The Holy Ghost Lives in Her Laugh
Darius Phelps

Multimorbid

I'm incredibly proud to have played a part in bringing both of these books to fruition. A devotional to the imperfect mother & disabled poems that force eyes on the real. Phelps & Wood give us empathy in action—the true work of kith.

         -   Pond Bitch

It's 2004 and 2024 and we're all  "at the circus, for some reason".  In Mall Water, Jaco delves into the hyper self-awareness of existance. It's the stress, it's nascent adulthood, it's just that one hallway and you can avoid it. It's the jeans, but it isn't. You're 17, 20, 24 and washed in the worst kind of lighting. You're alive and real and want people to want you and all of it is the worst kind of embarrassing. You fear the most graphic of tees could not save you, redress facing sideways to save yourself the reflection as you fumble the locks on your door.

I loved your

Janakiraman’s skill lies in distillation, in breath catching pivots hewn down to the spare. We are in every room standing shoulder to shoulder, “feet on the mattress’ edge,” the action preceding, our breath in the air. Desire moves through these poems as a restless wanting: for bodies, for language that “slick-slack-slur[s],” for intimacy, for a new childhood, for what might still become possible. These poems want and want, and in that wanting, they recognize a core disappointment: the quiet sadness of a life imagined as another. Bodies in Phototaxis mines past and present, unveiling a sun-soaked and grieving trans Tamil now.

Advance Praise for Bodies in Phototaxis:

R. Janakiraman’s collection wrestles with what it means to persevere through our internal strife. With each singing and passion-brimmed poem, Bodies in Phototaxis is a collection of pure energy: epitomizing gender, sexuality, race, and history, Janakiraman launches the reader into a trance of raw devotion. Their collection serves as an almanac for teenage warfare, and there is no poem that does not fulfill the demand of looking into yourself and moving away—or towards—the light. Everything begs to rebel and secede at once. Everything in Bodies in Phototaxis is “splashing in this pool of love”. But as all prodigies do, Janakiraman acknowledges that this love will haunt the page, slowly transfiguring into a presence that follows the reader homeward. This is a collection that recognizes the religions that govern us. This is a collection for the keepsakes we want unearthed. This is a collection that knows how to love and lose.
— Jaiden Geolingo, author of How to Migrate Ghosts

In Body, Dissected Ivi Hua roughs out our edges, the points at which the body feels most raw and real. In transition, in the hands of another, in a bright patch of sunlight that highlights a scar. Vivid and drenched in the language of longing, this collection will be familiar to anyone whose sense of settled in their own skin came on fitful and slow. Hua cries out to those who 'kept our pain locked away and secluded, coating the agony in luster,  held knives to our lips' and offers less answer than voice to the choir. I'm here and you've been here, it's time we got out.

"The State of Israel is founded on mythology, and a myth is an incredibly powerful thing...the myths we tell about ourselves, about our communities, and about others, have the capacity to give life or to take it..."

.

In ...AND THIS WOULD BE MOSHIACH, Leo Rodriguez's follow-up to ERETZ: JEWISH POEMS FOR PALESTINE, the author reflects on one year bearing witness to, and organizing against, Israel's genocide in Gaza. Through poems, essays, and a sprinkling of midrash, Rodriguez weaves a path that stretches back to the origins of Zionism, through their own complex religious and political journey, into the present-day horrors of the Israeli occupation. They wrestle with their place in the ethnoreligious hierarchy of America, explore grief and activism as spiritual pathways, and offer a vision of the future defined by interfaith solidarity. "I hope," Rodriguez writes, "to peel away the destructive false narratives that have been told to us about Israel, about Jews, about Palestinians...I am an anti-Zionist Jew. We are not a myth. A Judaism free of Zionism, free of Israel, is not a myth. Jewish-Muslim solidarity and love is not a myth."

Like scabs have no feeling
But cover the skin-to-be

It’s how this person must always
Be incapable try to make dinner
Time this normality

In Holds Up When Shattered, Andrew writes into the breaking that comes with adulthood, the hard rush of insecurity and disorientation that fills in the corners when we leave child behind. These are poems of love, strength, a search and tentative finding of self. Andrew’s eye for beauty and hope in all the small moments guides us through the turmoil of motherhood, marriage, and the building of home.

“You’re an animal. We’re all animals. Even you, son.”

Lewis has lost his dog Wolfie, his best friend in the world. Wearing her tag on a chain around his neck, Lewis is headed to the Painted Rocks National Lakeshore for a weekend of backpacking with three rowdy, aspiring Eagle Scouts and their Scoutmaster Ben, a struggling alcoholic. To survive the weekend, and the untethered hostility of Ben’s closeted son, Rhys, Lewis will have to hold onto his memories of Wolfie as tight as he can.

“Caught in that adolescent space between erotica and pain, the numb lip and the fist, we encounter a misfit troop of Scouts plunging with all their baggage into the scrub of Michigan's lakeside Upper Peninsula.”
 - Colin Gee, founder and editor of The Gorko Gazette

“Painted Rocks lays bare the rituals of masculinity that corrupt us, kill us, and keep us apart. Wilson's stunningly brutal prose is both gut-punch and heartstring-tug—the blood-suckle of mosquitos, the impact of fists on flesh, the dead weight of unrealized desire.”
 - K. Christopherson, author of Beast Country

“Painted Rocks is as brutal and sensitive as an adolescent boy's heart tuned to the erotic space where attraction and repulsion form the self. A tense and sensuous debut that shivers with subtle weirdness. Parker's prose flexes and relaxes on the page, blurring the boundaries between bodies, both human and nonhuman, entangling humans with the body of the land as it all competes for blood and love.”
 - Kyle E. Miller, author of the forthcoming novel, The Idiot's Garden
