Concert Reflections: National Symphony Orchestra, June 2026

Kellen Gray on his NSO subscription classics debut 🎼:

“With every program you aim to create something special and lasting; but this recent program with the National Symphony Orchestra holds profound personal importance for me.

Beyond the NSO’s place amongst the pantheon of the nation’s ensembles, it is an organization that truly invested in my growth and has become a musical family. Through years of conducting community programs, invaluable mentorship from Music Director Gianandrea Noseda, shared ideas with the staff, and personal friendships, this organization has embraced me. To be entrusted with a subscription program, share the stage with musicians I so admire, and again collaborate with the incredible Michelle Cann, is an honor that is difficult to describe.

Also, the significance of this specific program at this specific moment of the NSO and Kennedy Center’s history, is also not lost on me. I don’t believe it to be accidental or incidental that Dvořák’s Suite in A major - a set of miniatures based on European folk dances - is named The American. I truly believe that even in 1894, Dvořák was making a statement about what it means to be American: all are welcome, and all have claim.”

Gershwin's "Catfish Row" and Dvořák's "American Suite" are two beautiful gems I'm excited to perform multiple times this season, including my subscription classics debut with the National Symphony Orchestra ( @natsymphonydc ), an organization and orchestra that has become another family in recent years.

Two works perfect to showcase the rarely-matched power and electricity of this incredible ensemble (@nso_musicians ).

Accompanying the two American classics are three world premieres - works by Catherine Elizabeth, Charles Lumar II, and a new Piano Concerto by the ever-inspiring Valerie Coleman (@valerie_coleman_music ) featuring the stellar Michelle Cann ( @michelleacann ).

TŌN welcomes guest conductor Kellen Gray, Associate Artist of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra (Glasgow, UK) and Artistic Director of the Lafayette Symphony Orchestra (Indiana, US) and violinist Melissa White, a first-prize laureate in the Sphinx Competition and a founding member of the Grammy-winning Harlem Quartet, for a concert highlighting the music of four celebrated American composers. Aaron Copland’s rhythmically intricate 1933 “Short Symphony” will be performed alongside two works by Black composers of the same generation. The soulful Violin Concerto No. 1 by Florence Price dates to 1939, but was never performed in the composer’s lifetime, having only been found in 2009 and premiered in 2018. William Grant Still’s optimistic Fourth Symphony, “Autochthonous”, imagines America as a place of ingenuity and inclusivity. Also on the program is the meditative recent work Hymn for Everyone by Jessie Montgomery, Performance Today’s 2025 Classical Woman of the Year.
