My 21st birthday was today. I had the privilege of celebrating it in this beyond beautiful little corner of the world, one of the many places responsible for my existence. As I reflect on my 21 years of breathing and becoming, it's a story that could not be told without the acknowledgement of the experiences of my parents and their parents; without places like New York, Guayaquil, Bonao, and San Juan; without the fruits of immigration, ultimately.
We as a nation are underreacting to the atrocious state-sanctioned violence and domestic terrorism committed by ICE. Much of US intervention and destabilization of other countries historically to present (ESPECIALLY within Latin America) have manufactured the very conditions in which people are forced to flee from in the first place. Migration is not a crime; it is a response, and it is a right, as we are 'citizens' of the EARTH. I encourage you all to remember your roots, to honor the stories of your lineage that amalgamated to gift you existence, and to fight fiercely for those around you to be able to live to see another day, with their dignity intact. We are all indebted to each other as human beings; we owe each other love over hate, and basic human decency should never be negotiated. Utilize your strengths to aid your community in the ways you can, no performativism. Find a way to be of service. After two semesters abroad, as I return to the city I love most, I know I will continue to do so.
