McQueen returns to London Fashion Week with the Spring Summer 2027 runway today Sunday 20th September. This marks Sean McGirr’s first show in London as Creative Director

This invite from 30 years ago is something I came across recently triggering a blast of nostalgia.
I was taken to the ‘97 McQueen show by my gorgeous pal who worked at the renowned Select agency in Covent Garden at the time. London fashion week in the 90s ..!
The designers, the models, the vibes…it was peak glamour - peak everything late 90’s London!

If you haven’t seen this show you should Youtube it.. there were so many people clamouring to get in that the edge of the catwalk became up close and personal seating. The venue, borough market, dead of winter; the set included burning cars ( allegedly an accidental fire)- this was ignored ‘cause it fashion innit. Primal, dark, devilish ..McQueen.

A lovely someone made me aware of the opening night of an incredible exhibit that I was aware of but had never seen in full.

Plans were changed- myself and my boyfriend found ourselves at the Tramway Friday evening just gone, amongst the opening night talks and then….
The quilt! - These large and final panels, beautiful tributes of love and heartbreak, created by friends and lovers, by both given and chosen families, for victims (most of them so so young ) who died of AIDS. So many during its most unforgettable and unforgiving period… the 80’s and 90’s. Such a long time to rampage through a society taking lives at terrifying pace.

I knew some of those people, maybe not specifically represented in the quilt itself, but nonetheless never forgotten.
I lived, loved and worked in the gay community in London through the entire 90’s so this quilt means more to me than simply an art installation or exhibit- the emotion palpably shared by all in the room, the expressions on peoples faces told you everything you needed to know about its importance.

This quilt was designed to convey the humanity behind AIDS at a time of negative press and misinformation and it still does that, and powerfully, to this day.

A generation of adults that lived through and witnessed this time developed incredible resilience, acceptance and determination to not let this event fade into insignificance. It was formative-we lost incredible talent but we also gained incredible strength. Take note, take time to reflect and never ever forget what happened.

A friend found these original pics for sale in a second hand store in Glasgow and knew the significance of this film for me!

I did my post grad at Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London, the same institution that churned out the likes of Laurence Olivier, Dame Judy, Andrew Garfield and a list of other A listers as long as yer arm.
I never really got the bug for film or telly but just after graduation I did a couple of movies, behind the lens, and Boston Kickout was one of those- this is why these four pics are so special to me; I even remember the day these were taken.

I designed the costumes for this film (1994); the same year I graduated.

The director Paul Hill was a character and certainly had an eye for talent.
I remember going to meet the main cast, who I would be designing costumes for, in a fancy production office. This included the internationally acclaimed Andrew Lincoln, the incredible John Simm, and the formidable Mark Warren. These three have certainly made their mark in both TV and film over the last few decades. All three of them gentlemen- kind, super talented and humble. To think 30 years ago we would sift through clothes together building characters and end up in nightclubs partying.
Blessed to have met and worked with such talent.

Back to 2013 with these old pics- me and Mr F were killing it, in hindsight, but at that time I recall neither of us were ever satisfied… body dysmorphia or just the drive to push forwards- I think we had a healthy enough approach to call it the latter!
Craig had been Mr Scotland in 2010/11 and had competed in national finals for several federations (his discipline far outstretched mine!)

So my advice to clients these days- not being satisfied is ok.. as long as you approach that from a positive mindset and use it to drive forward. The goal might be something as simple as feeling good in your work clothes, or sports wear, on the beach or even a spa day, whatever it is manifest your goals- strive all you want but remember to be happy doing it 🙌

Lasts night Queer Voices Glasgow hosted by the Citizens Theatre was an evening of unadulterated joy.. (and oodles of camp)
I especially enjoyed the newly formed LGBTQ Gaelic choir Còisir Cuèir with their offerings of traditional island songs plus an interactive crowd tutorial where we all got to sing along. Uplifting, affirming and refreshingly joyous. A wonderful end to Pride season. ( which btw should be all seasons ) 🌈

Something lovely about having a bit of time during a week to catch up, here’s some of my favourite moments.
Coffee, catch ups, yoga, and a visit to one of the most amazing people I’ve ever had the pleasure to meet. Wonderful Sheila who invited me round for lunch and a chat. At 93 years young and her last work project completed aged 87 I think it’s fair to call her inspirational. Truly humbling to learn of her life 🤍🥹
