We didn’t plan on having cows…

We just wanted to know where our food comes from.

That curiosity turned into chickens… bees… rabbits… pigs… geese… guinea fowl… turkeys.

Every animal has taught us something.
Some lessons have been easier than others.

🐄 Now we’ve added cows.
And we truly have no idea what they’re about to teach us.

❤️ But that’s the part we love.

The homestead keeps growing.
And so do we. 🏠 by @kummerhomestead

This content is purely educational and shows the real process of raising and processing poultry for personal consumption.

It is not intended to disrespect anyone or the animals.

Yes, our daughter will chew on a chicken leg while telling us the chickens can’t go…

She’s not confused about why we raise animals for food. She loves her ground beef, scrambled eggs and pork. The hard part is letting go of the ones she’s cared for.

Our biggest mistake was the turkeys. Dad said yes to keeping a couple for breeding. Then we decided all of them had to go, and it turned into a big drama, because she’d been told something different.

What helps us now: remind them at every step what each animal is for and why, so the day never comes as a surprise.

Do your kids get attached to livestock?

Life’s been busy lately, but the good kind of busy!

We just launched the new MK Supplements Beef Protein, and Michael’s been testing out every new gadget he can get his hands on. Never a dull moment around here.

Our son started soccer, and watching him play has been one of our favorite things this season.

And of course Michael hasn’t missed a single day checking on the cows. That’s just not up for debate around here.

We use Superb jars and lids for all our canning. The seals are consistent and they hold up batch after batch — that matters when you’re putting up food you’re counting on months from now.

Your weeds are telling you something. 🌿

Swipe through 15 common pasture plants and the clues they leave. Confirm with a soil test before adding lime or fertilizer.

Save this for your next pasture walk.
