We made it to Mexico !! Although it’s too soon to celebrate, we are so stoked to be here!Hopefully the journey can continue on South but while we wait for customs to clear our boat, here are some of the highlights from the trip down the coast.

1) an emotional goodbye pulling out from the dock that was our home for 2 years
2) the sunset of our first night offshore; stunning, ominous, foreshadowing the lightning that would barrage us all through the night
3) showing off our mighty catch of albacore tuna off the coast of Oregon
4) sailing under the Golden Gate Bridge which got spicy very fast
5) Ka’sala all glowed up in Morro Bay, California
6)a glimpse of one of our favourite anchorages on Santa Cruz Island

The final week in La Paz, BCS!
We were fortunate to spend an abundance of time anchored out in front of this very special city. Starting in December of 2022 when we first arrived in Mexico, we spent the holidays with our floating sailing community, followed by visits from friends and family over the next couple months. We fell in love with this city because of the friendlines and ease it provides sailors, in big part due to the Club Cruceros at Marina de La Paz. There's everything you need and more and getting to participate in the local culture at events like Carnaval make it so special. In 2024 we made a point to avoid La Paz completely as it has a way of sucking you in and we had goals to explore mainland Mexico that year. Last April we made it our last big stop to reprovision before our offshore leg to Hawaii. Meghan on SV Kelea arranged a group chat for all sailing vessels heading from Mexico->Hawaii->PNW and those of us in La Paz gathered for dinners and talked over the details of our offshore plans. This group was invaluable for our sense of safety; we shared information on everything from weather, port authorities, sail arrangements, and fish counts to what meals were getting us through the hard days. It felt so reassuring to have the moral support of everyone else going through the same unique extremeties that we were and I'm really grateful for the Kelea crew on leading the charge in more ways than one. Whenever I think of all the places we've seen together I am filled with gratitude for sailing friendships <33

Some more Sea of Cortez snapshots on film; the sunset's cast over San Juanico, showering by solar bag in the cockpit during the week of watermaker installation, and a delicious beachside meal off the anchorage where we spent my last birthday. I'm so happy we revisited this area again before departing Mexico, I have so many memories to hold dear from this part of the world and I can't wait to go back someday.

Sierra de la Giganta & San Javier

Last February we flew direct Comox to Loreto where Ka'sala was moored in a protected anchorage just south of this first picture in Puerto Escondido. This is such a special region of Baja, from the sea to the sky it's truly stunning and this visit we were lucky to have friends show us around by car to some places we'd never seen before. The San Javier mission is way up in the desert mountains and still has a small community living there, as well as an ancient olive tree whose fruits you can sample! The Loreto area is our favourite cruising grounds of Mexico and everytime we visit we find another reason to love it even more.

On Friday August 29th, 2025 Ka’sala returned to Comox after 3 years and 13 days abroad. She sailed us down the west coast to Mexico, up the Sea of Cortez, over to mainland Mexico as far south as Barra Navidad, back up the Sea of Cortez and then over to Hawaii, then Alaska, then back down the west coast to Comox. We put in a lot of hard work and money into her to make this trip happen, not to mention how well loved she was previously to us. But we can’t understate how sea worthy and incredible of a sailing vessel Ka’sala is. She’s small but mighty and may even have the most sea miles for her make. She’s done multiple Pacific loops in the past, as well as going through the Panama Canal and up the East Coast of America. We have no plans of selling or retiring her at any time, but she is going to get a whole lot of TLC these next few years here at the Comox Valley Marina. We’re planning to do lots of local weekend sailing with trips around Vancouver Island and then eventually back up to Haida Gwaii and Alaska in the next year or two. Thank you to everyone who helped make this dream possible through your love and support. A big shout out to all the incredible friends we made along the way, including @sailingdetour for this drone footage and a special shoutout to one of Ka’sala’s previous owners; Doug 🤍 Thank you Doug & Lyneita for entrusting us with Ka’sala, believing in us and mentoring us throughout the entire journey… and for being there with open arms at the home base 🤗
Cheers! 🍾🥂 taken in Comox Marina by @kasala.sv

After a blissful couple weeks exploring the bays and hot springs around Baranof Island, Alaska, we navigated through Rocky Pass and then received the most devastating news of my entire life. Everything from that point started falling apart. I could barely hold it together and Wren had to single-hand sail some of the gnarliest conditions we’ve had in years. We were rushing to get back to Canada so that we could potentially hop on a flight but the winds, tides and mechanical gods were against us. Our alternator sheared off its mount and then later, melted its wiring. Our gear shifter snapped off as we were pulling into a fuel dock. My mental state was spiralling as I felt increasingly trapped on the boat and not in control of anything. Despite feeling so far away from the people we need to grieve with, Wren handled every disaster in stride and our friends and sailing community were there for emotional support. In Ketchikan, the friendly locals helped us get our spare alternator ready which Wren installed while I snuck away to birthday shop for her and get some exercise. SV Harmattana and SV Mandolyn who we met in 2022 hosted us and shared some much needed laughter. On August 15th, a day shy of exactly 3 years since Ka’sala left Canada, she re-entered. These pictures are the medicine we received once back in our home country, back with friends and knowing we’ll be home very soon. I’m so grateful for my friends in Prince Rupert for being there with open arms. I’m deeply sad but don’t want to take any of these moments for granted. Friendship is the best part about being alive so let your friends know you love them all the time and make happy memories whenever you can cause it may be all you’re left with after they’re gone. taken in Prince Rupert, B.C by @kasala.sv
