I’ve always believed that whatever you criticize whether good or bad grows. Criticizing evil without an alternative of good is doing it a Favour.

What ID Cabasa @idcabasa @coded_tunez_ shared yesterday is one truth I’ve always held dear, preached, and stood for over the years.

Even though his message was focused on creatives, it’s a truth that must be understood across every field of human endeavour, business, and matters of success generally.

‘Creative masturbation’, a phrase coined by ID, is the art you create just for your own enjoyment, the kind that doesn’t connect with or solve anyone’s problem. In his words, most creatives are guilty of this. Their passion only serves their own satisfaction. Art only becomes a business when it brings pleasure to others. This is why many artists struggle: they are too talented and passionate to connect with the regular human being.

Here’s a summary of his session.

* Passion drives, but purpose gives direction. Without purpose, passion can drive you into the ditch. This makes purpose rank higher than passion on the scale of importance.

* Passion may blind you to what people really need, but purpose will open your eyes to the problems your passion must solve. Your passion should not determine your purpose; your purpose should drive your passion.

* Life is in seasons, and transitions do happen. No matter how passionate you are, understand the season of your passion. This is a profound truth. Some seasons do end, making an area of passion irrelevant to your purpose.

* ID’s gradual transition from very active musicianship to people development and other areas of business is one example.

* Don’t get stuck with passion. Your transition should not depend on how much success you think you’ve had or haven’t had. It must be based on an understanding of seasons.

One major highlight of his session was when he said:

“I’m good at what I do, but I cannot compete with the current trend of music because I have moved on to other expressions of my purpose.”

That was a humbling statement that reflects someone who has truly understood the meaning of success.

So, your purpose should drive every decision in your life, not your feelings. Because if two are worse than one, then it's better to stay single.

A man or woman who is not purpose-driven is not ready to be married.

Leaders who crave external validation are not yet ready to lead.

A leader is ahead of the game. His task is to change others’ reality, not merely accept it. If he needs their validation before he can lead them, he is not ready to lead.

Validation must begin with the vision and conviction within. These form the foundation of the new reality the leader seeks to establish—a reality superimposed upon the present one.

Once leaders conceive a genuine vision, they must look inward to define it, then paint it outwardly for others to see. They must not seek outside validation for what they have already conceived within.

External feedback still matters, but only for refinement—not validation. It can sharpen the message, improve the strategy, and clarify what must be communicated. It must not determine whether the vision is worth pursuing.

The vision must inform the picture we paint; the picture outside must not determine the vision within.

One leadership lesson I’ve had to learn the hard way is finding the balance between living in my current reality and pursuing my vision.

As a person of faith, I am naturally future-oriented. I try to think ahead, see what is possible and position myself for the future. However, I sometimes find myself tempted to detach from my current reality because of where I believe I am going.

As leaders, one way we scale our efforts and organisations is by intentionally raising other leaders—creating opportunities for them to grow, take responsibility and lead—so that we can focus on more strategic work.

My frustration was that, because of my dream, I tended to overestimate people. I saw the leader they could become, even when they had not yet fully seen that potential in themselves. As a result, I held them accountable for a capacity they had not yet developed. I was living more in the idea than in the reality.

Growth and success come from having clear goals rooted in a compelling vision and knowing exactly what needs to be done to achieve them. But we must also be honest about where we are, the capacity of our teams and the resources available to us.

We can only take our next steps from where we are—not from where we imagine we are.

Now, I’m learning to “bi-locate”: to remain grounded in my current reality while staying connected to my vision, and to gradually close the gap with clarity and intention.

Faith sees the future, but never denies the facts.

Leaders must continue to see the future, but never deny their current reality.

If Nigeria is to experience real change, we must deliberately cultivate leaders, entrepreneurs and producers.

This is not primarily a political issue but a leadership one. Many of our problems persist because too few people are willing and capacitated to take responsibility, solve problems, build institutions and create value for others.

Leadership is not limited to political office. It is the willingness to confront problems, serve others, create where others complain and build where others merely consume. We must nurture this spirit in our homes, schools, workplaces, religious institutions and communities.

Nigeria’s population is growing faster than the economy’s capacity to generate sufficient income and opportunities. To close that gap, we need more than consumers of limited resources; we need entrepreneurs, producers, innovators and problem-solvers who can expand economic activity and create opportunities for others.

Our schools must do more than prepare young people to pass examinations or compete for scarce jobs. They must develop initiative, discipline, creativity, courage and the capacity to lead. Religious institutions must raise people who do not only pray for change but are prepared to become instruments of it.

Government must create an environment where entrepreneurs can start, survive, employ people and scale. But no government can build a great nation alone. Transformation occurs when citizens develop the character and capacity to take responsibility for their communities and future.

A young and growing population can become a tremendous economic advantage when guided by vision, discipline, enterprise and responsible leadership. Nigeria’s future depends not only on how many people we have, but on the quality of leaders, producers, creators and problem-solvers we cultivate.

Leaders must arise.
