Happy 4th Birthday @sessionclimbing!

10.5 years ago, I sent the first inquiry email about the property that would eventually become home to Session.

8 years ago, I flew to @walltopia headquarters in Bulgaria to design the walls in person using VR. Pretty sure they thought I was crazy.

5.5 years ago, we officially broke ground and started a year and half construction project. I’ll cherish those daily site visits watching it all come together.

And 4 years ago the dream became yours for the community to fill, shape, enjoy, and breathe life into. We just built the home. I’m endlessly grateful to all our staff and members who have brought to life our mission of “time well spent.” Can’t wait to celebrate with everyone today! by @kjorgeson

Skin’s wrecked. But the crux doesn’t care. Tape up, breathe deep, go again.

Kevin Jorgeson @kjorgeson showed remarkable grit on his Dawn Wall battle to send every pitch alongside Tommy Caldwell @tommycaldwell. For a climber, working with so much tape on your fingers while trying to grab the tiniest holds on the Dawn Wall might be akin to trying to win a stage of the Tour de France with a flat tire.

The tape helped Kevin pull through, but more than anything, I think it was just his sheer force of will, along with the encouragement of seemingly the whole world watching, that got him to the top. Easily one of the more remarkable moments in climbing that I’ve witnessed!

Dec 14 5pm:

We’re throwing a pre-release PARTY + FUNDRAISER at the @arlenefranciscenter in #SantaRosa with LIVE MUSIC from @sol.horizon and @gillbrothersband

The ALL AGES EVENT is raising funds for the last of our editing needs and for hiring the incredible @cleod9music to write a custom score for the film.

There will be all sorts of ways to participate and donate, including just your attendance (a substantial portion of the ticket and bar sales will go towards our $10K goal).

Just over 2 years ago @kjorgeson and @kirkkeelerphotography approached me with a pretty radical idea: Kirk had recently been diagnosed with stage-4 colon cancer and was teaming up with Kevin to climb #HalfDome in an effort to raise awareness about preventative screening and they wanted me to help tell that story through a #documentary film.

Earlier this year Kirk and Kevin completed their climb. The effort drew a lot of attention and press - and as an extension, the film received initial funding from our now Executive Producer, @cancerchampionsorg.

Kirk spearheaded this whole mission and film because he “doesn’t want anyone to go through what [he’s] had to go through” This film is like a megaphone for the critical messaging that he and organizations like @colorectalcanceralliance are trying to spread. Colon cancer is on the rise in our country and the best thing you can do is #getscreenedearly because #TomorrowCantWait.

Today I am heading up to Yosemite with my son Alec to watch a true Cancer Champion, Kirk, free climb Half Dome with renowned climber Kevin Jorgeson. Kirk’s goal is to spread the importance of early screening for colon cancer, as it is the cancer he is battling (and among the fastest-growing types of cancer among young people today). I have shared Kirk’s story with so many of you because he has had such a profound impact on me personally, as well as the direction of Cancer Champions as an organization. His sense of purpose and motivation are unparalleled and he has made a real difference in my life.

What I have not shared is that Yosemite was my mom’s favorite place. It’s where she spent her honeymoon. I was on a hike with Dave, Alec, Emma, Ian, and Maya (in a pack) when cancer took my mom from us. I’m not sure if I would call it full circle, but I can’t help but wonder if my mom somehow connected me with Kirk to get me back to her favorite place for the first time since she passed.

Through my mom‘s journey and now Kirk’s, I have a clearer understanding of the importance of purpose and goals. I am honored that I get to be a part of Kirk’s journey and life, and help him with the goal of making sure everyone, no matter how healthy they are, understands the importance of getting screened.

@kirkkeelerphotography is planning to climb Half Dome, and this revolution will be televised. The plan is to film a documentary of the process, but the financials of the situation still need to be figured out. We are spreading the word far and wide but we could always use some help. Check out this incredible teaser that @studioiverson has put together and we dare you to not be inspired. @kjorgeson is along for the ride and so is @cancerchampionsorg - how about you?

Big News – Kevin Jorgeson is joining Bouldering Project to ensure our gyms offer the best experience possible, including everything from climbing and routesetting to fitness, yoga, programming, events, and community spaces.

In 2015, Kevin and Tommy Caldwell’s ascent of Yosemite’s Dawn Wall brought a global spotlight to our sport and through his role as a professional athlete Kevin has been the consummate ambassador for climbing. While he’s known for establishing the world’s hardest big wall, his heart has been in the climbing gym.

Here’s what @kjorgeson has to say:

“At nine years old, I walked into the grand opening of Santa Rosa’s first climbing gym. In 1995, it was amongst just a handful of gyms in California. I didn’t excel at climbing at first, but rather grew to it and with it. By 12, I worked there in exchange for Snickers Bars and free membership because I was too young for formal employment. I was a gym rat. It defined my adolescent day to day, my friendships and dreams. Through the years, I’ve filled every imaginable role required to operate a climbing gym. I’ve been a route setter, coach, builder, founder, leader and yes, I even cleaned the toilets. That gym and community provided the onramp into a professional career that carried me across the globe. In many ways, I’m still a gym rat, in love with the sport and its potential to make a lasting impact on lives the way it did for me. I’m honored to be joining the Bouldering Project.”
