I spent September and October at the @centerforbookarts with EJ Youcha, @pashariko_bookbinding, receiving a crash course in historical bookmaking.

This adventure resulted in a new work, “Portolan” a 17”x13” artist’s book composed of 224 embossed pages with graphite and color pencil.

Can’t wait to make another one!

A glimpse into the bookmaking studio this fall. I’m blind embossing and preparing each spread for a hand-bound artist book entitled “Portolan”.

After a summer filled with travel and exciting new projects, I’m very happy to be back in the studio in New York… Getting back to the slow, tactile processes of working with paper, and venturing into placing my previously wall-based prints into book form.

This summer I worked on the text for my new artist book “Sofia” forthcoming in 2027. The book will bring together original poetry in English, their Italian translations, and reproductions from my collages.

The Italian translations are being undertaken by Elena Arezio @italian_language_vacations. It is a revelation and joy to do this work together. This is the first time I have collaborated with a translator on my own work, and it has deepened my relationship to Italian as well as the nuances of my own language.

This Summer I was invited to be a writing resident at the co-sponsored Crit Lab @thecritlab & Casa della Letteratura, Residency for Contemporary Art @ruc_residency, in Cividate Comune.

I spent two gorgeous weeks writing at the foothills of the Alps in Val Camonica.

In June, I was an artist-in-residence at Progetto Pran’e Siddi with Director Dr. Emily Holt, her team, and a group of students-in-training, in the northern Campidano region of Sardinia.

Dr. Holt is an environmental archaeologist and archaeological scientist who directs an excavation inhabited by prehistoric communities beginning in the Neolithic period (ca. 4000–3200 BCE). Progetto Pran’e Siddi was formed to investigate Nuragic climate, environment, land use, and economic practices in the Siddi region. The group researches what kinds of pressures made the Nuragic people abandon their towers on the plateau.

As part of the residency, I conducted a silk-spinning workshop with the student group, and later with community members.

I deeply admire the generosity, good humor and tenacity of the entire team when faced with the challenges of the archaeological process. Chapeau!

Alongside my studio work, I’ve also been spending time learning modern Greek.

One of the main reasons is that I want to be able to read the poetry of Odysseus Elytis in the original. For years, I’ve worn a ring engraved with one of his epigraphs:

“Thus often when I am speaking of the sun a huge crimson rose gets tangled in my tongue. But it is not possible for me to be silent,” from his collection ‘Sun the First’.

Images from the studio last spring…

I moved into a new studio at EFA and it took awhile to settle in. I continued to work with the embossed prints from “Mother-tongue” but this time, incising them, opening them up, so they required more back-fill in the collage process.

Last February, I attended a paper-making workshop with Eduardo in San Agustín Etla, Oaxaca. We worked with cotton paper pulp and natural dyes. We also visited a local workshop to observe the process of making dye from cochineal, learning about this remarkable natural pigment and its long history of use in Oaxaca.

After a much-needed break from Instagram, I’m sharing a few images from my studio, taken exactly one year ago.

Featured here are details from my series “Mother-tongue” and “Where I Hoped Rock Would Be”

These works were made through a combination of embossing, drawing, printing, and stitching into cotton paper. Inspired by the encryption of ancient languages, they grapple with notions of erasure and memory.
