📚 Vanilla, Grass, Almond
6 April – 28 June 2026 | Kendi Collection, Istanbul

Vanilla, Grass, Almond brings together 24 artists revisiting their previous publications and making contemporary interventions, transforming the book-object into a living form.

The exhibition takes its name from the vanilla, grass, and almond notes that emerge as paper, ink, and binding materials age. Referencing the concept of bibliosmia, these scents, developing and relating over time, are interpreted not only as a physical process but also as a reflection of the artists’ memories and experiences.

Vanilya, Çimen, Badem

6 Nisan – 28 Haziran 2026
Kendi Koleksiyonu

houses were rooms, i had forgotten, 2017
Edition of 500
11 × 15 cm, 20 pages

Produced on the occasion of the exhibition Driftwood, or how we surfaced through currents in Athens, houses were rooms, i had forgotten returns to an earlier installation not by reconstructing it, but by asking how memory can be revisited.

Rather than presenting memory as a coherent whole, Lara Ögel approaches it through fragments, textures, traces, and sensory associations. Structured around the form of a drawer—a space that conceals and reveals—the publication unfolds through layered compositions of fingers, paws, relief, void, fullness, and lavender, reflecting the fragmented yet vivid nature of remembering.

Yasemin Özcan

SGK, 2016
Edition of 3 + 1 AP

In SGK, Yasemin Özcan vacuum-seals the book Famous Poor Children (Meşhur Olan Fakir Çocuklar, Mehmet Aydın, 1967). Inside the sealed book is an A4 printout of the artist’s official social security retirement record, revealing missing pension contributions.

To access the document, the viewer must first break open the vacuum-sealed book. Through this simple gesture, Özcan invites us to confront the relationship between artistic production, labor, and precarity.

Thukral & Tagra

Weeping Farm, 2022
Hardcover, 275 pages

Weeping Farm reflects on the precarious realities of contemporary farming, addressing issues such as gender inequality, food insecurity, debt, privatization, and climate change. Bringing together nine exhibitions alongside participatory engagements, the publication interweaves Thukral & Tagra’s long-term interest in socio-economic structures with research, lexicon-building, and the metaphorical language of sports and play.

The book extends the artists’ ongoing practice, proposing play as a pedagogical tool to engage with the urgent social and ecological challenges of our time.

Sevil Tunaboylu

At the center of Sevil Tunaboylu’s artist book are visual and conceptual notes gathered from everyday life. Bringing together drawings, photographs, short texts, and fragments, the publication resists a linear narrative, instead opening a space to reflect on perception, memory, and our relationship with objects.

Described by the artist as “a document of a hand writing, drawing, and carving in a stream of consciousness against the speed of time,” the book becomes a record of attention—tracing the language of objects, belonging, and the subtle details that often go unnoticed.

Sena Başöz

Riverbed (Nehir Yatağı), 2021
12.5 × 18 cm, 128 pages
Edition of 300

Riverbed is based on interviews Sena Başöz conducted with migrants and archivists in Basel. Set against a fictional end-of-the-world scenario inspired by ongoing ecological and political crises, the publication uses the river as a metaphor for memory in constant flux, asking: “What would remain if the River Rhine stopped flowing? What would you want to keep?”

For Vanilla, Grass, Almond, the artist presents an intervention on Riverbed, extending the publication into the exhibition space and opening new ways of engaging with memory, loss, and preservation.

Metehan Özcan

Resimli Bilgi Ek (Illustrated Information – Appendix)
Karton Kitap × Metehan Özcan, 2019
16.5 × 23 cm, offset print
Edition of 500

Originally conceived as a collage series produced between 2012 and 2013, Resimli Bilgi takes its title from an old children’s encyclopedia. The alphabetical organization of the encyclopedia generated unexpected juxtapositions, becoming the starting point for a practice shaped by chance encounters between images.

In collaboration with the designers of Karton Kitap, photographs and illustrations from the original collages were fragmented, rearranged, and dispersed throughout the pages of the publication without a fixed sequence. Revisiting the book years later, Özcan introduced additional cuts and folds, further breaking apart the images and creating new chance compositions that echo the logic of the original collages.
