Happy New Year! To kick-off 2023, I’m excited to share this interview with Psychology Today. Thank you #abigailfagan @psych_today for the invitation, conversation, and thoughtful questions about synaesthesia, inner journeys and my art practice. It’s humbling seeing my art practice origin story in print.

To celebrate our 30th anniversary, we want to introduce you to 30 artists participating in Gowanus Open Studios! Lauren Alyssa Bierly has been part of GOS for 10 years, and you can check out her work at Brooklyn Neighborhood Arts (540 President St) this October 17th-18th!

“I’m a mixed media, interdisciplinary artist and researcher curious about the architecture of consciousness and its relationship to time. Looking both inward and outward simultaneously, I study emotional time through color, light, and language.

My art practice began by observing my personal experience with synaesthesia, a neurological trait where the senses cross talk. I often wonder whether humans are evolving in-to or out-of sensory connections like synaesthesia. Sensory perception is the foundation of my research.

I’ve been working on two series ‘Color Translations’ and ‘Architecture of Memory’ (or ‘Archimem’ for short) capturing interactions between my emotional and physical environments in sensory time, finding ways to re-establish sensory connectiveness between mind and body. ‘Color Translations’ explores my inner world documenting personal experience with perceptual phenomena like synaesthesia. ‘Archimem’ explores my outer environments highlighting sensory perceptions within the context of nature. I was drawn to acrylic paint, plexi, and acetate when first developing these projects to emphasize layers and gradation.

I’m currently merging these two series through hand crafted objects and structural materialities (like glass and weaving) to embed the body in the process as much as the mind in the concept. A balance of time.

In the past, I contained art-making to a notebook or my studio, but as my practice evolves and life happens (caregiving, medical needs, full-time jobs), art-making spreads into all corners of my home, studio, ongoing studies, workplace, and phone’s notes app. I’ve learned that readiness and inspiration thrive when I treat the structures of space and time as equals.”

Check out more of Lauren’s work in our online directory at the link in our bio! Can’t wait to see you all at GOS 💕

The @ecoartspace Soil Shroud project and exhibition unfold @swale_house (Nolan Park#6B) Hall, Governors Island. The central piece (You and I) by @deanna.pindell.artist. Textile image used for this reel’s cover by @kathrynmaguireartist .

Participants around the world have buried, then unearthed, a piece of cloth in diverse environments: forests, gardens, fields. Or, in my case, next to NYC’s largest Superfund site. My piece “A Body Trying to Heal” was created on one such piece of muslin buried next to Newtown Creek for about 3 months (last image).

Want to participate? Stop by on a weekend to see the exhibition and pick up cloth and instructions. You can bury it on the island or in another location. You can embellish the cloth or leave it as is.

If you want to participate from afar, email info@ecoartspace.org to find out about virtual info sessions.

On Saturday June 20 from 2-4 pm, learn more about burying cloth with artists Lauren Bierly @lbierly & Melinda Santiago @melindamkiefer

Stay tuned to @ecoartspace for upcoming events. Full program: https://ecoartspace.org/Swale-House-Governors-Island-2026.

Join us this summer at Swale House!

SOIL SHROUD ROOM at Swale House, Governors Island, NYC

Launching May 16 at 1pm EDT

Nolan Park, Building 6b

Through October 25, 2026

The Soil Shroud Room, presented by ecoartspace, brings together textiles previously submerged in soils from around the world as an artistic expression of the minerals and microorganisms that connect us with ancestral lands. Since 2023, over thirty artists have participated in the online Soil Dialogues, where the concept of burying and transforming textiles was simultaneously initiated in England, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Oman, Canada, Australia and the US.

This summer, visitors to Swale House are invited to contribute to this international collaborative work, to bury, clean, paint, print, embroider, and stitch together soil textiles into an ever-growing collective shroud.

On view within the space in various stages of progress, textiles will hang from clotheslines. These soil expressions will be sewn together during monthly programs. If you would like to participate, we invite you to bury a textile in the nearby garden on Governors Island or in your backyard.

