Happy Halloween from our crew! by @katiedeblock

As we prepare to launch our booking platform (STAY TUNED ✨), we are very excited to introduce the woman who has helped build Annora Suites into the beautiful space it has become, and will be taking care of our guests.

Meet Margaret Smart, Operations Manager at Annora Suites!

With an Honours degree in Political Science from Western University and a Master of Divinity from McMaster University, Margaret brings more than 30 years of leadership experience in the human services and non-profit sectors. Her work has included roles as a counsellor, advocate, program developer and manager, pastor, and executive director. She has both taken and taught courses in conflict resolution and continued professional development in trauma-informed care.

Margaret is passionate about building strong, compassionate communities and supporting people through change and challenge. However, having spent much of her life in very serious work, Margaret has also learned to take downtime seriously. She is a firm believer that life is better with a good story, a good laugh, and the occasional kitchen dance party with her 3 daughters ❤️

We are very grateful to have Margaret leading our team at Annora Suites. She brings not only an incredible amount of skill and organization, but a lot of heart & care which we know will be felt by our guests.

Thank you for all you do Margaret, and we can’t wait to open our doors at Annora with you 🍾🥂 by @katiedeblock

Happy happy 13th Birthday Anna Jane!

You are the champion of ”To do” lists, the kindest of friends, silly in all of the best ways, and the heart of our home ❤️ I am so excited to see what your teenage years bring 🥰

We love you so very much, and can’t wait to celebrate you today! by @katiedeblock

When I was 21 years old and in my first semester of law school, I developed bulimia. I fought it for over 5 years before I began the process of healing ❤️

I will never forget what it felt like to be a young person struggling with an eating disorder. I felt so much confusion and shame, and it took years to start appreciating my body for what it is: a beautiful vessel through which I get to experience this incredible life ✨

This personal experience is one of the reasons I am very excited to partner with the NEDIC to bring these workshops to Stratford. As a parent, I find these conversations more complex than ever. There is so much content our young people have to navigate now, and there are few road maps for them to follow. Social media remains so new in the grand scheme of things, and very much so in the context of this conversation.

So come join us! We are going to confirm a venue once we see how many people would like to attend. There will be food, community & some great conversations 🙏

Hope to see you there & please share with anyone you think may be interested in attending!

This week I am taking my first Management Week since I started @kdblaw nearly three years ago 🍾

By Management Week, I mean a week where I am taking less client meetings, and getting done the things on my to do list I have been doing on evenings and weekends for 3 years: reviewing HR policies, working on budgets, assessing marketing direction, problem solving, working on my 2027 business plan, setting goals for both personal & professional growth, etc., etc. And….etc. 😉

I have shared a lot about my beliefs as a business owner in how supporting your team’s wellness is neccessary to create a thriving workplace ✨ I have spoken less about supporting leadership in that same regard. Mainly, because that is not something I have always done well for myself 😏

But with every season, I get to tackle the next level of what leadership means to me. And as I have come to learn, I have to be healthy, well rested and well supported to show up and do the best job I can. When I am over-worked, over-stressed or feeling spread too thin, my leadership ability is impacted. I have learned that by taking better care of me, I am taking better care of other people ❤️ And this applies at home as well as in the office.

So this week is about starting to practice even more of what I believe. And that means creating space and time for myself to be creative, well rested and complete management tasks by the light of day a little bit more often ☀️🥂

Today I bought my new favourite sweater. Then I promptly set about defending my millennial ways of fashion to my daughters who have been told tights + big sweaters aren’t a way of life 🤷‍♀️

I mean, when you are parenting, making sure you get oil changes, taking care of your home, working full time, trying to eat spinach and investing in your community, who has time to keep up with the latest fashion trends?!?

But mainly, there is a duck on it. 🦆

I am feeling so much gratitude today.

It was nearly one year ago, on October 15th 2025, that Justin and I purchased 38 Albert Street, Stratford. Within that year, we have renovated it into both a beautiful home for my firm @kdblaw, and our new AirBNB @annorasuites. ❤️

To say this past year was busy and overwhelming at times would be an understatement, but along with the help of our incredible support system and many people who have believed in us, WE DID IT! 🥂 And the best part is, this building has started to become more than just a space for work. It is becoming a gathering space for our community. It has already hosted its first baby shower, spontaneous end of day drinks with family & friends stopping in to join, and Anna will be having her 13th birthday party here next weekend. The life we are building at 38 Albert feels like something special, and wasn’t something I anticipated. It is a gift ✨

A special thank you to both @ladonnaboersma for overseeing the KDB Law move and @margaretjoysmart for being our right hand at Annora Suites. We could not have done it without you 🙏

Happy happy Thanksgiving!

Starting my weekend of gratitude now 🙏

I am grateful for girls night with my amazing daughters ❤️

I am grateful for my beautiful nephew, sleeping peacefully and getting ready to burst into the dawn earlier than we will be ready for 😅

I am grateful for my husband and a moment of pause after completing our most recent project 🥰

Our latest project is coming together! Justin & I spent the morning at @annorasuites hanging art, placing furniture & getting excited about this beautiful space ❤️✨

It feels good here, and we can’t wait to share it with guests soon! by @katiedeblock

We’ve named the suites at our new AirBNB after 4 of our greatest loves ❤️ Anna, Nora, my Mom & my Grandma Skinner ❤️

It’s nearly time to open our doors 🍾

@annorasuites by @katiedeblock

Since my girls have become preteens, I have loved watching them be with their friends ❤️ When their friends come over, a new universe enters the house. One in which Justin & I are very much out of place.

Our girls and their friends talk in a language we don’t understand (What is “rizz” and what does it mean?!?!), perform coordinated dances on demand (When have Anna and Nora been rehearsing these dances?!?! How did we not know they could perform such things?!?!). All in all, I rarely know whats going on, and stick to my book in the corner, trying not to look “sus” 😏

So much has changed from when I was 12. But there is one big thing I have noticed has not.

I remember around this age becoming acutely aware of my body. I worried about how it looked, and the space it took up. It came up constantly with friends- our bodies, other people’s bodies, bodies on TV. Particularly as a young girl I remember it being such a painful thing- worrying that my body somehow wasn’t what it should be.

When I am spending time with young people, I hear this same worry. The worry that somehow their creativity, intelligence, sense of humour and kindness are not good enough if their body is not good enough.

My girls and I have started talking about this more, and we would like to talk about it more in community. Some of the things we would love to learn more about are tools to navigate social pressure around body image, and how to deal with the impact of social media.

We have found a workshop put on by the NEDIC, and have asked them to facilitate one locally this Fall geared towards children ages 9-13 and their caregivers ✨ Here’s a link to the workshop description: https://nedic.ca/community-education/elementary-middle-school-students/?utm_source=chatgpt.com

Now we just need to pick a venue! Hence this post- if you or someone you know is interested in attending, leave a comment or DM me. That will give us a gauge on where we should host!

It’s not an easy conversation. But its the hard conversations that I find usually lead to the very best things 🙏💕
