Soo neat to see a recent digital art commission featured in @nytimes article on the reopening of Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival’s Doris Duke Theatre, rebuilt as a hub for dance and technology. @jacobspillow

Author @clthomps spoke with Pamela Tatge about the theatre’s tech-forward vision and the opening week events, including Dancing the Algorithm, curated by the brilliant @khfdance , which showcases artists critically engaging with the aesthetics, politics, and possibilities of movement in an era increasingly shaped by algorithms and artificial intelligence.

It was incredibly meaningful to be part of the opening week celebration, and to share the space with artists whose work continues to inspire and expand the evolving boundaries of dance, including: @helloandrewjs @xin_ying_dance , @alanwinslow , @myles_avery and @kateladenheim , @memo_akten & @katiepeytonhofstadter ; @classicshimmy , @soundformovement @mingyong_art ; Kianí Del Valle & Hamill Industries; @entroplay ; Nora Gibson; @davidwallacehaskins ; @kambarayayoi @operator_______ ; @db.sierra ; @abodycam , and others!

Thank you to @khfdance for the opportunity and @soundformovement for the music track to support the piece so beautifully. 🤍 by @l.bedal

In 2024, our design team at Archetype (@archetype_ai) built a series of demos to showcase early signals of what our AI model can do. This one demonstrates real-time translation of sensor data into natural language descriptions.
The demo starts with an IMU sensor placed inside a package. Using an interface, you can adjust the model's "focus" to steer its output toward different goals, in this case, either tracking transit status or detecting package mishandling. Although deceptively simple, “underneath the hood” is a series of carefully written prompts that provide context for the data and the tone and format of the output.
From these demos, you can imagine several use cases, such as continuous monitoring of fragile shipments 🚚. Excited to share other demos we’ve been working on! #foundationmodels #sensors #multimodal by @l.bedal

About CodeMoves
CodeMoves is an initiative of @themovementproject that weaves technology into creative practice. Over the past 18 months, Elyse Morckel, Lauren Bedal, Miryam Gabrielle, and Varsha Iyengar built a suite of hybrid tools for choreographers without technical backgrounds, in collaboration with @spatialpixel, that were used from rehearsal to performance. CodeMoves is a 2024 Knight New Work grantee.

Facilitators
Lauren Bedal - @l.bedal is an LA-based media artist, choreographer and thought leader in human computer interaction. With over 13 years in the tech industry, her work uses computer vision, datasets, and artificial intelligence to explore and question how machines interpret and generate human movement.

Varsha Iyengar - @framingmovessf is a movement practitioner and creative technologist based in San Francisco and Bangalore. Trained in Bharatanatyam and contemporary dance, she creates immersive performance environments with real-time generative visuals and motion capture.

@fastcompany placed @archetype_ai on its Next Big Things in Tech list for 2026. 🙌🏼 in their words:

“Large language models may know a lot, but because they have been trained on text and images. By contrast, Archetype’s Newton foundation model can interpret data from cameras, lidar, radar, inertial measurement units, and other sensors used in enterprise domains such as construction, logistics, manufacturing, and urban planning. Customers ranging from the city of Bellevue, Washington, to data services firm NTT Data to construction giant Kajima Corporation have adopted the model, which outperforms the major general-purpose LLMs on sensor-related tasks.”

Registration is now OPEN for the workshop Body, Space, Time” Movement and software with CodeMoves (SF/CHI) at ELASTIC ARTS @elasticarts @framingmovessf @miryam.gabrielle @eamorck @l.bedal

October 17th, 2-4pm @ Elastic Arts in Logan Square

This workshop explores how software built in a community setting can support and deepen the choreographic process. Designed for movement artists, this workshop will allow participants to use, move with, and iterate on custom-built software tools (e.g. video mixing, spatial interactions) to help them deepen their inquiry on a topic of choice, while understanding their own interests and boundaries around technology use in their practice. We will end in a demonstration of explorations and community discussion. No coding, tech, or movement experience necessary.

This workshop is an extension of the CodeMoves initiative by The Movement Project, aimed at weaving technology into the creative practice. (learn more here: **https://www.codemoves.studio/**) CodeMoves was selected as a 2024 Knight New Work grantee, an initiative of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation that supports artists and organizations in Akron, Miami, and Detroit who are using technology to innovate how art is created, shared, and experienced.

A wonderful project from @amandawllg at @umeainstituteofdesign on Choreographic Interfaces.

We move through and with our devices all day, yet most interfaces still ask the body to adapt to the technology rather than the other way around. She asks what changes when dancers and choreographic thinking are brought into the design process itself: interviews, autobiographical research, recurring workshops with professional dancers, and a series of prototypes, from video sketches to projected feedback on the living-room floor.

The outcome is a concept where household devices learn the “choreographies” that naturally form between people who live together, and a matrix for evaluating how open a choreographic interface is to personalisation. I especially appreciated her honesty about power: deciding what the “right” movement is also decides what is wrong, and that can exclude.

She builds on people who have shaped this space, including @sydneyskybetter , Thecla Schiphorst, Kristina Höök, Sarah Fdili Alaoui, Lise Amy Hansen and Andrew Morrison, and Jürgens, Correia and Masu’s survey of dance in HCI.

She also references the interview I did with Sydney Skybetter for Dance Magazine in 2020, citing the idea that interacting with digital information in 3D space shares its elements with choreography: interaction designers, like choreographers, need to understand the movement of the body, in space, over time. Seeing that line land in a new generation’s research is such a treat 🤍 by @l.bedal

Last month, I had the opportunity to guest lecture at @columbia university in Professor Violet Whitney’s #spatialcomputing course, where I spoke on natural user interfaces and embodied interaction design.

During the session, I shared some work from my time at Google’s Advanced Technology and Projects Group, where we designed and developed a set of spatial input primitives for the Google Home ecosystem. This work encompassed both implicit and explicit interactions, ranging from subtle micro-gestures to comprehensive full-body movements. #spatialcomputing #gestureinteractions #hci taken in Columbia University by @l.bedal

In April, I went up to @cacollegeofarts for their Graduate Admitted Day, joining a panel titled “The Future of Things: AI as a New Material for Design”, in conversation with Tim Belonax (Anthropic) @timbelonax @anthropicai , Thomas J. McLeish (CCA), Karl Willis (Autodesk) @autodesk and our brilliant moderators Elena Pacenti @pacentielena and Justin Lokitz.

We explored how AI isn’t just a tool but a material with its own behaviors, biases, and affordances. We talked about generative systems, physical AI, and the responsibility we hold as designers to shape how people experience emerging technologies.

A few takeaways:
→ The rise in multimodal AI models and how this opens new possibilities for interaction & input paradigms
→ How to foster a culture of experimentation around this new technological material
→ And the sheer ambiguity we’re navigating, as Thomas shared “We’re in the horseless carriage era of AI. We don’t know how to drive it yet. But like any transformative technology, we’ll figure it out by exploring its edges.”

Grateful to CCA for hosting such a rich and timely conversation.
