A huge well done to our young musicians at Big Noise Douglas who joined our friends at the Royal Scottish National Orchestra onstage last week for a special side-by-side performance of Leroy Anderson’s ‘The Syncopated Clock’ 🕰️ 🎶

After weeks of hard work and dedication, it was fantastic to see them confidently take their places on the big stage at Caird Hall alongside the national orchestra.

Enjoy this behind the scenes look at the pre-concert rehearsal. We couldn’t be prouder! 🫶

With our Leader Maya Iwabuchi stepping in this week to perform Three Pieces from Schindler's List alongside music by Copland, Still and Bernstein's Symphonic Dances, it was a fabulous start to our Dundee Season ✨

🌟 Meet KELLEN GRAY, One of our Six Music Director Finalists 🌟
.
American conductor Kellen Gray has earned a reputation as a versatile and imaginative artist, celebrated for his diverse array of traditional and experimental programming, thrilling performances, and provocative multimedia concert experience curation. He is one of the foremost experts and interpreters of the music of African-diasporic composers, for whom he is a passionate advocate and champion.
.
Born and raised in Rock Hill, South Carolina, Gray’s early professional life began as an orchestral violinist before turning his full-time attention to conducting. Since the end of 2023, he serves as Associate Artist of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra: a newly created role that sees him conduct, curate, and present programs right across the RSNO’s series offerings. Since September 2024, Gray is also Conductor & Artistic Director of the Lafayette Symphony Orchestra (IN, USA), where he is leading dynamic artistic programming and community enrichment activities for the city of Lafayette.
.
Recent and forthcoming guest conducting highlights include engagements with leading orchestras worldwide, such as the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Baltimore Symphony, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Cincinnati Symphony, BBC Philharmonic and BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Houston Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra (Washington D.C.), and Seattle Opera, amongst others.

ABOUT THE SEARCH PROCESS
We're seeking a leader who can build on our tradition of excellence while helping us reach new artistic heights. During 2027, audiences will have the unique opportunity to get to know each finalist as they conduct two concert programs and spend time throughout the community. These residencies will extend beyond the podium, allowing candidates to connect with musicians, patrons, donors, and community leaders. These experiences will help shape the Philharmonic’s future while giving the community an active role in getting to know the dynamic artists being considered for this important position.

What does beekeeping have to do with conducting?
More than you might think.

Just as a beehive is a superorganism capable of complete independence so is an orchestra; it’s a conductor’s job to make life easier for the orchestra just as a beekeeper does for a hive of bees.

We’re looking forward to welcoming @KellenGrayConductor to the UK next week as he makes his debut with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and BBC National Chorus of Wales.

On Sunday 5 July, at BBC Hoddinott Hall in Cardiff, Kellen conducts An American Soundscape: an all-American programme marking 250 years of American independence, with music by Copland, Barber, Bernstein, William Grant Still and a UK premiere of @ChristopherTinMusic’s Piano Concerto with soloist @LaraDownesMusic.

We could not be prouder to see him on the podium.
