Today you would have turned 13 years old. Our first born son who made us parents, becoming our first child to enter teenage years.

This year I’ve been anticipating your birthday. My mind has drifted off into a loop of wondering how tall you’d be, how your voice would be changing, whether you’d still like singing and whether you’d still be a big mama’s boy. Weirdly enough I still felt the nerves and jitters just thinking about the thought of you heading off to college. And as I’ve bumped into kids who were in your class at school over these last few months, seeing them with their parents and siblings…knowing they’d soon be feeling and experiencing those things together…I can’t help but feel 🥺

So today is a little hard to celebrate, because it also serves as a reminder that you’re no longer here with us. So I’m planning to take some time out to bake you a cake, as I do for all you kids…and spend that time thinking of you, talking to you and doing my best to cherish every memory I have of you Lias. You always were so special to me my son and you still are.

I hope you hear every conversation your siblings have about you often, even little Ethan who never got to meet you - and all your family.

We love you very much son and miss you so so so much.

Tomorrow you would have been 12.

These last few weeks have been full on. Flying overseas, losing another family member and shifting house has kept me busy. But even with the busyness you’ve constantly been on my mind. Thinking about your birthday coming up. How I wish you were here to fuss over and celebrate. And I’m sure people would think, “it’s been a long time…surely it’s easier now?”

But it’s still not easy lieing about Judah being our eldest when asked. It’s still not easy telling people how many kids you have when you always leave one out because you don’t want to make it uncomfortable for others. It’s still not easy looking at our family and seeing that gap you were meant to occupy. And it’s still not easy celebrating these days without you here.

I miss you like you wouldn’t believe my son. We kept your picture on the wall right until we handed over the keys because where ever we go…you go with us.

The day that forever changed our lives.

I’ve been running a bit, from a vivid dream I was given after Lias passed. To create something that would detail our journey of child loss. That it might be something another parent, or any one grieving, can hold on to. I remember walking through it in the initial stages and feeling completely alone.

I’ve been putting it off…”I’ll do it when we have money…I need to get everything right, it has to be perfect…” but I also ran from it because it was hard to face. But this year, I’m committing to starting and finishing it. And to commit to it, me and Judah created this short part of the story…putting it out into the world as a commitment to finish.

Judah filmed all the parts on my iPhone, and I edited it on there too…so it has its limitations. This isn’t the start of the project, more me making a commitment to finally doing it. But it was another special part of our healing journey…doing it together.

We miss you so much Lias! And I can’t wait to start and finish this project for you. Love you my son ❤️

Judah has been selected for the Waikato BBall U16 Australian BBall Cup - Koru Tour 10-17 January 2027 in Albury Wodonga, Australia.

The fees required covers flights, travel in Australia, accommodation & food, team costs & tournament fees. The full cost comes in at $4000 😳😅

The ‘Got Your Back’ fundraiser is pretty simple…

💰 Each spot is $50

Judah only started basketball last year. His first team environment was at the end of last year, representing Māori reps. Since then, we’ve loved watching his confidence, love for the game and skill on the court grow.

This year was his first year playing rep ball, and we were so proud when his first trials landed him in the second-highest rep team in Tauranga 🙌

Since then, he’s had the opportunity to be selected for 5 other teams outside of his rep team, which has been pretty cool to watch.

One of those opportunities is with Waikato Basketball, where he has been selected to play in the Australian Junior Bball Cup - Koru Tour ‘27! 🇦🇺🏀

Jude turns 13 this month, but he’ll be playing in the U16 div 😮‍💨🔥 and from what we’ve heard, it’s going to be a tough week of basketball!

It’s a huge opportunity for him and a big commitment for our family. Trainings are held in Hamilton, and the cost of travelling to Australia adds up quickly.

Can’t believe we now have a teenager in the house 🥹

13 today and it feels like only yesterday we were putting him to sleep as a new born in a drawer from Becs parents bedroom 😂 I know it’s dumb, he’s not on any social media channels so he won’t see this lol but we’re so proud of the young man he is becoming. So just a boast post coz we think he’s pretty special!