We will be holding monthly Zoom events where you can receive instructions if you would like to participate from afar (email info@ecoartspace.org).

Saturday, May 16, 1-2pm

Patricia Watts will give a public introduction to the Soil Shroud Room outlining the events and outcomes leading up to this installation, and review historical soil artists as she has written about in the recent ecoartspace publication Soils Turn

Saturday, June 20, 2-4pm

Lauren Alyssa Bierly and Melinda K. Santiago, learn the textile burial process and how to clean exhumed textiles

Saturday, July 11, 2-3pm

From Assembling to Witnessing talk with Dr. Alexandra R. Toland, exploring different practices of making work with and about soils as featured in the book Soils Turn, with Pamela Casper who will describe her soil textile process

Thank you to everyone who came through open studios yesterday. I’m so hopeful for our city and world, and fulfilled by the thoughtful discussions and ideas people brought with them. What an awesome day.

So I thought I’d share more about this project “mantra.”

“mantra” grew out of a brief interaction I had with a coworker. It was a busy season, and when we asked each other “how are you?” we both responded “fine” and then rode the elevator together in silence. Clearly exhausted, I wondered why we couldn’t share an emotion other than “fine.” I began documenting my emotions daily and learned that my emotional vocabulary was limited. I reused the same words for multiple emotions and held onto those words for days. There was no nuance to my emotional vocabulary, especially in busy times. I started writing these emotions-words in spirals, repeating the sequence of emotions over and over. Then overlaying my synaesthetic color associations onto the letters of these emotions to obscure some, reveal others. I also used color to create a ripple in different points of the spirals.

Now, continuing to expand my emotional vocabulary, I think about what emotions and words I want to hold onto at the end of each day. What nuances of all emotions should I let fade away or bubble to the surface and imprint my memory?

TONIGHT! 6-9:30pm
Arts Gowanus Patterns Gala 2025
At Gowanus Wharf

“Language 09” from my mind.s.pace series is in the Patterns Gala 2025. This piece displays the word “language” in color according to my synaesthetic associations with letters and color. The word is repeated across a gradient of white, gray and black aluminum prints to show how a shift in tone (or colored backdrop) can change the perceived colors of a concept like the word language.

mind.s.pace series grew out of a conversation I had with a residency cohort in 2020. I asked the group to focus on their mindspace and determine its color. “Close your eyes, what color do you perceive?” The resulting answers were wild—white, black, blue-green, purple, multi-colored, red, and the list goes on. I experience a cool toned black mindspace, which is why the series often appears with black backdrops.

The Patterns Gala 2025 is Arts Gowanus’ biggest fundraising event of the year (also one of their most fun events!). The funds raised help Arts Gowanus continue their year-round programming and community advocacy and continue to fight for a sustainable future for artists in the Gowanus community. If you’re interested in attending or bidding the auction, see the link in my bio. taken in Gowanus Wharf by @lbierly

Opening Thursday, May 15 at 6-8pm
At Field Projects Gallery

My artwork “After Ralph Waldo Emerson’s “Ability” (1929)” will be included in the group exhibition Alt TXT curated by Angelica Aranda and Tereza Chanaki at Field Projects Gallery in Chelsea, NYC. “Ability” is part of my original Color Translations project that laid the groundwork for my art practice. It is a visual representation of my personal experience with grapheme-color synaesthesia reading Emerson’s essay “Ability” in a three-dimensional field of colored dots. Thank you Angelica, Tereza, and Field Projects for this opportunity, I’m truly honored to be included in this exhibition of an incredibly thoughtful group of artists.

About the Exhibition: Curators Aranda and Chanaki have pulled together a variety of mediums that represent the varying interpretations of alternative text. Alt TXT includes work that directly engages with standard idea of alternative text, as with Andy slater’s “Invisible Ink,” and work that takes the idea of alt text at face value, defecting from the westernized version of text as with Luz Ticona’s “Cruz Con Quipu.” Included in the show are a variety of pieces that challenge the relationship between speech and text, standardized text and what we remember, and the physical act of interacting with text.
