POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

To celebrate our 30th anniversary, we want to introduce you to 30 artists participating in Gowanus Open Studios! Lauren Alyssa Bierly has been part of GOS for 10 years, and you can check out her work at Brooklyn Neighborhood Arts (540 President St) this October 17th-18th!

“I’m a mixed media, interdisciplinary artist and researcher curious about the architecture of consciousness and its relationship to time. Looking both inward and outward simultaneously, I study emotional time through color, light, and language.

My art practice began by observing my personal experience with synaesthesia, a neurological trait where the senses cross talk. I often wonder whether humans are evolving in-to or out-of sensory connections like synaesthesia. Sensory perception is the foundation of my research.

I’ve been working on two series ‘Color Translations’ and ‘Architecture of Memory’ (or ‘Archimem’ for short) capturing interactions between my emotional and physical environments in sensory time, finding ways to re-establish sensory connectiveness between mind and body. ‘Color Translations’ explores my inner world documenting personal experience with perceptual phenomena like synaesthesia. ‘Archimem’ explores my outer environments highlighting sensory perceptions within the context of nature. I was drawn to acrylic paint, plexi, and acetate when first developing these projects to emphasize layers and gradation.

I’m currently merging these two series through hand crafted objects and structural materialities (like glass and weaving) to embed the body in the process as much as the mind in the concept. A balance of time.

In the past, I contained art-making to a notebook or my studio, but as my practice evolves and life happens (caregiving, medical needs, full-time jobs), art-making spreads into all corners of my home, studio, ongoing studies, workplace, and phone’s notes app. I’ve learned that readiness and inspiration thrive when I treat the structures of space and time as equals.”

The @ecoartspace Soil Shroud project and exhibition unfold @swale_house (Nolan Park#6B) Hall, Governors Island. The central piece (You and I) by @deanna.pindell.artist. Textile image used for this reel’s cover by @kathrynmaguireartist .

Participants around the world have buried, then unearthed, a piece of cloth in diverse environments: forests, gardens, fields. Or, in my case, next to NYC’s largest Superfund site. My piece “A Body Trying to Heal” was created on one such piece of muslin buried next to Newtown Creek for about 3 months (last image).

Want to participate? Stop by on a weekend to see the exhibition and pick up cloth and instructions. You can bury it on the island or in another location. You can embellish the cloth or leave it as is.

If you want to participate from afar, email info@ecoartspace.org to find out about virtual info sessions.

On Saturday June 20 from 2-4 pm, learn more about burying cloth with artists Lauren Bierly @lbierly & Melinda Santiago @melindamkiefer

Stay tuned to @ecoartspace for upcoming events. Full program: https://ecoartspace.org/Swale-House-Governors-Island-2026.

From May 27 to 29, magic took place in the city of Amsterdam, bringing together the syn community at the symposium “Synesthesia: Interdisciplinary Research in a Multisensory World,” organized by the IASAS (@the_iasas).

At this event, I had the pleasure and tremendous honor of presenting part of my research in the paper “The music of drawing. The perception of sound through graphics from the perspective of synesthete and non-synesthete artists.” In addition, I was able to present and exhibit my work “My chromatic musical scale to be played” alongside works by great artists and researchers whom I admire and hold dear to my heart.

I am incredibly grateful to the organization for including my contribution.

It's been almost a week, and I'm still reeling from the emotional experience of spending time with this wonderful family 🌈.
I'm already looking forward to the next meeting 🥰!!

Join us this summer at Swale House!

SOIL SHROUD ROOM at Swale House, Governors Island, NYC

Launching May 16 at 1pm EDT

Nolan Park, Building 6b

Through October 25, 2026

The Soil Shroud Room, presented by ecoartspace, brings together textiles previously submerged in soils from around the world as an artistic expression of the minerals and microorganisms that connect us with ancestral lands. Since 2023, over thirty artists have participated in the online Soil Dialogues, where the concept of burying and transforming textiles was simultaneously initiated in England, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Oman, Canada, Australia and the US.

This summer, visitors to Swale House are invited to contribute to this international collaborative work, to bury, clean, paint, print, embroider, and stitch together soil textiles into an ever-growing collective shroud.

On view within the space in various stages of progress, textiles will hang from clotheslines. These soil expressions will be sewn together during monthly programs. If you would like to participate, we invite you to bury a textile in the nearby garden on Governors Island or in your backyard.

We will be holding monthly Zoom events where you can receive instructions if you would like to participate from afar (email info@ecoartspace.org).

Saturday, May 16, 1-2pm

Patricia Watts will give a public introduction to the Soil Shroud Room outlining the events and outcomes leading up to this installation, and review historical soil artists as she has written about in the recent ecoartspace publication Soils Turn

Saturday, June 20, 2-4pm

Lauren Alyssa Bierly and Melinda K. Santiago, learn the textile burial process and how to clean exhumed textiles

Saturday, July 11, 2-3pm

From Assembling to Witnessing talk with Dr. Alexandra R. Toland, exploring different practices of making work with and about soils as featured in the book Soils Turn, with Pamela Casper who will describe her soil textile process

Colorful Birdsongs under the Ice and Snow: Yesterday (Sunday), I went to Summer Place after the snow, walking around the lake (middle circle with 8 KM).

There are no Swifts as they are still in Africa. See the wharf on Nanhu Island near the long bridge, many Swifts were flying around to greet my painting "Quantum navigation of Apus apus pekinensis" last year in July!

Thank you so much to everyone who came to see “Homeplace” over the last two months. I was so happy to share this exhibition with you and I’m grateful for the love and support.

“This task of making homeplace was not simply a matter of black women providing service; it was about the construction of a safe place where black people could affirm one another and by so doing heal many of the wounds inflicted by racist domination. We could not learn to love or respect ourselves in the culture of white supremacy, on the
outside; it was there on the inside, in that “homeplace,” most often created and kept by black women, that we had the opportunity to grow
and develop, to nurture our spirits. This task of making a homeplace, of making home a community of resistance, has been shared by black women globally, especially black women in white supremacist societies.”
- ‘Homeplace’ by bell hooks

I hope that for a brief moment, in an increasingly exhausting, oppressive, and depressing world, this exhibition could be your “Homeplace,” and could “nurture our spirits.” Thank you for joining me.

If you missed it and want to learn more, there are images and the reading list on my website including the PDF of the essay “Homeplace” :)

…and big thanks to @primary_build for making the beautiful walls and helping to realize my vision 🙏🏾

Swift Art Exhibition review 23, Duan Zhiqin, a Chinese artist at Museum Palace Abacial, Alcala La Real, Spain.
In this video, he said,"the impression that swifts give me is shuttle running like swift, bravely moving forward, and I used the traditional Chinese folk art – the shuttle shape of the wooden ladle ( used for horses) to express the idea, implying that the world is unified, harmonious, and beautiful. Congratulations on the successful Swift Art International Exhibition in Yuncheng, Shanxi Province, China, and on the success of the Swift Art International Exhibition in Spain. Synesthesia has me, I love synesthesia!
