POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

“Adventures in Venice, Italy” has a new, slim, wood frame highlighting the many found papers I collaged while an artist in residence at the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica in the winter of 2023 for six amazing weeks. Many fond memories of this magical floating city and the friends I made. Shout out to the incredible Ristorante Levante which hosted my daughter’s 18th birthday. From the looks of the colorful wrappers, I ate a lot of yummy candy too!

For the past two weeks, I have had the honor and privilege of being an artist in residence at @ruc_residency! This has been an absolutely life-changing experience, pushing me to explore creative and material limits with a truly breathtaking backdrop. From experimenting with coffee as paint (when in Italy!) to integrating poetry and drawing and sewing into a single piece, this residency has truly shaped me into a more complete artist and person. Plus, I had some wonderful company in the form of my fellow artists and friends!

I have been thinking a lot about why we create—likeness, emotion, necessity—and what it means to make “good” art. It is always difficult not to judge against this standard of aesthetics, and traveling around Florence last month learning by example from “The Masters” definitely leaves something to be desired in my own creative process. However, I have never felt so creatively free as I have experimenting, attempting, failing, and possibly succeeding as I have during this residency: a quality which I hope to carry with me in my daily life and artistic pursuits moving forward. Rest assured that there will definitely be more to come with this collection of works!

In short, please enjoy the chaotically wonderful results of yielding to the creative process :)

Pamenar has always been built through friendships, readings, translations, gatherings, and conversations between people across languages and cities. Over the years so many strong contemporary voices have passed through these rooms, pages, and events, and we’re trying to keep that space alive.

Please consider supporting Pamenar. Any donation helps us continue publishing books, organizing readings and events, running the magazine, and bringing people together around poetry and art.

You can also support by sharing this post, buying books from our website, teaching the books, or simply helping these conversations travel further.

Thank you for being part of it. --> Link in bio.

Winter 2023 seems like just yesterday when I spent 6 weeks in magical Venice, Italy as an Artist in Residence at The Scuola di Internazionale di Grafica learning printmaking techniques from my amazing teacher Alessia De Bortoli. I had plenty of time for painting too after soaking up the splendor of this floating museum. I got to know incredible artists like Christin Lutze from Berlin & Laura Dolp from NYC & Ester Fernandez from Barcelona. Also made friends with fellow Pittsburghers Irna & Mark Knapp who I met at St George’s church service. Missing everyone! Here are some of my Venetian inspired creations while there. Thank you to those who purchased my art while there & commissioned pieces like sweet Becky Craine Kite from CA & wonderful Karen Kinzle Zegel from PA. Many paintings and prints are still available. I hope to have a show of the work someday. Thank you Venice! Copyright protected Susan R Schlepp 2023. #italy #printmaker #watercolorist #artful #venezia

In the Tuesday AM NXT LVL Lab, artists push the boundaries of form and material: Christine Aaron’s @christineaaronart delicate burns and sutures, Colleen Coleman’s @colleencoleman3287 layered digital dreamscapes, Martha Chason-Sokol’s @chasonsokol sculptural poetics of the everyday, Laura Dolp’s @laura.dolp archeological narratives, Natalya Khorover’s @artbynatalya zero-waste textile alchemy, and Theda Sandiford’s @misstheda woven stories of resilience.

At The Crit Lab, critique becomes collaboration, and practice evolves in community.

What if a portrait could remind someone they matter? 💗

On my last day in Sardinia, I opened the doors to my work in progress. Locals and visiting artists came through—curious, generous, radiant. That afternoon, I turned my lens toward them.

These portraits were made in a single day, but they carry the spirit of the entire month I spent in residency: observing, listening, reconnecting.

While my time there was focused on another long-term project highlighting those often left out of the frame, this spontaneous session reminded me—sometimes the most powerful stories unfold when we simply show up and share.

Thrilled to feature Critter Laura Dolp @laura.dolp ✨, an artist and writer whose work transforms archaeological memory into poetic form.

Through a research-driven practice blending printmaking, literary texts, and site-based experience, Laura creates layered collages that meditate on time, ritual, and return. Her work draws from prehistoric sites across the Mediterranean and Baltic—places like Sardinia, Cyprus, Malta, where traces of ancient life still shape the present.

Each series begins with traced aerial maps, evolving into visual palimpsests, fusions of material history, myth, and the imagined.

Her deep listening practice and in-situ research root each piece in physical presence, while literary texts echo the site’s language, impermanence, and ideas of home.

Laura’s work is a modern pilgrimage, a repeated encounter with image and place, a ritual of seeing and re-seeing.

We’re honored to witness the layers unfold.
