I always loved fashion, even before I had access to it. Its ability to change how you feel about yourself and how you are perceived in the world is incredible.

I started LYD over a decade ago. And I didn’t know it at the time, but this journey would be about transformation.

Fashion changed my life. It allowed me to express myself before I had learned how to. It helped me “catch up” to my peers. It made me feel powerful when I was scared.

It spoke for me.

I was once a wild little island girl with uncut hair and dirty fingernails, making hats out of ferns, shoes out of recycled bottles, and jewellery out of shells.

What I didn’t realize was that I was developing a skill set:

To think outside the box, to work with my hands, to freely create without judgement. To play. To express. To design. To use fashion as an escape.

I still don’t fit into this industry. But my business, like life, like design, is an evolution. I create jewellery that allows the wearer to express themselves. Adjustable lengths, convertible designs, these are intentional details.

It’s thoughtfully designed to join you on your journey. To evolve with you, or transform, amplify or alter how you feel.

We are more than we realize.

That’s the power of fashion. That’s the power of being true to who you are, wildness and all🩷

For the first 6 years of LYD I dodged questions about where I had gone to school for business, what travel experiences inspired my designs, and who had encouraged me to build my brand.

Here’s why: the fashion industry is one that values glamour and prestige.

And now here’s the catch: I spent 4 years of my childhood living on an isolated lighthouse island. I was the weird kid who didn’t know how to cross a street or who the Spice Girls were. I’m also a high school dropout with a GED. I’ve never travelled. I worked entry-level jobs for over a decade while building my brand after hours and on weekends.

And I did this while people in my inner circle told me I would fail.

Not exactly what you’d expect in a designer bio… right?😉

Fast forward many years and now I proudly share my story. It’s what gives my brand a unique point of view. I design highly versatile jewellery that celebrates what makes you, uniquely you.

Seeing a half-page article in the Vancouver Sun @thevancouversun celebrating my “unglamorous” story means so much to so many past versions of myself.

Here’s what I’ve learned from trying to “fit into” an industry:
1. Never underestimate what your unique lived experience brings.
2. The people who will cheer you on are the ones to connect with your story.
3. There is absolutely no one like you, and trust me, that’s your superpower.

A gigantic thank-you to @aleesha_h for highlighting my journey, you’ll never know how much this means to that weird little island kid🫶 taken in Leah Yard Designs by @leahyarddesigns

Last week I hosted our first-ever LIVE recording of the Voted Least Likely Podcast.

On the morning of the event I was trying to think of an excuse I could make up to cancel it. Some of you may not know this, but speaking in front of an audience (of any size) TERRIFIES me. I used to have such bad anxiety that my face would twitch so much that I couldn’t see straight.

I sweat through two shirts during the day and ended up wearing a blank one that Kyle brought for me (the perks of dating a screen printer) @unimpressedscreenprinting

I was shaking before it started, during, and after.

But I did it.

I chose to do something that scared me, and I chose to have witnesses😉

This is the point. We can change. We can grow. But sometimes we have to put ourselves in situations that force it to happen.

And guess what?

I’m planning on doing it all over again next year🫠

A huge thank-you to the team that made it as easy as it could possibly be: Ryan, Violet @violet.dolejsi, Jenn @jenn_wint, Kyle @unimpressedscreenprinting, Sarah @sarahdarceystyle, and Eliza @elizatrendiak

And to everyone who came out and supported, thank-you so much💗 taken in Leah Yard Designs by @leahyarddesigns

I can’t tell you what an honour it is to see this full-page feature in the @georgiastraight by @vickiduong 💗

I officially launched LYD in 2013, and I assumed I would fail. I was even told I would fail. And to be honest? I kind of did for a while.

I made every mistake you can make. It took years to find my footing in the jewellery world. As a high school drop out, I had no plan B. I just needed to see this thing through.

Fast-forward 13 years and here we are. Still going, still evolving, still making mistakes on the way…

I’m so grateful for the support and encouragement (This feature is especially meaningful because we were also voted 3rd Best Jewellery Brand in Vancouver!)

No one gets to where they are on their own. Thank-you to everyone who has helped us reach this milestone. It would not be possible without you🫶

-Leah, xo

An extra special thank-you to @vickiduong for always cheering on local brands. You are a true gem! by @leahyarddesigns

There are some great brands launching PVD jewellery, and it serves a specific audience. It’s not the direction we’re going to take at LYD, but we’re happy to see new offerings pop up in the marketplace.
