To say that sports has shaped my life would be an understatement. And along the way, sports has introduced me to the most amazing friends. Proud of these friendships and these incredible women. Fun to bring this special group together to watch @gophervolleyball take on Meeeshegan and work their way to a win. by @katieharms

The Power of the Podcast (and of an elevator ride)

Today I had an appointment with a new cardiologist. It went fabulously, by the way. He’ll be a partner in health, not sick care.

The parking ramp was a bit of a tangletown, but I found my way back just fine. (My husband says my sense of direction comes from years of being in shopping malls.)

At the elevator, a woman was paying for her parking. She was the only one there, so I asked her if I could pay on my way out since I’d forgotten my ticket. Even as I said it, I thought: Does she work here? Why am I asking her?! As it turned out, she volunteers at the hospital.

We got on the elevator. I pushed my floor, and she said, “Oh, me too.” In a place that big, with that many floors.

At the top, standing there looking for our cars, she turned to me with a warm smile and asked, “Can I tell you something?”

It didn’t seem odd. Not for a second.

Today was her six-year anniversary of open-heart surgery. She now walks alongside patients on their own journeys, and she’s the 2026 Allina Volunteer of the Year. She’d spotted my wristband and knew I was a patient.

We agreed the universe gives us what we need, and today we needed each other. We connected on LinkedIn, and we hugged, heart to heart.

Meghan Holmes is my new friend, and she’ll be a guest on The View in Your Mirror.

I’ve never had trouble starting a conversation, but I used to wonder if I was bothering people or wasting their time. Having the podcast has quieted that voice, and it’s been a gift that keeps giving. It’s a chance for listeners to realize they’re not alone. It doesn’t change our uniqueness; it connects us in ways we don’t think about.

We get many requests from people who want to be on the show. We’re happy that our guests come from organic conversations, from friends who value what we do, and apparently now from elevators!

But you don’t need a podcast to foster connection. Keep your head up. I hope you discover your extraordinary heart-to-heart moment in the middle of your ordinary day.

Who’s taught you something you still carry with you?
What if a podcast could feel like one big mentorship?

@katieharms put it this way: “It’s one giant big mentorship.”

In S11 E5, Katie, @lisarubin_wardrobeconsulting and @michberthiaume share stories about the people who guided them, the lessons that stayed with them, and the importance of passing that wisdom along.

Who’s a mentor you’re grateful for? Share their name or a lesson they taught you in the comments—and follow along for more conversations.

Two strangers. Two gifts. One week.

Yesterday felt like the first true day of fall. Crisp air, bright sun. I was headed into a doctor’s appointment to get some stitches out, nothing dramatic, when I noticed a woman about 50 feet ahead of me in the parking lot.

She stopped. Bent down. Gently cupped a shrub rose in her hands and breathed it in.

She had literally stopped to smell the roses.

No one else was around. She didn’t know I was behind her. It was one of the purest moments I’ve witnessed in a long time.

My first thought? I didn’t know those had a smell. Which is a little sad. I’ve walked past shrub roses my whole life. They’re the quiet workhorses of the rose world, lining the walkways of our lives, and I’d never once stopped.

I caught up with her at the elevator and asked, “Do they have a smell?”

She lit up. “YES! The most beautiful earthy rose smell.”

I told her what a gift it was to witness that little moment. She told me I’d just given her one back.

It reminded me of something that happened downtown a few days earlier.

I was walking to an appointment near the Lumber Exchange when a man who appeared to be unhoused called out, “I love your hair!” I thanked him. He walked alongside me, still complimenting, and I gave my usual quip about how much money I save on color. (Geez, Katie.) At the light, he asked if I could spare some money.

“I’m sorry, not today, buddy.”

His answer: “It’s okay. Thank you for treating me like a human being.”

I’ve sat with that for days. Should I have given him something? I was running late, didn’t want my wallet out on the street, didn’t know if I had small bills. A dozen thoughts in a few seconds.

But I don’t think the money was what he was thanking me for. For a brief moment, he felt seen.

Both of these people have stayed with me. One gave me a gift. One reminded me I’d given one.

We can’t move through this world without leaving some kind of mark on each other. And more often than not, it’s the quiet, simple things that leave the deepest ones.

So if you’d care to share a small moment here, I’d consider it a gift. 🌹 by @katieharms

#tellingonmyselfday 💩 file this under easily avoidable. Thankfully I’m across the street from my garage so the extra trip for the doggie bag -biodegradable of course- did not take long but had I simply taken 30 extra seconds to fill it when I last used it, I’d have saved 3 minutes! It all adds up. Perhaps I can blame my hubby? 🤔😂 Happy Monday Y’all! by @katieharms

Multiple reasons to cheer. @lovbmn had their opening gathering and @april.ehrman and crew put together a beautiful event. So excited for #provolleyballMN and want everyone to win but mostly us fans who have been waiting a long time for this. @toridixon06 - yay! @sarah_wilhite yay! What fun it will be to watch you two back at Maturi. Yesterday was one of those busy days so ending it with this event was fun- even though I forgot to take a single photo besides Tori! 🏐💜. Still basking in the Gophers win over Michigan and the fact that we made it almost to the end of the game with the grandsons! by @katieharms

Wednesday wisdom:

Sometimes, it really is the little things.

A little mascara.
A swipe of lipstick.
And suddenly, you feel a little more put together, a little more confident, and ready to take on the day.

It’s not about changing who you are—it’s about giving yourself that little boost that changes how you show up.

Because when you feel good about your presentation, it can change your whole day.
