we capture it, treat it, and distribute it throughout the valley for municipal use. Learn more about the quality of your drinking water at jvwcd.org. Or head to our 🔗.

What a spooktacular evening! 👻

Thank you to everyone who joined us at Conservation Garden Park for our Halloween celebration! We loved seeing so many creative costumes, admiring your amazing pumpkin art, and watching our community get into the Halloween spirit while learning a little about water conservation along the way!

Of course, the scariest thing of all is water waste! 💧 We’re grateful to bring our community together to celebrate, learn, and discover how waterwise landscapes can be beautiful, vibrant, and full of inspiration all year round!

We’re already looking forward to celebrating with you again next year! In the meantime, our garden will stay decorated through the end of October, so there’s still time to enjoy a little Halloween magic. 🎃 Whether you’re looking for seasonal fun, inspiration for your own landscape, or new ways to save water outdoors, we hope to welcome you back to Conservation Garden Park soon! by @jvwcd

Now that we’ve stopped outdoor watering for the season (hopefully you have, too!), there are still a few things to take care of before we can officially call it the end of watering season. As temperatures drop, water left in your pipes and equipment can freeze, expand, and cause costly damage.

Shaun, the Conservation Garden Park Manager, is here to walk you through five important steps to protect your irrigation system before the first hard freeze!

Proper winterization helps protect your system, prevent costly repairs, and reduce water waste when spring rolls around. 💧 Not sure how to winterize your system safely? Send us a message, drop a comment, or contact an irrigation professional for help.

We’re running out of time to save water outdoors this year, and every drop we save now matters. 💧

The reservoirs that supply most of the Salt Lake Valley’s water are about 30% lower than average for this time of year. Water saved this fall stays in storage for next year, helping us prepare for whatever winter may bring. If it is anything like last year, we will be glad we saved it.

If you’re still watering your lawn after October 15, it’s time to stop. Let’s finish the season strong and carry more water into next year!

Last week, our Board of Trustees toured several facilities that play an important role in our region’s water system, including:

• Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District’s Main Treatment Plant (JVWTP)
• Metropolitan Water District of Salt Lake and Sandy’s Point of the Mountain Water Treatment Plant (POMWTP) and Interconnect Vault
• Central Utah Water Conservancy District’s Groundwater Polishing Plant in Vineyard
• Central Utah Water Conservancy District’s North Shore Terminal Reservoir

Tours like these provide an opportunity to see the infrastructure that supports our region’s water system and the ways we work with partner agencies to strengthen our collective water resilience.

By diversifying our water supply portfolio, investing in infrastructure, and strengthening connections with our regional partners, we are working to build a more resilient water system that is better prepared for changing conditions and potential emergencies while continuing to provide reliable water to the communities we serve. 💧 by @jvwcd

Before it reaches your faucet or sprinkler, your water has a long story. 💧

This week is @American Water Works Association’s Source Water Protection Week! We’re highlighting the importance of protecting the lakes, rivers, streams, aquifers, and watersheds that provide the water we rely on every day.

Protecting our source water helps support clean, reliable water for our communities now and into the future. From conserving water to preventing pollution, we ALL have a role to play in caring for these important resources.

We’re seeing the impact of our community’s conservation efforts, and it’s worth celebrating. 👏

Summer is consistently our highest water use season, so seeing water use nearly 16% lower than last year this summer is incredible progress. Overall, our community’s water use is down 11% this year, and that is something we can all be proud of. Thank you to everyone who has done their part to conserve water. Every adjusted watering schedule, sprinkler check, and decision to use a little less has helped move us in the right direction.

And now, we have an important opportunity to keep that momentum going! As temperatures begin to cool and more rain is in the forecast, please water your landscape once a week or less through October 15.

Starting October 15, outdoor irrigation should be stopped for the season. Until then, take advantage of the cooler weather and changing conditions to give your landscape what it needs, without giving it more water than it needs.

This shoulder season may look a little quieter, but the choices we make now can have a BIG impact. Thank you for continuing to conserve with us and for helping protect our water supply for the months and years ahead.

Let’s keep it going. 💪

Learning, sharing and connecting with water professionals across the Intermountain West!

Several members of our team recently attended the 2026 IMS-AWWA Annual Conference in Logan, joining water professionals from across Utah and the region for several days of learning, collaboration and knowledge sharing.

Our team also had the opportunity to share their own expertise through conference presentations, contributing to conversations about the work being done to manage and protect our region’s most valuable resource.

We’re grateful for opportunities like this to learn from our peers, share what we’re working on, and bring new ideas and perspectives back to Jordan Valley Water Conservancy District. And, of course, there was plenty of time to enjoy good conversations and have some fun along the way!

Thank you to the Intermountain Section of the @americanwaterworksassociation for bringing Utah and the region’s water professionals together. 💧

With cooler temperatures arriving and more rain in the forecast, landscapes need significantly less water.

All summer, we’ve asked you to water your lawn twice a week or less. Now, we’re asking you to do a little more and cut back to ONCE a week or less.

This year is different. It has required all of us to adapt. Our landscapes may not look perfect, and that’s OK. If we don’t keep watering like we do during the hot summer months, we can make a significant difference in how much water storage we carry into next year and put ourselves in a stronger position.

We don’t know what kind of winter we’ll have. A strong snowpack could give us more flexibility, while another dry year could make having as much water stored as possible even more important. Using less water now helps us prepare for either possibility.

Visit learn.jvwcd.gov to learn how simple changes can make a meaningful difference for our drinking water supply.

🌱 900+ Landscape Incentive Program applications and counting!

This year is different. We set a goal of 600 new applications for 2026, and our community has already blown past that goal, with several months still left in the application period. Last year, we received just over 400.

These six properties are just a few of the amazing Landscape Incentive Program projects completed and installed this year! 🏡 Together, they could save an estimated 144,548 gallons of water each year with efficient irrigation practices.

But the numbers tell only part of the story. This season, we haven’t had a single hard fail at a final site visit. That’s a testament to the education, consultations, and resources our Conservation Programs team provides throughout the process.

We’ve worked hard to improve that support year after year, helping participants feel confident creating landscapes that use water more intentionally. 💧

We’re grateful to our staff and to every community member who is making changes in their landscape and helping build a more water-conscious community.
