We know what we need to do, especially those of us in the citadels and states where the worst of the Republicans’ impulses will be held at bay. The old way is broken. Frankly, it needed to break. Democrats had three chances (2016, 2020, 2024) to meet the moment, but clung too tightly to the system that made them so comfortable. I completely disagree with the GOP’s diagnosis. It’s an old, tired argument, preying on the insidious plagues we’ve long incubated—but it still works, just the same.

Instead, we’ll suffer through what history has laid before us, because even the journey from our eyes to the ground was too far for American foresight.

Stay safe and give your self grace, beautiful people.

The best part of #2024 was easily the people who continue to pour their love, time, knowledge, and — most of all — patience into me. I am blessed in spite of myself. #nye #friendsandfamily #2025 by @kgborland

If I’m honest, I am not sad to see #2024 go. It was a challenging year. I’ve had to choose growth multiple times when the call of inertia’s void was at its loudest. I’m proud of myself for leaning into my intentions and now it’s time to hold myself accountable. Which mostly means I need to get my ass back to the gym, write every day, and not skip my cooking class in January just because numbing out is easier. Here’s to another go around the sun with Gaia and all you beautiful people. 🥂 #nye #intentionsetting #accountability #2025 by @kgborland

I realized a while ago that I never properly posted about RENAISSANCE last year. I have a bad habit of documenting on my story and then never following up to post it on my page. After a certain amount of time passed, I decided to wait until the one year anniversary. Today, August 30.

RENAISSANCE came at such a perfect time for me. It wove together so many threads of my life into a beautiful jubilee. I felt honored and privileged to experience @beyonce’s joyous triumph firsthand.

It is not an exaggeration to say that night in Levi’s Stadium will always be one of the best experiences of my life. I find myself saying more often than I care to admit that I wish I could go back and experience it again. When Spotify Wrapped comes around this year, RENAISSANCE may very likely be my most listened to album for a third year in a row.

There is a serious argument to be made for the cathartic role this album, this concert and Beyoncé’s artistry as whole played in transitioning me fully out of the pandemic. Helping me process that it was not only alright to feel okay, but it was essential to revel in our joy, to celebrate life and the heroes within our communities who made it all possible.

It was a renewal in every sense of the word.

The holidays were so wonderful this year. It was great to see family and to meet our newest addition, Mr. Cade Nesmith! The urge to spoil this child is so strong and I don’t intend to fight the urge that hard, haha. After all, what is a Guncle for?! Here’s to carrying the momentum from 2023 into 2024. #family #guncle #holidays #holidayseason #lgbtq #uncle #2023 taken in Home Sweet Home by @kgborland

The enemies of the LGBTQ+ community are more energized than ever. They’ll kill Queer people for dancing in a gas station parking lot in NYC and they’ll kill our allies for flying Pride flags outside their businesses in California. They want us to feel as if there is nowhere we are safe from their hatred.

I say all of that because the level of animosity and violence we’ve seen directed at the LGBTQ+ community in 2023 is only the beginning of the vitriol the Republicans will stir up in 2024. They are determined to keep trans people and the Queer community as a whole in the center of the national debate for the future of our country.

Prepare yourself emotionally, mentally and spiritually for the onslaught. It will be overwhelming so foster a supportive community and determine your personal boundaries for engagement in the coming months. Following the news this summer came close to swallowing me up, but allowing myself to lean on and indulge in my community allowed me to catch my breathe. Stay informed, but check out whenever you need a break and then get back in the ring when you’re ready. It’ll take us all at our best to withstand the Republican assault next year. (Link in bio.)

Yes, I’m over a week late in discussing the third installment of HBO’s latest monster hit, but “Long, Long Time” deserves all the buzz it’s generated. It was legitimately one of the best episodes of television I’ve ever seen and the overwhelming amount of people who watched it agree.

What makes this episode of prestige TV relevant to Third Cultured is that, unfortunately, the most joyless people on the internet – those that cry about “wokeness” whenever they see a person of color or a Queer person in any medium (as if we didn’t exist in real life…) – have made it their latest mob vendetta. Why? Because “Long, Long Time” centers on a gay couple in an almost hour-and-a-half-long episode showcasing the way humanity clings to life, love, and longing even in the midst of a fungi-induced apocalypse.

On January 3, 2023 – Kenyan LGBTQ+ activist and fashionista Edwin Kiprotich Chiloba, 25, was found dead in western Kenya’s Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County.

His body was stuffed into a metal box with obvious signs of torture, including strangulation. The box was found by a motorcycle taxi driver who reported seeing a vehicle with no license plates dump the trunk on the side of the road.

The Kenyan LGBTQ+ community routinely raises their concerns about rampant violence and discrimination, including 25-year-old Sheila Adhiambo Lumumba, a nonbinary lesbian who was found raped and murdered in their room in central Kenya’s Nyeri county last April.

However, as one of the 68 countries where homosexual relations are illegal – in Kenya’s case due to British colonial-era laws where penalties can include imprisonment of up to 14 years – their pleas are often ignored by Kenyan officials and society. Kenya’s president has gone so far as to say that gay rights are a “non-issue” in the country.

Thank you to everyone who helped make 2022 one for the books! I’m going into the new year with one word in mind: “intention.” I’m going to build on the strides I made this year and push myself to continue to show up for those I love and myself. (Not to mention remember to actually post my adventures and memories outside of Stories, haha.) Here’s to 2023! May I be open to all the joy, love and opportunities the Universe has prepared for me. #2022 #2023 #Friends #Growth #Intention #Love #NewYear by @kgborland
