Safeguarding LA's inland & coastal waters 🌊

Data centers are quietly becoming one of the fastest-growing drains on our water supply.

A single mid-sized facility can use as much water as a small town. Some use up to 5 million gallons a day.

Globally, they could consume 1.7 trillion gallons of water by 2027. 💧

That kind of demand puts real pressure on local water supplies, especially in places already facing water stress. It means less water available for residents, farmers, and the ecosystems that depend on it.

Here in Los Angeles County, there are approximately 71 data centers, with new projects recently proposed in Vernon, Monterey Park, and Pasadena, just to name a few. As these facilities grow, it’s critical that our region’s water use decisions properly prioritize community health, equity, and long-term sustainability.

For more than 30 years, LA Waterkeeper has tackled LA’s toughest water problems at their source — fighting for a water future that puts people and planet first, holds polluters accountable, and fixes broken systems so every Angeleno has access to clean, reliable water. Help us continue this critical work. ✊

Donate before December 31 and join the fight for clean, safe water in LA.

Every child deserves a school that’s safe, healthy, and allows them to thrive.💧

Yet 38% of LA students attend schools that don’t meet basic health standards and generate more than 3 billion gallons of polluted runoff every year, sending contaminants straight into our rivers and ocean.

Green schoolyards can help.🏫🌳

They cool campuses, clean stormwater, and can help keep 1,200 tons of pollution out of our rivers.

We’re pushing for schools that protect kids and our water. And we need you with us.

Help us reach our year-end goal so we can grow this work in 2026.

Every day in LA, 100+ million gallons of contaminated runoff carries motor oil, fertilizers, heavy metals, bacteria, and trash straight into our rivers and ocean.

We can't just let that slide.

With your support, LA Waterkeeper has helped bring over 100+ industrial facilities into compliance with clean water laws. 💪

This is what accountability looks like. But we need your help to continue doing this work.

Help us reach our next fundraising milestone of $70k by the end of the week. Donate before Dec. 21!

Join us at Patagonia Santa Monica on October 28 for Smart Water: The Hidden Cost of AI, a conversation exploring the intersection of AI, data centers, water, and environmental justice 💧

As demand for data centers grows, so do questions about their impacts: How are decisions about their development made? Who gets a say? How are impacts on local water supplies and the environment evaluated, and who ultimately bears the costs?

Through an expert panel and open discussion, we'll unpack these questions, explore the role of community voices in decision-making, and consider what responsible growth could look like.

Come learn, ask questions, share perspectives, and connect with others interested in the future of our water resources.

Drinks and refreshments will be provided!

LOS ANGELES: VOTE YES FOR PARKS FUNDING 🌳🗳️

The LA City Charter Amendment Measure PRK is not a new tax. What it is: a transformational funding formula correction that would double the city’s budget for the Department of Rec and Parks. This is CRUCIAL to revitalize our collapsing park system.

We need as many voices and votes behind Measure PRK as possible. Tell a friend to tell a friend and let’s get this across the finish line on November 3rd. Angelenos deserve thriving, well-maintained, accessible, and joyful public spaces 🛝🌳💧

Another water year in the books. Let's look at the stats.💧

While we can't control our changing climate, we can build a water system that’s ready for increasingly unpredictable conditions.

The Water Renaissance Plan offers a roadmap for doing just that: investing in local water supplies, capturing and storing stormwater, recycling water, and making every drop count.

Hydrogen sounds clean. But the reality is more complicated. ⚡️

According to a new analysis from Clean Energy Group, more than 90% of hydrogen projects in the U.S. are tied to fossil fuels. And it's also driving hydrogen investment. In the first three months of 2026 alone the industry attracted about $400 million.

So when we hear that hydrogen could help power our clean energy future, we have to ask: What kind of hydrogen are we talking about? And what are we investing in to produce it?

Right here in LA, there are plans to replace aging units at the Scattergood Generating Station with turbines that can run on natural gas and hydrogen. The city says the project will help meet its clean energy goals. But the project’s environmental review raises serious questions about its impacts.

LA Waterkeeper and our coalition partners are calling for a more thorough look at its long-term environmental impacts. Because if we're serious about a clean energy transition, we need investments that actually move us away from fossil fuels.

Believe it or not, beneath all the concrete, Los Angeles is alive with water!

But for too long, we have treated it as something to bury, pollute, and take for granted — paving over not just our waterways, but our imagination of what a truly resilient region could look like.

With LA28 on the horizon and more than $20 billion in regional water infrastructure investment anticipated over the next two decades, the decisions made now will determine whether LA repeats the mistakes of the past or designs systems truly built to last.

Making Waves 2026 will bring together the advocates, public agencies, funders, investors, and builders working to deliver the water future Southern California deserves.

Join us as we celebrate the progress LA has made toward more resilient water systems and ask what it will take to accelerate that progress: how do we finance the transformation this region needs at the scale and speed it demands?

For more than 30 years, LA Waterkeeper has helped drive the LA’s most significant water investments. We don’t just celebrate progress. We help make it happen.

Cadiz Inc. has spent decades trying to pump and sell groundwater from the Mojave Desert.

The project threatens desert springs, wildlife, and water sacred to the Chemehuevi Indian Tribe.

At LA Waterkeeper, we believe LA’s water future should be built sustainably—with long-term solutions like conservation, stormwater capture, and water recycling - not harmful extraction from fragile desert ecosystems.

Stand with the Chemehuevi and sign their petition to stop Cadiz’s groundwater pumping project: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeMF2rUyUri0Kig819Iy1k9QbDKhPablMnKgg6S0Dkz-QHNyQ/viewform by @lawaterkeeper

Water and energy are often managed as separate systems. In reality, they’re deeply interconnected.

As a changing climate puts pressure on both systems, that connection becomes harder to ignore. For Los Angeles, this raises an important question: How do we build greater resilience across both systems?

One answer: local water.
