‘Layers of Bitumen and Starch’

My BA graduate project explored my Saudi Arabian and Filipino heritage through unconventional materials: bitumen and corn starch. I aimed to portray their dual nature- how their humble origins contrast with the luxury they can provide. This project emphasised the importance of understanding materials’ impact on our cultural narratives and environmental awareness.

By exhaust dyeing with bitumen, I address waste material management in Saudi Arabia whilst offering a lifeline to traditional Filipino piña fabric with corn starch on silk.

Screen printed corn starch on silk, layered on top of bitumen printed silk, casting a patterned shadow in response to light

Wall-Hanging Collaboration, Patis Tesoro and Liela Alsugair

Dyed abacá, upcycled and scrap fabric, appliqué, machine and hand embroidery, sequins and found buttons.

Approx. 180 hours.

Looking back at one of the projects I’m really proud to have been part of during my time in the Philippines.

Many native textiles in the Philippines are at risk of being lost as traditional processes like fibre extraction and weaving become less supported and are now carried on by fewer artisans.
This piece reimagines abacá, exploring how the material can feel just as relevant today, showing its beauty in a different light and reminding people of what is at risk of being lost.

This is a project that means a lot to me— the time put into it and the relationships I’ve made. I was in a creative playground all thanks to Patis, an incredible mentor and friend. My time with her really showed me the power of community and story. I learnt so much from and about these women, sitting side by side stitching, listening and sharing stories, shaping this work as much as the materials themselves.

A huge thank you to @patistesoro, @nibspobs1, Madonna, and the artisans— especially Sheryl and Melinda. taken in Philippines by @l.alsugair

An alternative to piña: corn starch on silk.

It showcases the transformative potential of the material's inherent nature, highlighting how "low-tech" processes can produce dynamic, interactive results without reliance on advanced technologies.

My graduate project explores my Saudi Arabian and Filipino heritage using unconventional materials: bitumen and corn starch. It evolves around my design philosophy of letting materials dictate design through their inherent potential whilst revealing their roles in shaping our cultural & environmental futures.
