‘Layers of bitumen and starch’

I have dedicated this project to uniting the two cultures I come from, Saudi Arabia and the Philippines, through a materials lens: bitumen and corn starch. This exploration aims to start a conversation on the dualities between the original state of my materials used, compared to the luxuries and different forms of beauty it is able to give us, encouraging us to reflect on our responsibility and influence in how we use and appreciate such materials today. By allowing bitumen and corn starch to dictate design, I created a third space where I represent the disharmony and harmony of how this is done, through the idea of permeance and impermanence, conceal and reveal. I chose to present my work through the lens of the Filipino 'Terno' as integrating this cultural attire into my project highlights the importance of acknowledging and respecting the profound influence materials have on our cultural narratives- the direct relationship we have with what we exploit, and how this exchange equally affects one another.

PRINT . WEAVE . D&M PROJECT

 ‘From Two lands to One’

How does one work the land? I aimed to answer this by merging the different approaches from the two cultures I come from, Saudi Arabia and Philippines. Using materiality to explore conflicting narratives and imagery found in the oil and agriculture industries, I aimed to challenge what ‘land’ means, by representing it through print and weave, where both can live in harmony as snapshots in time. Finding a middle ground to represent both, through found material and upcycling, I explored how being surrounded by two different lands has made me feel inadequate to understand either of them. Therefore, I decided to reinvent and make one recognizable to me: my own celebration and ode to the two lands I am from, forming one.
